Hit the wrong button,sorry.

Now on to the post..

In regards to the Spring Air frames bending on landing. The problem is not with the design of the gear. It is with the design of the aircraft.

If the wheels were to retract forward OR towards the rear of the aircraft, all the loads would be transfered in the strongest direction of the gear frame. Think about it. Almost all aircraft wheels retract toward the center of the fuselage, with a few exceptions (A-10, F-16, F-15 ect) On these we usually don't have a problem.

The problem is with our "Sport" jets, Kangaroos Hot Spots, Topcats, Interceptors, Starfires, ect that have the gear folding to the center of the fuselage.

This puts the maximum load toward the weakest direction of the gear frame!!

Somthing has to give. The "Flex" plate, the strut, or the gear will bend and/or break.

A simple solution to this is to install a 1/4" (or thicker) piece of aircraft ply vertically in FRONT of the frame. Be sure it has clearance to the sliding pin that retracts the gear, and must contact the rest of the frame and be glued to enough structure to support the load.

The main body of the gear MUST be supported in FRONT of the frame on our (High wing loaded) jet aircraft. A hard landing load is transfered to the frame through the heavy duty struts that most are now using. The struts do not flex rearward like the old wire with the coil spring in it would. And most flex plates will Flex or break and bend the Spring Air gear frames if they are not supported as I have outlined above.

I hope this will clear some of the confusion as to the durability of Spring Air Gear. I have been for many years and will continue to use Spring Air gear in all my jets.

Thanks for indulging me,
Terry Holston

Hi Terry

Excellent explanation. But i think you got front mixed up with back. As you suggest, the reason the frames are bending is because they are being side loaded in the direction of their least resistance to bending. Your 1/4" plywood support should go against the back of the retract shouldn't it? Then it would keep the back frame from moving, and because the two frames are connected, the front frame won't move.

Should push come to shove, the Spring-Air gear that I've been using all this time are VERY tolerant of being bent back to shape. All you need is a vise and some pliers or vise-grips. Afterward, they just do what they were doing before!

Hi Terry

Disregard my previous post. The ply should go against the FRONT frame.
