after getting away from this project most of the summer i had the b-17 out in the yard today doing some final sanding in preperation for painting. it's quite a sight all assembled together, i thought i'd click off a few pics and start a thread and post some pics in the future of the painting and detailing over the upcoming winter.

the plane has a 156" wingspan and a 110" fuse length. it's powered by 4 saito 150's.

Very nice. Watching your progress will help me get through those cold winter nights.

Are those static or real props? If real then where did you get them? Manufacturer? Distributor? URL? Etc. Thanks.

After putting my Lancaster togehter, I commend anyone who builds 4 engine planes. What a ton of work. Nice job and good luck.

got the bomber out of the garage and in the driveway today, i started to peel off the window masks and could not resist taking a few in progress shots. to get caught up with what i have done so far in the painting. i have applied 3 of the 5 main colors so far. i am painting with dupont centari acrylic enamel automotine paint. all the paint is glossy, so i kill the gloss with a equal amount as the paint of dupont flattening coumpound, this turns the paint into a flat finish. the first paint i applied was white for the stars and bars and triangles on the tail and wing. when painting you always want to apply the dark colors on top of the lighter colors. next was the bottom gray then the olive drab on the top.
after i applied the olive drab i took a little of the left over mixed olive drab and mixed about 10% white into it. added another 50% flattener then about over 100% reducer to create a very weak paint mix.this was applied on the top of the wing in various places and on the very top section of the fuse to create a faded paint effect.
the next colors will be red for the tail and dark blue to finish the insignia. i am reproducing the "909" patriot full size show b-17.
here are a few more pics.

thanks for the compliments guys.
da-man- i have a 12' trailer that i will be transporting this model in. i have a passion for large warbirds and the bigest problem i have is that with a 11' long fuse i have a hell of a time moving this thing around without bumping into things. i have never flew in a real warbird, this must have been quite an experience for you.
mirwin- these are the flying props and i am not quite sure what they are. on the hub they are marked (made in germany 15x8) and are made of gray plastic.

i picked up this plane last year from another modeler. i was told the flying weight was #70 and have always been impressed how great it flew.
i put a lot of work into it last winter. i have always liked the G version of the b-17 with the chin turret, so i cut off the nose and changed the shape of the new one, added bomb bay doors, ball turret, retractable tailwheel, changed the shape and location of the waist gunner windows and sanded off the old paint to ready for primer.
i am really looking forward to the finished paint job with weathering and bristling with machine guns all over the place.

selleri - i think you are right about the props being graupner's

here are a few pics from last winter

Nice looking job on the chin turret. Try to avoid the situation in the following pictures. This happened at Bomber Field last month. Dick Lee captured this flight gone awry.

Unfortunately I had my back to the crash when it happened. We did have fairly stout cross winds but there were several people flying including myself with no major problems. The pilot flying the plane is very skilled in flying heavy iron.
Maybe someone else who was there could give you a better idea. There were 8 or 9 more B-17s that flew without any major incidents.
In the dozen years that I have flown the event this is the first one that I remember being lost. Of the four engine bombers they are still the most reliable performers.
