Hi guys. Please more detail on the builds and improvements. My better half just got me one of these (yet to arrive) and I'll have to make it look good and last, otherwise I'll be in big trouble. I don't have the CRRC engine but I do have a GFi45, which looks identical except for the muffler.

I'll post pics of mine as soon as i finish seting it up. its kinda a mess at the moment. First gas plane and has taken me some time to get it to this point of running. Due to other stuff tying up my time. But yestarday i taxied it around the front yard which was pretty fun lol. But Still need to clean up the wires and such so it looks good kinda a mess would be confusing to post pictures although there are some other post that have some really good pictures of setups for this plane. I forgot were the post was Now but i saved the pictures of another members build of this plane and he did an excellent job on it from what i can see very proffesional clean setup.
heres some of the pictures

The web Site that these pictures are on is another forum for giant rc airplanes and is blocked buy this site.

Funny thing about these Pics of this planes airframe in the pictures is that it is not exactlly like mine the wood structure is different but still the photo help give an idea on the placment of gear.

Hey there
Sorry for not getting back to you earlier about my Extra.
Sorry at the moment cant do pics, but on seeing yours theres not much difference to my own set up.
As people have said "the hardware is crap" I used it and used my brain to fit and strengthen things up, the control horns have no bolts going through the entire control surface so I just used the srews then drilled right through the control surface and the control horn and used a hex bolt and nylock nut to secure things, and she aint going to move !!
When I can post some pics I will. Oh by the way my extra is in white yellow and purple but the same plane!
cheers
AJ

My Extra arrived today and I've just finished looking it over. I haven't inspected the hardware yet but I fully expect to replace a lot of it. No use saving a few dollars and risking the whole plane.

Mine is also the White with Yellow and Purple scheme. The cowling white is a bit off white but that won't take long to remask and hit with a white that better matches the covering.

My GF45i engine looks like it will match the stock bolt pattern on the firewall BUT my carb and muffler are on opposite sides to the CRRC engines. This means the muffler I have won't clear the engine mount and I'll probably have to get a new muffler made up.

Despite the fact the hardware may be poor and the glue application appears conservative there is nothing in this plane that can't be addressed by a competent builder. For the price, it looks to be a good bargain. Anyhow, it's early days for me yet so I'll see if that opinion holds as I work through the assembly.

Any and all advice welcome....

Mine is still in the box, I haven't had time to start it due to an growing list of planes needing repair and a couple of projects needing completion (Oh, and then there was the shed fire on Saturday...which will slow things down).

I agree that the firewall needs strengthening (I'd rather it be more than adequate) and the joints will all be re-inspected and glued/resin'd as necessary.

The only thing I saw, on my initial inspection, that needs replacing in the wing tube. The tube is once again 'adequate' but it could be a little stronger. It will be replaced with heavier tubing.

ajniviuk,
am interested to hear how you went about removing wing bolts from the extra and would appreciate your advise. One of mine is brocken on delivery and need to repair.Would like to remove all four and do as you did and replace with blind nuts and bolt from within fuse.As you know, they are retained within ply packers within wing.I have received the wing box,but not the fuse box yet, apparently it was delivered several hundred klm's away, should be hear soon, hopefully undamaged.

Well the league is history I guess i finally maidened the plane it flew good until the Left elevator servo stiped in flight and the Left aeliron servo. Then it was headed for the ground in a death spiral. I managed to get it out of its death spiral and belly landed it tearing off the landing gear and shreading the left wing. Engine seems to be undamaged wont know till i do an inspection on it.
I should have known that the sevos couldnt handle the stresses s3001 futaba servos. guess i should have went for the higher tourqe servos. Live and learn first gasser meets it demise on maiden. But the rest of the equipment is still good in the plane and the engine appears to be in good shape. Destroyed the 20X10 Top Flight wood prop on landing Hopefully that didnt do any internal damage to the engine.

I was having a ball lots of fun till i lost control of it. So now i will think about getting something not Made in China. Like a Great planes extra 360 or something like that. So hope your extras keep on flying i might Try and fix mine but the fuse is so damged that i dont think it will happen i'll look it over take some pics. and put them on here for all to see.

Heres the plane after it crashed but i'm gonna fix it. Its worth it. give me a chance to change things a bit like the color. Chrome would look so cool with a little brighter colors i think and it would make it special
Some flexiable landing gear and of course definetly some better servos.
Little work and I think it would be a great flying plane again. Well it is a great flying plane just Not with cheap servos

Shame to hear that, at least it's rebuildable. I'm in the process of testing/inspecting some HS-645MG servos I took out of a crashed plane. Provided they are OK I'll be using them in the Extra.....which I have still to start on.
