All the info you have rec'd so far has been very good. I would stay away from all the low end ofna products except for the Hyper 7 TQ - for the money that is a very good buggy and good quality too! I speak from experience on the low end ofna's. NOW -- if you do want to get an ofna - the Hyper 8.5 is a great buggy! Well made and comes with a ton of hop-ups and is a very good buggy!

The jammin is a good choice too.....sounds like you have been doing your homework and that is good. The local Powhatan guys will keep you on the correct path so I would keep on asking questions and listening to what you hear from them and keep on doing your research. It is a big investment and you don't want to spend any more than is necessary.

The only RTR that I have seen that is decent is the Sportswerks Turmoil. Comes with a good engine and a 2.4 ghz radio and the buggy itself is a good one. But if you think you want to really get into this hobby - you may not want to go with a RTR. Just do your homework on this one.

Also -- I traded for an on-road car with Mac a couple of years ago and I can tell you that the vehicle was in very good shape! So don't rule out that option either.

Which ever way you go -- just make sure you can easily get parts.

Joel from Charlottesville

WOW! You guys have been EXTREMELY helpful with all of the information you have provided! I am definitely looking forward to my new buggy purchase and also looking forward to catching up with you all at the track once I've got a race ready buggy.

I think I do want a new buggy and at this point, I think I'm leaning towards the Jammin (X1X RTR). It seems really solid for under $500, and for my first 1/8 buggy I think it will work really well. The Mugen is certainly nice as well, but the kit and everything to complete it is likely to put me a bit over budget.

So a few more questions for you guys:

should I expect to buy online or are there any decent hobby shops within an hour or so from Richmond where i could find a good price?

Also, what's the deal with the Violator 9.5 for 399? Is that a solid car? (Under $400 will be a much easier sell for the wife...)

Thanks again for all of the help you all have provided !!!

Well the thing about the Violator is that it is based off of one of Ofna's already cheap buggies, the 9.5. Also it's called the Violator because it is an outlaw buggy. It is wider and a bit longer than official rules allow, which means that it can't be used at official races.
The Jammin RTR is a great choice, especially since the revised X version is coming out. I would buy online, you can find the cars for really cheap, even with shipping costs. I know www.towerhobbies.com gives great coupons online that you can use to save up to $100! Local hobby shops around here are pretty crummy, and very expensive. Here are some other sites that I know carry the Jammin:

www.towerhobbies.com
www.nitrohouse.com
www.carolinasrc.com
www.amainhobbies.com
www.acehardwarehobbies.com

Alright - I'm getting close to making a decision. (sorry to keep bugging you guys with this)

It's between the Ofna Jammin RTR and the Sportwerks Turmoil RTR (but I'm pretty much sold on the Turmoil)

Based on your recommendations and the info I've been able to find online, it seems that the Turmoil is the way to go. The Spectrum radio is clearly better and I wouldn't have to worry about radio/servos for a while. The RC Universe review also says that the engine is very strong and reliable, and it's one of the best vaules in an RTR around $500.

I realize that a kit is the best option if my budget was higher, and I'm also a novice who is just getting into 1/8 racing, so I think I'll start with a nice RTR and go from there.

Anyone see any serious faults with the Turmoil?

Get the turmoil, you are right about the radio. That is one thing you will never need to upgrade!

I decided to get back in to the hobby yet again. Am almost done with my truck; hopefully my buggy will be ready to race by the end of the month.

Thanks
Calvin
