Here is my Fox .50 wearing an Irvine .46 JetStream carb and an MVVS 3245 Quiet Muffler. The adapter you see under carb is made from a broken Fox carb that I cut the part you see off of it using a band saw. Be aware that if you try to put a Perry carb on the .45/.46/.50 the hump on the back of the Perry will have to be sanded down a bunch because the carb sits straight up, it does not lean forward like on the .60/.74.

Hi friend!

I was think in do that, but how do you modified the Fox "square" base in the default round base of most carbs? If i cut it, doesn´t will has seal with round base carbs..

BTW, what is the rpm performance in your Fox .50 with this carb mod? Did you gain or lost rpm in the same prop?

I really liked the Fox carburetor internal design..really high flow..

Hobbsy -> RE: Club FOX! (10/1/2008 4:29 PM)

Mat, the carb bases I used were the newer EZJust, most were used ones that were broken from abuse, the are round inside. The older two needle carbs are square in bottom half. The Perry adapter and a Perry carb are on the right. The center one is a Fox carb base with an MVVS 7mm carb.

jeffie8696 -> RE: Club FOX! (10/1/2008 9:43 PM)

Personally I like the Perry carbs. The quality is very good.

Thank you friend for the info!

Really good number of carb adapters there!

Just to understand..the EZjust is the new version of Fox carburetor? Well, is not easy find the new version to sell spare parts, but i will try..

thank you very much friend!

Here is the pictures of my Fox engines:

My Fox .50 with tuned inlet (i made a special velocity stack polish to increase airflow in high rpm):

This Fox .50 is a very strong engine for common sport use.. really very nice engine... OS 55AX is smoked by this Fox .50...

And here is my small brother of above, tha Fox .40 (this is ABC construction, not ringed like above):

Props X rpm:

Fox .50: close to 14.000rpm using 11x6 prop and 10% nitro fuel
Fox .40: close to 13.300rpm using 10x5 prop and 10% nitro fuel

I know that people here doesn´t like small engines, but here go my little but not weak AP 0.09 engine (16.000rpm with 7x4 prop):

I already bought more one Fox engine, when it arrives i will post picture here.

Thank you friends!

I got my hands on an Eagle III that does not have a head or a button. Anybody got one they want to part with?

Francis

Hobbsy -> RE: Club FOX! (10/12/2008 4:24 PM)

Francis, I've been dealing with a very sick wife for about 5 months, shoot me your addy and I'll head one your way, I know you asked me about it months ago so a huge apology comes with it. Thanks, Dave

fmichaelb -> RE: Club FOX! (10/24/2008 4:14 AM)

Hey, Matheus. There is a carburetor like you need on eBay right now, currently at $17.00 (of course, that could go up before the time runs out, in about 3 days) and he says he will ship internationally. Hope this helps you.

jeffie8696 -> RE: Club FOX! (10/24/2008 6:00 AM)

So Matheus you don't have a .45BB ringed engine yet? [:D][;)]

Hi Michael!

Thank you very much for the advice, friend!

But, i already bought a VERY nice carburetor!!!! see the pictures in the next post friend!

heheehhe not yet.. i tried buy from ebay, but the value went for incredible 70 USD for a damaged engine.. [:@]

MatheusC20XE -> RE: Club FOX! (10/25/2008 4:53 AM)

like i said..

here is my new carb.. from vintage Fox Eagle .60! a really massive carburetor (very big inlet) and different venturi system!!!

see the pictures:

new carb installed and old in side

Monster inlet!!!

Different venturi system, not slide system!

The monster installed (standard inlet) versus standard Fox 50 carb with bellmouth maked by me!

The internal diameter of new carb is much bigger, but the throttle system steal more flow space.. but, i feel a good rpm gain after carb installed!

I will tach this engine in this weekend if everything be good..after that, i will post the result!! by the sound, i think i had a gain near 600rpm with just carb change!!

Im thinking in increase the exhaust port duration to around 170º to use better the new inlet flow!

Thanks friend for all help and comments!

jeffie8696 -> RE: Club FOX! (10/25/2008 5:15 AM)

One like this? [:D]
No you said it was used, not new like the one I have. [;)]

MatheusC20XE -> RE: Club FOX! (10/25/2008 5:22 AM)

hehehe! nice engine friend!

It´s look like a Fox Eagle, the same carb that i bought..

Is it .45 ABC?

very nice engine.. you are a lucky man! [:D]

martenson -> RE: Club FOX! (10/26/2008 11:40 PM)

I don't know if some one remember my problem I had with my first Fox ever.
It is a Fox Eagle 1 60 from early 1970 that I found on ebay new in box.

I put it in a Kwick Fli for some real nostalgia.

