It is a great engine Capt. I would run it. Of course I apply that same phillosophy to valluable unfired firearms, minty vintage motorcycles, etc.

The 45 BBRC is still made by Fox and fliteline solutions has a copy of the manual.

They still make the ol'reliable 45 and its probably unchanged from the days when I had one once. In the late 80's I got out of the hobby and sold everything and now I'm back in - momentary lapse of sanity I guess. The one I had used to be owned by Moses (yes they had rc back then). It was no telling how old when I got it in a trade and seen untold number of flights (and crashes by the looks of it). It ran great for me for several years up to the day I sold everything. Wish I still had it. Remember to add some castor to the fuel because its older technology and has a ringed piston. Break it in with patience and and you'll be rewarded.

I have a 19bb in the box new, a 50bb in the box new, and a well used 45bb that I fly on a P40, and I had a 40 bushing on a 4 star that ran great.

Both the 40 and the 45 will start on a backflip. Both engines are very reliable and a ton of power.

That little light 40 bushing is perfect for a built up and lightened 4star, wish I would have never sold it but I got 100$ for a well used 4star in need of recovering and the 40 bushing on it and had my eyes on a new plane. I bought the plane and engine for 80$ used.

The 40 had been on the plane since it had been built and I was the 3rd owner.

I can't remember the plane I bought but I sure remember that little 4star and Fox 40 bushing.
The guy I sold it to loves it and recovered it beautifully. Flies it a good bit to. That plane has got to be close to 15 years old.

He won't sell it back either.[:(]

Come to think of it I do have one NIB fox I haven't run. It is an old split case 19. They have such a reputation for fragility that I have not quite made up my mind to run it.

I have a couple of other old engines I have not run simply because I can't get the *#@% things to start.

I flew my NIB Fox 60 from 1975 today in a Kwik Fli.
I have put 3 14oz tanks of fuel through it before flight, I use a APV 12/6, and I use 20% castor and 5% nitro.
The first flight was rich and it had no pull, the exhaust residue was clear and nice.
On tuchdown the engine stopped and I don't think it was to rich on low speed.
The second flight I leaned it out and it was real strong, after a while at wot it hesitated and I had to throttle down to get it going again.
At landing it stopped again.

Now the exhaust residue was more of a black color.

How long is the brake in on this engine, did I hurt it?
Should I use more nitro, more oil?
I read about Duke's missle mist and that it had 20% nitro, we never used nitro here in the old day's.

After landing I started it again and it has a amazing idle and it seams so strong.

I only have one old Eagle...and IIRC it took quite a while to really come in nicely...it currently sits in it's box, waiting for another airplane :)

3x 14oz. tanks would be just the beginning of the break-in process for your old Eagle [:D]
It will take probably at least a gallon before it loosens up some?

20% Castor and 5% Nitro sounds like a good fuel choice...I'd say just give it some more break-in time.

I agree, but to be on the safe side, pop the backplate and take a gander at the rear ball bearing and the connecting rod. Make sure they are okay.

I bench ran my original baffle piston equipped Eagle .60 for two hours very, very rich. I then mounted it on the Kaos which was to be its perpetual home and discovered that the engine still wasn't broken-in, although it would fly without quitting if you ran it rich enough. Fifty some flights later it finally met my criteria of being broken-in.

It was a great engine for many hundreds of flights, until an approaching storm blew sand and cold air into my eyes and caused my eyes to tear so badly that I crashed the model and destroyed everything. Especially the engine. Just for kicks, I popped it into a box and sent it back to Fox. They removed the cylinder head and carb from my old engine and put them on a new engine and charged me a whopping $28 (including shipping) and sent it back to me. Neat!

I have collected some old Fox Eagle .60 baffle piston engines over the last few years and I intend to fly them on the original Kaos design for kicks. I must have close to a dozen of them now. I'm going to go through them and build two or three beautiful engines and then keep the rest for spares.

Would it be stupid to run it rich in my Kwik Fli, or should I put it on a stand and run it on ground.
I can set it up like the first flight when it was real rich with a clean exhaust residue.

I saw something about running a 11/6 propp but that must be wrong for a 60 engine.
My propps that I use on my 60 engines are 12/6 or 11/8, , mainly K&B and Veco engines.

Just run it a little rich, and go with either the 12 x 6 or an 11 x 7 or 11 X 7.5 (or maybe the 11 x 8 after it's run-in some more )

The early Eagle is a decent, torquey engine and not really a revver...and with the 2 rings it just seems to take longer to break-in.

To be honest with you, I suspect that the original Fox Eagle .60 would pull an APC 11x9 without breaking into a sweat. I have yet to try it though. Fuel it up with Missile Mist (originally the recommended fuel by Fox) and I'm sure it would then handle the 11x9. That would give the model a bit of zip at a lower pitch than most folks are used to seeing. I love messing with folks minds that way. <G>

But first after I'll break it in some more.
As Dragracer I have both Nitro and Methanol at home, just ad some nice Castor oil.
Smells just like the old day's[:)]

Cog, that .50 is one of the best kept secrets in this hobby. Hang on to it as if it is gold. It is the lightest of all the .50s, being lighter even than the Webra .50, I know because I have both.

Yes it is a gem, couldn't resist when I happened to find it on auction.

Bought it for a reasonable price and it is complete but missing the spinner backplate.

I haven't figured out what plane to use it on, I might have to get a KAOS or something like that for it. It seems sacrilegious to mount it on the Magic 300 or SeaBee I have sitting new in the box.

I tached it and got 10.800 rpm at vot and 1800 rpm at idle, and it unloaded much in the air.
I used a APC 11x8 and missle mist fuel, I think the vot rpm are to low?
Tomorrow I will take the engine apart for inspection, I think one of the rings are damaged.
Can I get new rings if I need, from whom??

I was only able to get 10,500 out of mine, no matter how small the prop (within reason). But, I had the impression that it would pull much more prop without straining. I don't think APC offered the 11x9 back then and I have always wished that I could have tried one. Now that I have several of these engines once again, you can bet that I will give the 11x9 and 10 a try, just for hoots.

Ed, so my 10.800 is acceptable with a 11x8.
I have a 11x9 and a 10x10 on order.
The sad part is I crashed my Kwik Fly yeasterday, don't fly inverted 40 inches over ground with no fuel in the tank.
I stalled it on when trying to save it.
But it will fly next weekend after repair, broke bothe the wing ans fuse.

If you can't get them (rings ) directly from Fox perhaps try Frank Bowman?

Well the engine is apart, and the rings are good.
But I think the rod needs replacement, I think it's to lose, both the pistonpin and on the crank hole.
I hope fox has them and that it's the same on th newer Eagle.

So the black residue from the exhaust must have been the un bushed tophole on the rod.

Yep, you really do have to run some castor oil in the Fox engines.

Sorry about your plane getting crashed. Are you going to repair it?

Bee careful using Missle Mist as it only has 17% oil in it. It's not the same as it was 20 years ago.

Hey guys, I have a Fox .74 for sale. I advertised it for $89.00 plus shipping NIB. When I went to their website, I noticed that they are still sellin that engine for $241.00. Did I screw up and list the engine for dirt cheap??
