What in the heck makes the landing gear on these Canadair Regional Jets sound like the wing flew off? I do 100,000 miles a year and it still makes me jump a little. Whats with the gear? Poor design?
2nd, I notice on 737's that the leading edge droops that they go out all cocked and jerky, like they are bound up. Is this normal? Thanks for the curious answers. Keith

I fly on the CRJ's a couple times a year. I notice a "loud noise" kind of a "snap" and then you could feel it retract down, like it was stuck and then forced down, like spring air's......LOL I'd like to know also. Kind of spooky! Maybe this could be asked or moved in the "full scale" section too.

If I could hazard a guess I'd say the noise is the lock breaking loose that locks the gear both in the down and up position.

The funny thing is all the people that do not like flying or aircraft, jump, look around with a look of , " What the H**L was that, the plane is falling apart!!", when the gear comes down!

LMAO! Good stuff!

I've been up in a couple of the Cessna "RG's" ...talk about an experience your first time!

First there's a "pop" when the gear is released for retracting, then gear struts basically swing in the
air until the mechanism actually catches up and very abruptly smacks the gear into the sides
of the fuselage where the wells are ! It seems to almost kick the back of the plane up when the
gear hits. That was pretty intimidating the first time but, the nice thing was at least you had
a visual reference to what was going on.

Any 172/182 Cssna RG is a belly landing waiting to happen. Very particular gear.

I love flying in airplanes. ANY type. I'm always sitting in a window seat and looking at the wings. I try and get seats over the wings if possible.

I just love it when the flaps or spoilers start coming out and you hear all the hydraulics starting to whine. You can look out and see the flaps coming down and watch the shape of the wing change as the LE stretches out and drops down. Then when you touch down and the reverse-thrusters go out and it gets REAL loud as all the jet exhaust gets blown forward.

I look around at the faces of the other passengers and most of them look like their about to pass a basketball out their colan.

It's hilarious watching people freak out in an airplane.

I''m not really an airplane pilot; but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

If you think the CRJ gear startles you in the back, you should see it up front! The whole cockpit shakes up and down for a few seconds. Now when I ride on a 737 or 757, I barely notice the gear coming down.
