Gentlemen,

I'm looking into buying one of the Hangar 9 Cap 232's for my first "giant scale" 3D plane. I have a pattern, heli, scale and sport flying background.

Is this plane a good choice, what about engines for it. The Zenoah gets rave reviews I hear, but I'm impressed with the engines with electronic ignition as well. Give me some advice will ya? TIA.

Scott

I just bought the cap 1/4 scale for my first large scale plane. I have started to build it and it is a real nice kit. I dont know if you can still get them but they were on sale for 199$. As for the zenoa engine, they are very heavy and not alot of horse power. I am looking at going gas in mine and probably will go with the zdz 40. It is light weight and has almost 5 hp. You might check chiefaircraft.com for the cap at the 199 price.
Good luck
Jeff

Guy's

I got the Cap! Wow what a kit! This thing is really nice, everything fits very nice. I'm shopping engines now, weight, power and price are my considerations and in that order. What are your ideas on a "100" size motor for the Hangar 9 Cap 232.

Either the BME 102's or DA-100's are awesome, can't go wrong with either one of these motors for the money. BME's has less power than the DA, but there lighter so it's a matter of choice. Can't wait to get my Cap, which LHS did you get yours for $721 what a steal?

Eddie,

It was in stock for $700 @ Debbie's R/C World in Va. Beach Virginia. Les is the owner and I guess he got a good deal from Horizon on it. Thanks Les!

Eddie,

Have pretty much settled on a BME 102. The currently available engine @ 4.7 lbs is by about a .lb lighter than any of the other "100" size gassers available that I know of. I spoke with my friend Andrew Benjamin who reps for BME and he told me Keith is working on an even lighter and more powerful 102. It's due out in Febuary. 4.2 lbs and 10 hp!!! What's this world coming to? I'm gonna wait on that version of the BME 102.

I haven't seen a need to modify anything in the way the kit is built as far as the instructions go, but I guess you can always find something to Dremel on to reduce the weight.

Beautiful kit, I'm very happy with it. Well worth the money I shelled out for it.

Scott,

OK, had to get one of these Cap's with all the rave reviews everyone is saying that I didn't want to get left out! The new BME is going to be a 105cc, completely redesigned for added horsepower, proformance etc. BME is gunning for DA in terms of HP. Not sure what the final weight will come in at, it's still under development and I heard there ship date is delayed until June timeframe. Should be sweet with both companies going for a shootout on performance and power!

Eddie,

I heard the new BME was going to be a 102 but almost a lb lighter and more powerful. I also heard that it would be out by end of Febuary.......Who are you talking to for info? A dealer?

Scott,

No, I was talking to Terry over at C&H ignitions about BME's new motor. He told me he just talked to Keith Baker the other day about the new 102cc that's coming out. He thought it'll be a 105cc with a new design altogether to get the extra hp and weight reduction, it's still in development and might be delayed until spring etc.

I decided to go with a DA100 myself, I always wanted one of those DA engines.

Yes the BME is light 4.7 lbs, and now they are shooting for a pound lighter? All I can say is WOW and how could they? The BME is no doubt an excellent engine, but let's not forget physics, The lighter an engine will be, means there is less mass and that must equate to more vibration, there's really no getting away with it. I guess we can always soft mount it if this becomes a problem, but I doubt if it will be a problem BME engines are excellent and I haven't seen a bad one yet. As far as DA engines? I don't know what these guys are doing but it's amazing how much power these engines are producing especially the 150. That's my 2 cents for now, and no matter which way you go, BME or DA I'm sure you'll be happy, keep up the good work guy's

There really is no relationship between the mass of an engine and the vibration. If that were so, then a Harley V-twin should be smooth, and it's anything but. Vibration for any boxer twin should be minimal because each piston balances the forces developed by the other piston. Some vibration is created because the rods are offset. Still, I don't see where they can take any more weight out of the BME 102 - I really doubt they will remove a pound - a couple ounces maybe

I talked to Kevin @ BME and he said a couple of ounces lighter at best, but more powerful due to a new reed induction system. He also said I'd have way more than enough power for my Hangar 9 Cap and that I could blow the airframe up if I wasn't careful.