After a bit of trouble to get it broken in, after some time it worked decent to put it in the air.
I them after about 1 hour of run time fueled it up with Duke's Missle Mist and went flying.
I made a low inverted VOT passthen the engine stopped abruptly and I could not recover and crashed.

I took the engine apart and found out that the rod was hurt and had to much play in the pisston pin, the rod had no bushing at the piston pin only at the crank.
Fox did not have any spare parts so I put it aside.

Last night I started my lathe and a few hours later I had a nice new bushing in the rod and and I messured all the play in the engine and it was real good.

Today I started it for the first time and it was running real good at idle and middle range, but I could only get 8000 rpm's with FAI 80/20 fuel and 9500 with 15% nitro(I always use 20% castor oil)
I run it 2 tanks at 5000 rpm to loose it up if that was the problem, but no it was not.

So I took it apart again and after looking at all parts under magnafying glass and found a pin hole in the casting on the crankcase just under the mounting beam.
I then pressureaise the crankcase and it blew theoug the hole pretty good.

Can this be the reasson for the bad running, I must loos a lot of crank pressure and that can not be good.

Here is pics of my rod[:D]

Sport_Pilot -> RE: Club FOX! (10/27/2008 6:13 AM)

Check for a hairline crack around that hole with florescent penetrate dye, it was likely caused by the crash. If you have access to a tig welder you should be able to repair the hole and any cracks. Fox engines, especially the older ones take a long time to break in.
The inverted pass probably made it go leaner than it could tolerate without further break in.

Hobbsy -> RE: Club FOX! (10/27/2008 4:51 PM)

Martensen, the leak most like caused lean running and took out the top rod bearing. If it were mine I'd spray a product here called Brakleen that cleans brake parts, then I would fill the crack with Red Loctite and let it sit a couple of days. If the crash caused the leak then the rod failed because of something else.

Sport_Pilot -> RE: Club FOX! (10/27/2008 5:48 PM)

Like maybe hitting the ground which flexed the case allowing the rod to hit the side of the case, or the crank to bend away from its axis, which put too much strain on the wrist pin. But the lean run from the hole is a possiblity, but if it stopped right away I doubt it.

martenson -> RE: Club FOX! (10/27/2008 5:55 PM)

Hobbsy, the pinhole in the crankcase is a manufactoring flaw and not caused by the crash.
It was a casting error, and I think that caused the lean running condition that hurt the rod.
I cant make it peak now, it's ether to lean or fat, with both FAI and 15% fuel.
I use Brakleen on my drag race car, and I will do on the fox to.
And I will drill out the hole and use steel epoxy the seal it, I use Plastic Pading's steel epoxy on my intakes and heads on my race car with good experience.
I will check by later with results and pictures.

Thanks for the reply's[:D]

NM2K -> RE: Club FOX! (10/27/2008 10:29 PM)

I'm sure that your steel epoxy will work fine in that application, Martenson.

It probably would work if its not from the crash.

jeffie8696 -> RE: Club FOX! (10/27/2008 11:23 PM)

Wish I had known you needed a rod. I have no idea what these fit.
Wht kind of race car do you run? I sometimes help a friend with a Top Fual Dragster.

martenson -> RE: Club FOX! (10/27/2008 11:43 PM)

Jeffie, I'm the crewcheif on a nitro altred and my own toy is a 1970 Challenger Super Stock car that I'm building a new 440 sixpack race engine for.
This is my other toy beside model airplane and model engines.

P.S I bored the pinhole in to the crank area and it was a cavity with some sand in, was these engine sand casted??

martenson -> RE: Club FOX! (10/27/2008 11:49 PM)

More picture of the crankcase.

jeffie8696 -> RE: Club FOX! (10/28/2008 12:02 AM)

If you have seen enough cast parts you will eventually see a casting flaw like the one you have. Inclusions are not that unusual.[8D]
My friend has a Nostalga Top Fueler running about 95% nitro. He is still learning the car and has not done too well but he gets better all the time. Here is a photo from Indy last year. Nice track. Love the 70 Challenger and the 440 is one of my favorite engines to work on. I don't know why but I can't get a Chevy to run the way I think it should to save my life. [8|]

martenson -> RE: Club FOX! (10/28/2008 12:25 AM)

Jeffie I know what you mean, I have never owned a Chevy only a Ford Fairline 500 XL 1966, I'm a MoPar guy.
Now I have a 66 Dart, restoring a 68 Charger, my Chally and my wife's 72 Charger 440 4 speed.
I have been a pilot in 2 different FED ond straight six ford rail and one 392 hemi rail.
And my daily driver is a Dodge Nitro, (what I do to help the US economics, just kidding) [;)]

I have not seen this type of casting flaws for a long time, but this engine is real old, even though it was NIB.

Take care.
