I setup dry Robart's higes. Very nice. Now before I glue them in place I had to cover ailerons and at least TE. I wanted to glue them before covering the wing as I will have access to the hinge from the wing's inside.

It took me a while to cover ailerons today. The wing will have exactly the same scheme as the original: blue and yellow with yellow stripes under the wing. Some peak preview from the ailerons covered will give you the idea how it will look like.

Rysium,

Looking good! Yes, it does take a while to cover. I probably spent 40 hours covering my 80" profle Edge.

I'm really expecting to hear good things when you fly this combination.

It's still a lot of work, especially that I want to rearange radio, batery and throttle servo. I'm also adding a simple smoke system. Perry pump and remote valve worked great on tests.

For now I'm still working on the wing mounting.
First I measured the incidence of the wing. What I found, actually my stab was not identical. Right stab had +1 degree up compared to the left. This was the way I was flying .
I fixed that and then I could setup the wing incidence. GP Laser Acu Point incidence meter is great . Very accurate (I repeat measurments many times and always got the same result with the error less than 0.1 degree. Of course I had to use extended bar (36 inch) as the original one was to short for 21 inch chord.

Next I installed hard points for wing screws (lite ply enforced with thin plywood) and sero wire exits (balsa). Next I'm going to drill all holes for wing mounting: antirotation pin, mounting screws and servo wire. When all fits, I will be ready to cover the wing and the fuselage.

Picture below shows build-up fuselage - Building new walls where the old wing was.

This is looking way cool, I'm as excited to see this fly as you are.

Have you made any predictions?

Yes. It will fly better

Seriously:
1. As I fixed elevator halves to be at the same incicence (I didn't have incidence meter before, so the setup was o TLAR) the plane shuld be less snappy.
2. Big fat wing will allow to fly high angle without stalling. I hope for great hariers.
3. Winglading dropped by half (from 32 to 22 oz/sqft). Any maneuvers with flat dropping (wall, parachute) should be flat without snapping.
4. As the wing is wider and longer the plane 'looks short' now. I mean the tail is much closer to the trailing edge of the wing. This may create waterfalls like rolls (in different axis)
5. Huge ailerons at 45 degree - I don't even want to think about the roll rate.

BTW, a couple months ago before I found OMP Kit I designed the parameters of the new wing (see the post 101 in the thread Instruction for Hangar 9 Edge 540 (1.20) ). I mean just general shape of the wing, what I wanted to have on tghis plane. Reading these numbers now I found very close to OMP wing. Actually OMP is a bit bigger and fatter. But the proportons are almost the same. I can not be wrong twice

I'm disgusted with H9 design even more What kind of pseudoprofessional got such crazy idea to cut the fuselage frame in half? What I'm talking about is the rear hardwood stick that wing is screwed into. This is the rear WB on the picture below.

I decided to cut it out as it interfered with antirotation pins. What I found the stick is burried inside fuselage walls. So now the only place that holds the tail with the front of the plane got weakened because 2 of total 4 cross-points were cut through. No wonder, that with anything than perfect landing the plane was breaking in half (it happend to me twice before I laminated the whole connection with CF).

This plane is one of many reasons why I don't buy H9 planes any more.

Now, I stop complaining and get to building . After cutting out the hardwood stick (I saved 1 oz just by that) I enforced these weeken joints with 1/4 thic plywood triangles 2x2 inches. These triangles are also hard points for antirotation pins (see the picture below).

Following previously marked incidence I installed antirotation pins (cut off 3mm CF tube). It came out perfect with accuracy less than 0.1mm. It was the most difficult task (because it is very important to be accurate). I'm gald I did it right. I will save another ounce by cutting off the front stick too.

Now the easy part: after installing blind nuts for nylon mounting screws I cant start final covering. I started to see the light in the end of tunnel

Lazy building day today, but I did finish wing mounting. Four nylon screws 1/4-20 going from the fuselago to the blind nuts in the wing. Very solid mount. I used OMP instruction for making servo wire tubes (finally I know how to do that, because it was always PITA for me (thanks OMP ).

Balsaproducts.com has great deal for Hitec HS-5645MG for 40$ here. It's 15 dollars of Tower price. I ordered some as I need two wor this edge and two for flaps for my Wilga.

Now I think I don't have eny excuse and I will start doing covering job. Hold on, I will show the wing when I'm done with that. It might take a while

All hinges are glued in place now so the wing is ready for covering. I finished top part of one wing and yellow parts of the bottom. I couldn't refuse myself to look how it will fit the plane. Oh, boy. It looks awesome. See for yourself. Here is a sneak peek:

This is really turning out to be a fantastic custom build thread. To me this is half the fun of the hobby and that is trying new things and working through the engineering challenges yourself. Great job Rysiu! Now before you fly be sure to double check everything including all controls, linkages, servo directions, etc.! Had a friend recently who has been flying for 20 years total a brand new CG Obsession simply because he got the ailerons backwards. Was in such a hurry he just overlooked it and lost the plane on the first flight.

Great job Rysiu!

Thank you Mike. And many posts back I felt that you were quite doubtful, that this can be done - did I prove you wrong?

I have to admit it is a fun project. But it wouldn't be without such good wing design and OMP part's quality. I worked with other (but smaller) kits before and this is the second one that goes together like LEGO (the other was 15 size Mustang from PICA). It really turned the work to simple fun and I could focus on modifications instead of fitting parts together.

I promise I will. I mark servo wires and extensions with color insulation tape. It is much more visible than just the channel numbers - yellow servo plug connects to yellow extension, and blue to blue. But then during engine warm-up I do surface check anyway. Because I never remember which aileron must go up when I move the stick, I spread my arms and I 'play a plane' wint my hands and my palms as ailerons. It looks really funny for someone who would watch me, but if I simulate the aerodynamics that way I can verify that ailerons are not reversed

It's still a lot of work in front of me before I go out and fly. After I finish covering both wings I still need to cover fuselage and rearange stuff in there. You can see on the picture, that old fueling hole is covered by the wing's LE, so I need to find a new place on the fuse for it. On the left side I need to find a spot for switch, volt meter, and smoke fueler. Inside the fuse I need to rearange throttle pushrod as the throttle servo will be in different spot.

After that I need to setup entire smoke installation. I mean, this can wait and I don't need to have it right away - I will do a test flight without the smoke anyway. I hope to finish everything before the New Year Fun Fly at our club. I will report for sure.

RysiuM

P.S. Mike, did I thank you enough for your support? And great kudos to Dion too.

One wing is finished. I like working with H9 Ultracote. It really sticks well and shrinks tight but without pulling the frame.

Just one information. I weighted the wing and it is exactly 25.5oz without servo, horn and pushrod. So if the response from post 2 (point 3) was about one half, I got pretty close (I have heavier ailerons for sure). I can expect about 3-1/2 lb for both wings with servos mounted and wing tube installed. I can live with that. I got almost 500 square inches more to take this weight

I got almost finished the second wing. For the record you need at least two rolls of coverning. I'm not sure if it is enough. I had some leftovers form previous projects - some blue and some yellow. I used 2 rolls (one blue, one yellow) and I still have some leftovers but not sure if more or less

I am amazed every day, that it looks so cool I'm sure it will fly well, because why not It was a lot of work, but the result is great. Why in the heaven the original designer of H9 Edge couldn't make it in the first place. Brainfart?

Yes you did prove me wrong! LOL

I knew this kind of project would be a lot of work and not too many modelers would want to tackle such a custom task or be successful for that matter. That's why I'm cautious about making recommendations. I think you now qualify for "expert kit basher" status!
