I'm considering a QM-40 racer. What can you guys recommend? Here are my requirements. I'd like for it to be some sort of "ARF" - preferrably a composite painted in the mold. I have a Jett 50 that I'd like to put on it. (I realize this may not be "race legal" but since I've never raced I figured this would be a good place to start) I have owned and flown Predators and a Whiplash so I am somewhat skilled in high speed flight. My current/favorite style of flying is IMAC and 3D aerobatics. I'd like to hear what you guys may suggest - manufacturers, kitmakers, and if any of you have a nice used plane you'd like to unload, I may be interested there also. Email me at garytrapp@carolina.rr.com.

Yea, Sam. Thanks for the link but I had seen that one and was hoping to get that list narrowed down a bit to maybe a few kits that are better than others. Or at least a few opinions of which are better. Thanks again.

I've not flown a bad Q40.

The Dago, Vendetta, Proudbird, Miss Ashley, and Polecat all fly very good (those are the only ones I've flown, so thats all I can comment on). The trick is getting them set up properly (C.G. and Throws), the test flight can be exciting, so these are definately not for the faint of heart. They are tricky taking off (you absolutely have to use rudder, or you will crash), they fly great if the throws aren't to crazy (snap rolls are not fun with these planes), and they glide forever. I actually think that landing safely is the hardest part of flying a Q40.

for someone starting out, I would try to find a slightly used one, and go from there. If you haven't flow a Quickee with a high performance engine (nelson or Jett), I would definately start there.

Personally, I like the Vendetta and Miss Ashley best in terms of how they fly, but I think the polecat is probably the fastest for straight line speed.

Good Luck!

Thanks Dave for the advice. How are these at taking off from and landing on grass. All the fields I fly at are grass - which may be a good thing for getting them slowed down on landings. At least that was my experience with the Predators. And yes I've flown both a Whiplash/Jett 50 config. and Predators on that same engine so am familiar with the speed.

Grass is ok, as long as it isn't too thick. We have a sod field that we fly at, and its just too tricky (at least for me) to slow them down enough so that a wheel doesn't get snagged.

Our other field is grass also, but not thick like sod, and its fine. We like to run them up on a board to help keep dust, dirt, and sand out of the venturi. Those little props sure suck a lot of debris. Our group tends to recycle the older q40 models, and "slightly worn" planes to the newer guys. Is there anyone in your area that flies these things??

Also, occasionally there are older formula 1 planes put up for sale, although not as sleek as a q40, still are quite fast.
