This is how I did the one that required a cut out:

1) Get the plane standing up like Tom says.

2) Get someone to help and hold the cowl off to the side but about where it will be when attached to the airframe.

3) Take a sharpie or something that can be removed with alcohol and mark on the cowl where you see the engine passing below the outline. Just a scribe mark. Do this for all four sides by holding it to the side and above the airframe.

4) Take a dremel tool and cut this area out. Take out the smallest possible area because you can always make it bigger.

5) Now use gravity to "hold" the engine in place and then put on the cowl. Make the necessary adjustments.

6) Now that it is big enough to accept the engine, line everything up and mark where the standoffs go so you can drill the necessary holes.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them or drop me a PM.

so ben let me get this straight - you mark the cowl , then cut the cowl out to accept the engine , then put in the engine then place the cowl on , then mark and drill your holes , then i guess just screw the motor to the firewall . is that it do i have everything right and how it shoud be . let me know - thanks

It's a little more complicated than that. Did you read the manual?

If the standoffs bolt to the engine and you can set the engine on the forewall and it will stay in place it might be that simple. You may need to remove the carb to allow it to stand on the standoffs.

Take some construction paper and tape it to the fuse where the engine will go beyond the cowl, place your engine on the standoffs and stand it up on the firewall as if it is mounted where it looks like it should go. Use the paper to make a good cutout template where the engine will extend through. Take the engine off put the cowl on, with the paper still taped on the fuse simple lay it over the cowl and you have a perfect template for what you need to cutout.
Then follow the reat as previously stated, works great.

With any of the single cylinder engines, it's often helpful to make a small bracing block that will support the cylinder head when you're positioning the engine. Those darn singles always want to fall over. don't forget to measure the distance from the firewall to the cowl face. Add 1/16 to 1/8" for spinner backplate clearance and that will be the size of the s
"stand off's" you will need. It's just as light, and cheaper, to make your own stand off's from hardwood blocks. If you make a block that runs the length of one pair of the mounting holes it's a lot easier to set the engine in place and position it rather than mess with 4 different legs. Another nice thing about only using two blocks is that you can scribe around the edges after the engine is properly located. Removing the engine from the blocks lets you sight through the mounting holes in the blocks and accurately drill the holes in the firewall.

Be certain tha all the stand off's or blocks are all the same length. The engine side thrust is already built into the firewall, and additional side thrust is not needed.

Zach;

I live in Cape Coral and own one of Tom's Giles. Using his method I got the best engine fit I have ever had. I now do it on all my planes. If you want maybe we can get together and I can help. There are also at least two other people at the club that own a Wildhare that may be able to help you.

Let me know.

Randy
