Kregg,

Call DA and ask them. The distance from the exhaust exit to the front of the can is critical to performance. I believe DA will tell you 12", but check with them to make sure. That will give you your answer - base it on engine performance, not balance!

you will want to use headers that are between 11 to 12 inches in length with those cans. that is measured along the centerline of the header.

hope that helps

Hi Kregg, i hope you didn't glue your stab tube in yet.You have to put the wings on first, set the incidence and bolt them onto the fuse, then stand back and align the stabs with the wings, then with the stabs on and aligned with the wings you can glue the tube in.I made the mistake on the first carden i built by glueing in the stab first without aligning them with the wings and had to cut the stab tube out and Dennis had to send me a new tube.I know this is your first carden kit so i'm just trying to help out if i think you might have a problem. Kregg: I am a long way from needing a cockpit. I should probably start the plane first. Yours is coming along well though. I will start cutting up the motor box on mine this week. I had a chance to see another 260 under construction yesterday & this one has been on a serious diet. I think I will do similar. I have some pictures of it but will ask his permission before posting them. I will also send him a link to your cockpits. I will stop typing now so you can get back to building.

Tony: Thanks for the header comments. I spoke with Brian @ DA and he indicated about the same as you have. He said if they were a bit longer I would loose a small amount of power but have better transition. He also recommended that I buy new KS headers that will fix my alignment problem. I ordered them from DA.

Jim: Thanks for looking out for me and please keep that up! I want a extra set of eyes on my build, just in case I screw something up. However, in this case I'm OK. I have not glued in stab tube or wing tube. The stab tube is just in place loose. I understand the wing alignment issue. I will be starting on the wings soon. I'm working on the 4 large sheeting pieces.

Dave: Please talk with your friend and post pix of the diet if you can. I have been Conservative so far, but I'm going to step up that issue. When speaking with Brian Huffmeier he told me about some areas to lighten as well. He is going to give me pix and I will share them here. Brian has more experience with the 260 than about anyone, so I trust him. I was nervous about the big lightening holes I added to the gear plate (per the plans), but Brian is doing lots more with no problems. We will see. I will be getting my Dremel busy with more holes very soon as well.

Thx,
Kregg

Quist: That is certainly aggressive in the lightening department. It is hard to tell from your pix, but it looks like you are also removing some of the side sheeting down the sides of the fuse. Is that true? The real question is how far should we go when lightening. I'm going to be a bit more conservative that yours, but I will do more.

quist,
How did you cut the ply out? Looks nice. Any idea how much weight you took out? Could you put all the peices you cut out on a scale and get an estimate?

Thanks
Rob

I am not building this plane. He wanted to see how people are lightening the fuse so I posted the picture. I believe this motor box was a 22oz wieght reduction.

I did the same cutouts on my 330 with the exception of the area inbetween the F1 former and the firewall. I used a 1" hole saw in a drill press to do all the corners and the I used a hand jig saw for the rest of the cutouts.

Ivan has created a photo site so I wont post the pictures the link is http://ivankristensen.photosite.com/ Ivan said he shaved 1 pound 6.1 oz out of the engine box and 2 oz per side by cutting the sides of the fuse. He also said another option would be to buy lighter wood for the sides and not cut it out.

Dave,

I went with the lighter wood on the sides with my 330 and save 6oz. From the wing back I went to contest grade 1/16th sheeting. I capped the truss with 3/8 x 1/16th strips then put 1/16th sheeting over the top. I like having the fuse fully sheeted.

Here are my motor box sides. I weighed all the parts (except the firewall) before and after. I also cut the landing gear plate in half. The difference in weight before and after was 16 oz. I also plan to drill a 2" hole in the firewall as well. I also removed some of the foam from the bottom deck before sheeting. I plan on placing the rudder servos in the tail, so I also will remove the 1/8 balsa from the fuse sides.
