terry- mitch (nine-o-nine) sent me the nose art decal which fit perfectly.
the insignia was painted on and the rest of the graphics were done by a local modeler who has a vinyl graphics cutter. the vinyl was originally too glossy for my finish, so i scuffed it up with 1500 grit wet & dry paper and shot it with some krylon satin clear. after this it was a perfect match to my paint finish.

before mitch sent me the nose art i was working with a pic i got off the internet. you might want to try something like this. cleaned up the pic removing rivets and shadows with a computer art program. i have had some good luck with inkjet decalwater transfer paper in the past and was going to use this originally.

thats a cool little bit of history of these two planes.

I have a good copy of the nose art. It was on the cover of a book I found, that is a compilation of Outhouse's last crew's personal diaries. That is also where I found the info about the crewchief. His name is M/Sgt Rollin Davis. The book was done by the pilot's son.

terry- looks like you have an excellent example for your none art.
these pics show how i made the nose art of the girl for my california cutie z p-38. i scanned a pic in a book that was 1 1/2" tall, blew it up to 6" tall, cleaned up pixels and colors then printed the finished image on a water slide decal paper and sealed the image with clear paint. the finished product turned out pretty good for the amount of money i had in it.

That came out pretty good. I will have to try that for mine.
I am considering painting all the markings as you did on yours. Do you have a good technique for masking over the panel lines, rivets, etc, without the paint bleeding under the mask?

the only markings that i painted on was the insignia ( star & bar) and the white triangles. every thing else is with vinyl graphics.
the insignia was painted using a masking material called friskett (10"wide roll of clear low tack masking film). the matt finish version can be marked with a pen, layed out on the model then sections cut out as needed to paint.

dave, i think this is what you are asking for.
these pics were taken back in october when i was getting the plane back out after some rebuild work. in august i was at a meet that had a rough field and the nose gear collapsed and was mangled up when it failed in a rough spot towards the end of a take off run. the nose gear door was ripped off causing some damage to the bottom of the center pod. the bolly props chopped at the ground at full throttle and it was a miracle that they came out of this unscathed.

Mike,
Superb looking B-17! But I need to hi-jack your thread for a moment if ya don't mind...

On the previous page Gremlin Castle posted a link to some images of a (saddening) crash, but also shown was this model...

...which I believe is a Nakajima Ki-43. Does anyone know who owns this plane or any other info? I've recently started designing a 1/6th scale (71" span) Ki-43 from scratch and I didn't think that anyone else had ever modelled it (although I also recently found out that Royal used to do a kit. So much for being the first, huh? ).

Many thanks!
Blue
