Yes we are racing. Warm weekends for now, but once it gets consistently warm then most weekends.

Had to edit this based on recent events. I thought I'd be ready but I don't think I will be.

It's a really long story but I basically blew up my motor (got glow plug coil pieces in there I think) and am in the process of rebuilding it.

The piston and sleeve is here but like an idiot I failed to realize that I also needed a new connecting rod (Just ordered that today). I think there is too much play between the rod and the wrist pin caused by a worn hole in the conrod (from the previous damaged state the engine was in)

There is currently about .1mm of play there. I am assuming that the tolerance here should be very tight and that I would risk further damage by running with a slighly loose conrod/wrist pin connection.

If I put the piston top flat on the table I can pull the conrod up/down just slightly about .1mm. This is bad, correct?

Could I get away with that for one day?

I'm no engine expert but I've rebuilt a motor and ported another. I don't know what the tolerance should be between the conrod and wrist pin- but I would deinitely replace it while rebuilding the engine. The conrod cost is usuall very small compared to the cost of the piston and sleeve- so think of it as insurance. I know you are probably feeling like a kid on Christmas eve and want to do whatever it takes to race this Sunday- but I would just wait for the new conrod to come in.

In the stories I have read about blown engines- it is usually the conrod that seems to shatter or snap. Your conrod may have been stressed with the additional friction cause by pushing the piston through the sleeve while grinding bits of glowplug coil.

Someone else may disagree with me here- but I would stay on the safe side.

0.1mm of play is WAY too much. Should be a few 0.01mm at most. If the crank pin is out of round by 0.05mm it needs to be changed.

Thanks guys - that is what I figured. I am totally a kid on Christmas eve and am dying to get out there but I will take the safe approach. Doesn't make any sense to ruin the $40 piston and sleeve I just replaced.

I'm interested in what you guys think about this.

Apparently there are two versions of the Mach 427. I didn't realize that when I ordered parts. Pretty soon I will start paying more attention to what I'm doing.

I ordered parts from the orange head/LST2 version. After some forum research and visual comparisons, the sleeve has smaller ports and the head button is shorter/less compression on the orange head version - so I know I'd be losing some power using these parts.

My question is - I've read a lot of opinions that say the 8ight mach 427 has too much torque for 1/8 buggy racing (many people suggest setting throtle end point to like 70-80% to help reduce wheelspin). These parts should fit fine, since it's the same crankcase and diameters and what not.

So should I use the orange head version of the sleeve/piston and head to 'tone down' the 427 a bit? This would probably also give better fuel economy. OR send these back for the right ones that will have the most power?

I am tempted to send these back and get the teal head versions...

Thoughts?

I would send them back for the appropriate parts. The orange head parts may change something up in the engine besides power, such as timing which can greatly affect performance all around.

So WOuld I

Just reduce your end point on throttle control- or you can gear it for more top speed and less torque-that would be to your advantage on a larger/longer track.

I probably won't be racing tomorrow but I may make an appearance for a little while.
