I could use some help here with powerplant selection. I have, with exception to the Saito's, most of the glow stuff mentioned here and I can't make up which is the best to use. I was going to drop in a YS 140 FZ, then I read where the OS 120 would be plenty. I even noticed where one plane had a YS 120 in it and the flier didn't think it was enough. My OS 120 is the supercharged one but I am confused. I need this guy to do aerobatics but not 3D. Any input? I even have an Enya R120, a great engine, but he does like smaller props. I want to stay with 4 stroke for sound but I do have the 120 AX as well as the ST 2300 and 160 FX. Sorry for all the stuff thrown in here but I have never have seen a thread so all over the place when it came to engine selection so my discernment is being tested here.

Oh good, you're going to reopen this can of worms! Here's the first of many widely varying opinions: Mine has an OS FS 1.20 w/pump and it's more than enough engine for sport flying and scale aerobatics. A small amount of weight was added to the firewall to balance it. In my opinion the plane would easily fly in a very scale manner on a good .90 four stroke. However, I have not tried that combination.

I got this plane from one of the club guys; it had a Saito 91 in it and he was saying that it didn't fly well enough for him. He is big into scale. I agree, this engine choice thing is all over the board which is why I had to ask. I want more than to fly in a a scale like fashion(aerobatics) but not do the over the top thing.

Rm, just reading into your "flying style" I would put the 160 or the YS140 on it and be done. Way better to use throttle management than have not enough to manage. I have a DLE 30 on mine and enjoy it in a similar flying style as you seem to require.

I am getting ready to put a power 160 electric outrunner in mine, I think it will have a bit more power than the G-38 too.

Thank you for your observation; yes, I fly pattern stuff as well as scale. I don't want a scale ship like the P6 to have 3d tendencies, but I do want him to be able to do very nice 'precision' aerobatics as well as scale flight. I just know that at the upper end of the engine choice, one can underprop only so much. It is always good to have the extra power handy, but in reading the posts, I just couldn't get over the spread of engines used in this plane and where one flier would describe engine X as being more than enough, the next guy would mention how he pulled the very same engine because it wasn't enough for his type of flying, which really pushes the discernment factor in reading some of the posts and the trying to figure out just what kind of flying the individual might be engaged in. BTW, I will take your advice and drop in the YS 140 since he would look cool with a 3 blade prop.

Engine choices.....
Thereis a video on rcpower online magazine...with the o s 12h0fs..

It flew well.

I am going to use the saito Fg36, and a 3 blade prop...
This is the gasoline version of there 2.20 glow, so... You can see I am not worried about over powering
This bird...

The Monster Power 160 and ESC are in. I hope to be able to fly the hawk under electric power in the morning. I pulled the G-38 out, after adding a ply extension box to space the motor properly and adding the two 5 cell lipo batteries, the plane balanced at the same place as it had with the G-38. I will post some images of the conversion.

I'm looking forward to the flight results and the pics as I have 2 more planes to finish converting to electric and then my P-6E will be on the table. I'm thinking Power 110 or Power 160. Since yours balanced well with the 10S it will probably be the P 160. Waiting to see how accessable the batteries are. THANKS

Didnt have time to get the Hawk in the air this weekend. I did snap a few pictures of the installation and the batery access. The battery hatch is on top and works great using magnets to hold the cover in place. Oh, and the motor is a Tacon 160, not the power 160 as I stated earlier. I still have to paint the front of the motor to hide that ugly green color. I will be flying the first flight with a Zinger-pro 18 inch wood prop. I was able to get my 87 inch birddog in the air with a Power 160 installed and that plane also balanced perfectly and only needed less than half throttle to comfortably fly around the pattern. The birddog has a lot of scale details and is quite heavy, the Hawk should be a rocket with its 160.

Thanks for the pics. I like the way you made hatch from the cowl. I "assume" you needed the 10S to make CG as batts are all way to front. I'm looking forward to performance #'s on the Tacon 160 and yes the lime green needs painting over I have 2 Monster Power 160's on 10S since Febuary and they have been flawless. I've ordered a Tacon 160 and should get it in a plane this winter. It feel very smooth, good bearings I'd guess.

I appreciate the input; didn't make it to the video yet but will do so soon. I will very likely use the YS 1.40 since he is able to turn a 3 blade prop with some umph. I need this ship to fly scale but want to have enough to pull him through the manuevers well enough, not have to get a running start and dive just to complete a loop. Small update; just recently aquired an OS 1.20 Supercharged engine. Yes, I am toying with the idea.

I have over 30 flights on mine set up with a Tacon 160 electric powered by two 4000 5 cell lipos and a castle esc HV. The best plane I have ever flown. Even makes my landings look smooooooth. Prop is a 20 X 10 APC. Flew hands off on first flight. No corrections needed. Great Planes does it again. I hope they continue to make bi and tri planes for us WWI folks.

