I was wondering if a ST2300 would be a good choice for this plane. Wonder about how much of the cowling would have to be removed? Any thoughts or experiences out there? Thanks.

Yellowflier

Thanks a lot for the answer I will think about that.

Slviper

Thanks also, Do you use another fuel tank size for the 1.80?... How many time do you fly the plane?... I mean, how many time do you have fuel?...

I think your instalation looks great!

I recieved mine Thursday. The quality is stunning! There isn't a wrinkle ANYWHERE and the fiberglass parts are perfect too.

Funny that Yellowflier should mention a YS. A buddy of mine who is a pattern flier suggested the YS 1.40 Sport as the perfect match for this plane also. In his words, they really snort and ALWAYS run good. Don't recall seeing anyone on this Forum that used one? Still making the engine choice myself so I am listening to all this with great interest!

Dont pay atention to mine... remember Im looking for the best engine option to fly at 7,500 feet over the level of the sea... Maybe your conditions are different

I bought an H9 F4U Corsair 60, last year with a saito 100 engine... and Its very near to fail... I suffer with the loops and climbs.

Thats because Im so worried.

Hi Michael
This setup works really well I am using a modified BCM pitts muffler and
there is no need to cut the Lovely hawk cowl just a hole for the glo igniter
I am running 2 batteries 1 as a backup This is just done using 2 switches
and a spare chanel on the receiver and that is mounted under the cowl so no
xtra weight is needed The mods to the muffler were to change the angle of
the 2 outlet pipes And then made a wooden bracket for the silicone
extensions This flys under 1/2 throttle using an master airscrew 16x8 3
blade prop Sounds great in the air I also added a scale tail wheel in the
scale position Lot better Also using Pull pull on the rudder hate the hard
wire system
Hope this helps
Rob

I will be using on-board glo. From what you mention, I shouldnt have to cut the cowl at all. Thanks for the tip on the 3 blade. That is what I am going to run also. I have also decided to mod the tailwheel. I like the pull-pull design also. Thanks so much for the tips. Got any pictures? I would like to see them. You can send as many as you have to magical_merlin@comcast.net. Thanks again.

This is why I chose the Saito 180 GK:
Speedpro stated earlier in the thread he was flying the Saito 125 and went to a 150 Saito and said it was a GREAT move.

So the 150 would have been my choice but:

180 Golden Knight AAC: PP

Overview
Saito's FA-180 engine is fast becoming the pilots choice for powering 1.20 size airplanes. The FA-180 offers a 20% displacement increase over the popular Saito FA-150. What does this mean? How about a 8% power increase over the FA-150 and an awesome 14% power increase over the FA-120. And what’s more the FA-180 fits in the 1.20 size mount. So if your old 1.20 just doesn’t have what it takes, replacing it with the Saito FA-180 is no problem. Simply put the FA-180 is the most powerful in its class.

So for 30 bucks difference I get an 8% power reserve, I can swing the 16x8 3 blade MAS.

As for fuel consumption they state:
"We did notice the 180 is a bit more thirsty — it consumed the 16 oz. tank in just 9 minutes at high throttle settings. If you want to fly longer, a bigger tank is advised."

The good news is with loads of power and torque you fly at half throttle or less and get plenty of air time. And even if you do not choose to fly the Hawk vertical, you can if you need to get out of trouble. While I am no expert on RC in my experience engine stats are great but in the real world things happen like weak glow plugs, weak fuel, out of tune etc. all these things make an engines output LESS not MORE. Also Scale planes are fun but things like wind, gravity and altitude are not scale so we need all the power we can to keep us in the air and out of the trees etc. IMHO. You will love the plane.
Thanks,
Steve

Hello!

I have ordered the HAWK from Tower and have a few questions: Please forgive me if the info is in the thread and yes I read the thread but now my brains are a dish rag.

1. What gas engine fits without hacking the cowl up? I was leaning toward the G-23.

2. Has Keleo made a scale exhaust for the G-23 or . . .?

3. Has anyone ran the Solo prop with success on a gas engine for this plane?

4. What problems need to be addressed with this kit out of the box? Lack of glue, wrong hardware, upgrades of hardware and structure?

Please any advice or suggestions is appreciated.

Thanks,

Perry

I used a Brilelli 26, it is outstanding. My first purchase from Scott, not the last. The Brilelli is very powerful, light, and ready to fly the minute you receive it.
I maidened my hawk last week. It flies like a dream. I have a G-26 in a Sig 1/4 scale Cub, ready to take to the skies tomorrow. The G-26 is much heavier than the Brilelli. I have seen a couple of g-26 powered Hawks, they come out nose heavy, at least this 2 I saw had lead added on the tail... They fly great, nevertheless.
Only change I did to the plane as it comes out of the box was to change the screws that fit the cabanes to the fuse, and I also reinforced the area (inside the fuse, with a little playwood) where this screws hold the cabanes, a fast and easy fix that gives me added peace of mind.
I am also thinking of reinforcing the wheel pants from inside w/a little epoxy. I might also change the wheels to a slightly bigger size, I fly off grass.

Good luck with yours.

Gerry

I roger everything Gerry says: I have a Brillelli 26 SS in mine as well. Perfect for power and balancing. Absolutely no extra weight needed. I also reinforced the area where the carbanes are mounted onto. I used blind nuts on the inside. Other then that there is really nothing else to do to improve this top quality ARF from GP.

Hi..

Finally mine 've arrived yesterday... It came from USA thru my home in México City... and she arrived in perfect conditions. When I saw she, I need to take a moment to understand the wonder of plane I've received. I've ordered the Saito 180 and a brand new radio sistem with 2.7 ghz also. Its my first 180, and is my first Biplane and the first plane of this size too that I have. So you can guess Im very moved.

The first words that came to my mind were "Oh what an enormous plane is this" and "Oh what a beautiful plane", so if you're doubting about buying one.. go for it!

For personal order first I need to repair my H9 Corsair that suffer some minor damage in a hard landing because of a dead engine. But I cant wait to long to start building this beautiful plane.

Thanks for this thread

Alex
