Yarom

My setup is as follows:

5925's on the ailerons 4 in total.
5955's on the rudder single pull pull setup.
5925 on throttle
811 or something mini servo for the choke
5945's on the Elevators
9 Channel reciever with match box to handle the ailerons for the time being maybe taking out shortly and replacing it with mixing and y cable.
Single Duralite Lithium Ion 2900Mah 7.4V step down to 6.0 Volt on reciever on a duralite regulator.
DA50 with ignition running on Hydrimax 4.8V 2000Mah

I get to fly 4 or 5 times if I am lucky at the field when it's not to busy. You really dont need 2 batteries for your setup, I believe a 2900mah is more then enough to fly 4 or 5 times without being worried with the battery condition, will have to do a load test after 3 flights and see what the reading is.

The carbon tubes and Landing gears can be found on http://www.graphtechrc.com, the tube I ordered is the following, 616 1.5 x 36 x .046 Stock 1-1/2" Tube Weighs 6.4oz. 69.95USD, once it gets here I'll cut it according to the length I need.

I dont know for some reason I have a feeling my 540 edge once I weigh it when the scale arrives is going to be very light, am guessing at the moment close to 17lbs.

Looks like a good day to fly today, most likely will be getting some vidoes.

A video sure would be nice. I like the graphics, definitely much better than stock (which is what's on mine).

I know the feeling, my extra looked 17lbs to me as well. When I put it on a digital scale I discovered the ugly truth - she was 18.5lbs.

I'm convinced that with some CF parts and reducing the batteries, I can bring it down to 17lbs with very little effort (CF tube and gear, less batteries, lighter wheels).

Had a midair today. We had the JROTC come with their trainers, and a couple of them were flying like mad . Basically my axle / gear clipped his h stab while doing KE. I lost my gear, and somehow my engine died also. His plane just nose-dived. So I try to deadstick and belly flop that thing. That was fine, but my muffler unfortunately caught the dirt and tore up my firewall.

Damage:
Bent and torn LG
torn cowling (fixable)
torn firewall assembly.

Definitely fixable, but I'm tempted to move on to another frame. I've been eyeing the Airwild Extra 260 or GP Ulti. Both will definitely make the DA come alive.

BTW, it's caught on tape. I'll try to edit it in the next couple of days.

Bonedoc, sorry to hear of the incident, hopefully you nwill have the urge to get her back up and flying. Good thing over here, when we gassers flip our props the nitro's come down. I guess it's just out of respect or something not a rule thing.

If your looking into another DA50 plane, I would serioualy recommend the following. http://www.chiphyde.com double vision.

It's a bipe, a very good bipe in fact, very much liked over here, and see her fly, it really sparked my interest.

Sorry to hear that. Your Edge build-up was an inspiration to a lot of us starting on our Laniers.

While I enjoy flying Lanier, I am totally checking out the new AirWild.

Am complaing about my 2900 duralite weight, lion batterty, thinking of swapping it out with a 2000mah lion duralite to shave of 64 grammess, ehh I think 2 battries is overkill, you really dont need it, put a 4000mah duralite instead of 2 batteries.

If your running 50DA on the lanier, every gram counts, even a 60 zdz, an 85 on the edge 2 batteries weight is not really going to be an issue, check her dry weight to conclude your decision.

I believe that two smaller LiPos batteries (1000 Mha) are still lighter than one large NiMh or Nicad pack (with the regulator). It also offers redundancy one does not get from one pack and one switch.

Tomorrow is the big day if the weather holds. The edge is ready and the 3W 55i has had several tanks of fuel run threw it.

Bonedoc--sorry to hear about the mishap--nice video btw--I hear Airwild has an Extra and an Edge with 87 inch wingspans they claim build out to 14.75 lbs with DA 50--might be a good home for your DA if you decide not to repair-of course at that weight the airframes might be pretty fragile--still working on mine--finishing up the small stuff----let us know what you decide to do

I believe the aiwild one is composite built ? Might want to look at wildhare, though the vid that bill hempel has on his where the wing snaps is some what concerning, interesting part is how he managed to fly the plane with one wing and KE land the plane.

I'll see if I can find that link to that vid.

Airwild is all wood, and yes, that video was pretty impressive. Had I have the throttle still, I would've tried to do a harrier on it, or maybe an inverse harrier landing.

Bill Hemphel admitted soon after that incident that the reason that the wing broke off in flight was that he forgot to tighten up the wing holddown bolt on that wing - not because of any structural problem with the plane.

Okay rapala fish digital scale has finally arrived, my edge 540 weighed in at 17.10 OZ.

The carbon fiber wing tube and landing gears are on their way and most likely going to take out the 2900mah and put in 2000mah, li-ons ofcouse in there that should easily shave of 1 lbs. Also came across and rc plane mg at the LHC which had the yak review, funnily enough her cg was the same, however in the review they had issues with the c.g. they called upon lanier and lanier mentioned abou releasing a new updated manual where the c.g wuld go to 7 3/4 of an inch from the firewall if I remember right.

BTW airwild does composite just not 50cc class 100cc class. I stand to be corrected.

You got a light one. I will have to go with carbon accessories to get from 18.5 lbs down in 17 pound range. I've got about a dozen flights on mine and concluded that I need more right thrust at the engine. When I pulled the cowl and removed the top of the motor box, I noticed that the firewall was delaminating and pulled loose from the port side. If it wasn't pinned, it would have torn loose. It looks like the firewall is made of 3 sheets of light plywood that were tack glued together. If I was Lanier and didn't want to pay for aircraft grade ply, I would have at least laminated light glass cloth between the layers. I understand wanting to save money, but you can't skimp on the firewall. I don't dislike the airplane, but I've seen alot better quality in cheaper ARFs. And they were more truthful about the weight range.

Same here - need about a click of right thrust and a click of down thrust.

My firewall is going nowhere as I elected originally to double it with another nice piece of 1/4 high grade ply and just use standoffs that are 1/4 shorter for the DA. Need that weight in the nose anyhow and it might as well be something structural.

I like the plane. It's easy to fly and looks very good when a good pilot flies it. I don't see the need to invest in light CF parts at this point, even at 18lbs, the DA hauls it absolutely anywhere.

I would rather save the money and buy a second airframe that is designed lighter - like the AirWild.

Here is a copy of the email I sent out and reply from lanier in regards to the c.g. of the plane.

Laniers reply:

"The CG in the booklet is very conservative. 33% would be 6.6" and that would be no problem.

Thanks"
