Status: offline 		For the people how don't like to wind the coil.
All you need to modify - 1 (high power) transistor (BUV46) or N-FET (2SK2039) and a small ignitioncoil from a bike (6Volt).
Connect the output from the timerboard to the base/gate, the collector to the - from the coil, the emittor to ground.
Connect the + from the coil to the + from the battery and you are ready to spark.

Status: offline 		I change the schematic a bit, the oscillator will start by himself (=spark) and don't stop.
You can find some pic on CDI
I use a transformer like Charlie do, but you must place some paper between the two ferrits.
I place a diode between the cathode and anode and some 100nF caperistors in the power line.
It's important to feed the boards from the powerboard to the pic-board and not otherwise.
C7=4,7uF/16V, if you use a other SCR, you need to resize the resistor R6.
You need more current to open the gate, for example BT148=200uA / TIC126=20mA !!
Change R9 = 10kOhm and use D1=1N4007

Nice Job on the PCBs.Is that transformer from a PC modem?After I wind the transformer I use scotch tape to hold the
E cores together and then dip it in Polyurethane. I like all the Boats I guess that where you get your name.

Status: offline 		I find this transformer in a old computer-powersource.
I use also normal scotch-tape, I don't dip the coil jet.....first it have to work properly (thats now)
The spark is great and powerful with the coil I use, it's a coil from a mopped (50cc).
(I putt a pic on the site, so you can see what I mean)
Remove the iron from this coil and solder a lead on it (=ground)
Only still one problem......I get a high Voltage back from the ignition to my power-source.
I think I need a other diode in the + from the battery to eliminate this.
I"ve still one question about using a R-C (22nF/400V and 22 Ohm) on the + - from the diode-bridge.

This one is ready now ild_Thing 2 and I will use the ignition on this boat to perform the speed to more then ~70 Mph.
I have to wait the ice is melt and the weather is better, very cold this moment (0 degrease in daytime)

I can Email you a alternative circuit for the trigger using a SCR where you should 'nt receive any reversevoltage to the Power supply. 740v is a little much .

BTW Nice Job on the Boats. 0 degrees? I guess you will have to wait until spring.

I putt some files and pics on my CDI site.
The new schematic works fine with the component add, no problems anymore
The pics: new pcb (ont1.jpg) and schematic (ont2.jpg/big and ont2a.jpg/small)
The files: pcb (layo1) and schematic (orcad)
Layo1 start with c:\layo1\pman\pman.pif
Orcad start with c:\orcad\draft.exe (twice spacebar, load ontstek2.sch)
Both small (old) dos programs
Unzip the files into c:\orcad and c:\layo1
You can also download for free Layo1, Orcad download Orcad.
Both downloads are new window programs and have to muts options.

I can't wait untill spring.......I like to play with the boats, but the ice must go away.

Status: offline 		I have two electric motors, one 0 till 550 rpm and one 10.000 till 30.000
Test with both motors the sparks are very strong and regular on the scoop, no hickups.
I've to test the pcb with 0 till 20.000 rpm, but I can do this only at my work.(tomorrow)
My variable powersource have only 1 output and I use this to the pcb, so I can't putt a motor on it.

Update 09-jan-2006
PCB (CDI) tested - 0 till 30.000 rpm......great, no problems !!!!
Puls between timerboard and powerboard are egual, no *lost* sparks.
Dwell = 1 ms

You could probably make this work on 12volts by using a 7508 voltage regulator to drop the 12 volts to 5 volts.I have another circuit that is designed for 12 volts.Here it is.It would be easier to just add the 5 volt voltage regulator.

New pcb is 3,5 x 6 cm = 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" (?), for RC-models small is better.
I'm using a small ferritring, outside 18 mm, inside 10 mm, high 7 mm (same wdg's as original)
The high Voltage is about 150 / 150 Volt.....a littlebit low for the ignition coil I use.
The x-tal is replaced by a resonator 4MHz, this include the capacitors.
Strobe isn't on the pcb anymore, I don't use it.

Yes. This is just another version of a CDI. ITs Designed for 12V. Be careful though. with this circuit the sparkplug electrode will shock you with the just the circuit energized.

Yes you are right the original circuit dicharged the voltage through the coil.In this circuit the cap is charged and the IRF740 just grounds one side of the coil. you could replace the IRF740 with a SCR.I have done it and its works the same. You can just use a voltage regulator and the original circuit.

Status: offline 		In *old* cars, the ignitionpoints contact the ignitioncoil to ground, in this schematic the transistor will do this.
A other differend is the Voltage, in cars 12 Volt to the coil (but this take a lott off current).
With a high Voltage, the current can/will be lower, so small battery can bu used.