The two 5 cell 5,000 mA batteries are all the way up front for convienient access and in that location the CG was perfect. My son flew it yesterday 2 flights for the first time since removing the G-38 and installing the Tacon 160. Everything went great, the increase in power was amazing. We were flying off grass and the takeoff roll ended up being half of what it was on pavement, It didnt have to be that short but the we will need to get used to the increased power. On the second flight my son, who was flying it came in low and went to full throttle and pointed the nose straight up and it accelerated going up till he throttled back because it was too high. I havent timed the flight yet, but I am thinking 5 to 7 minuts of flight will be the maximum possible with this setup with average power settings throughout the flight. The plane sounds good with the 18X10 prop and is more fun to fly than it ever was with the G-38. The next flight will be at the MacDill AFB AIRFEST, we will be towing a video vehicle to video the Hawk from behind in flight along with the Thunderbirds and the rest of the aircraft at the airshow.

We flew our Hawk powered by a G-38 at the MacDill AFB 2010 AIRFEST last year. The G-38 vibrated the plane so much, the video didnt come out even with the camera packed in foam. This can be seen in the first video link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnlhcE2okdo

Since that time I have worked to get far better in-flight video. I finally isolated the video camera by not mounting it on the Hawk, but on a towed video platform made from a replacement fuselage for a Stryker. We took it up for a test flight as can be seen in the next video link. The video was taken so early in the morning when the sun was very low. We have now replaced the clear monofilament tow line with a flat black line that should be a lot less visible. I think the video would have come out even better if the sun had been higher overhead.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AfxvijRYUg

Now the latest, I have converted the Hawk to electric power and we have been invited to fly at MacDill AIRFEST 2011. We took the plane out for its first electric powered flights last weekend, it did great, we are ready for some good inflight video of the Hawk, the Thunderbirds and the rest of the aircraft at the airshow. Here is a link to some video taken last weekend of the Hawk test flights. The Hawk is after the F-16 flight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5u-VngO3wM

If everything goes well, this coming weekend is AIRFEST and we hope to have some great in-flight video of the Hawk flying at the event.
Denny

I have a Hawk sitting around for a year, mostly waiting for me to decide what to use for a power plant. I'm leaning towards a Syssa 30cc and was wondering if anyone has tried this setup and how they like the performance and how well did the cg  work out.
Thanks,
lumpy

Here is a link to my P-6E Hawk in flight at MacDill AFB AIRFEST 2011. We towed a modified Stryker with a video camera on board. We also had 5 video cameras on the Hawk. I will post some of the other videos if anyone is interested.

30cc might be more than you need. I recently converted mine from a Saito 1.50 glow to a DLE 20 gasser on a 16x8 prop and it is a dream. Seems to have more authority than the glow did and the speed is very scale. CG was dead on and required no change with the 20.

sap30cc would be great...
You can use a 3-blad prop as well....
FYI....splias used a 3-blade his 26cc and it was pushing the limits of his engine..
It was a 3-blade solo prop...real buet... I am going to try a 3-blade bela prop on my saito 36.... '
I have been saying this for years...I hope I can finally get to this plane this year and get it flying...

Heres a video of my Hawk flying with a Tacon 160 on 10 cells and an 18 X 10 meinz 3 blade prop. This was the first flight witgh that prop and wow, did it sound great! You could hear the plane even at the far end of the field. Check out the performance.

Ed, I spoke with you when I bought the kit. thought about electric, but went glow (i know glow since 1948 when i bought mu first baby spitfire engine from ed alexander).

Has an OS 1.20 AX identical to my SBD Dauntless. Broke in the engine last week, ready to test fly.

Go to YouTube enter "Furche SBD", to see Tom Blakeney fly the SBD with Sparky helpng. Firt SBD bit the dust iin Sherman last year, 2nd identical to first. 105 degrees, crosswind, buddy flying, got disoriented.

Didn't see you at the Electric Flyin at Benbrook last November. Hope you can make our 'AIRSHOW" AT THE NEW FIELD SEPT 30TH.

Yesterday, I was on Tower Hobbies web page. They were offering the P6E for $399.99. The add said limited quantities. Since it is my favorite airplane I bought a spare. I spoke to Tower this morning they have one left in the warehouse. I wonder how long it will be before they bring this plane out again.

WOW, Sounds like the second release of Hawks is about sold out. In my opinion, the best ARF ever produced. Thats why I own two of them.

Crashed my Hawk last Aug. 19th after 5 years of great flights. Had a radio brown out and it was over before I could blink. Busted up the top and bottom wing but saved the Zenoah 28cc magnito engine. Fuse was OK except the hard wood strips inside that the struts attached to.  Thought about buying new wing set but when I saw the price reduction for a whole new plane I ordered one. Glad I did. Got it last week and if I had waited till Christmas I would have been out of luck. Don't know why they keep discontinuing this plane because it is a beautiful creature and a joy to fly. Going to put a DLE 30 on her this time and build in a full cockpit for a full body pilot like I did my last one. Glad I didn't wait to order a new one. I Love this plane.

By the way, the Zenoah 26cc magnito was the perfect motor for the Hawk, hardly any extra nose weight to haul around and she flew and sounded like a Beast! Only had to cut out a small hole in the cowl for the volocity stack and as an afterthought if I had just taken off the stack it would have worked just as well inside the closed cowl without cutting the hole. Won't have to do that with the DLE30.
