This isn't "original work", but was posted on the SF bay area Craig's List.

Subject: Nigerian Astronaut Wants To Come Home

Dear Mr. Sir or MS. Madaam,

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE-STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

I am Dr. Bakare Tunde, the cousin of Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde. He was the first African in space when he made a secret flight to the Salyut 6 space station in 1979. He was on a later Soviet spaceflight, Soyuz T-16Z to the secret Soviet military space station Salyut 8T in 1989. He was stranded there in 1990 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. His other Soviet crew members returned to earth on the Soyuz T-16Z, but his place was taken up by return cargo. There have been occasional Progrez supply flights to keep him going since that time. He is in good humor, but wants to come home.

In the 14-years since he has been on the station, he has accumulated flight pay and interest amounting to almost $ 15,000,000 American Dollars. This is held in a trust at the Lagos National Savings and Trust Association. If we can obtain access to this money, we can place a down payment with the Russian Space Authorities for a Soyuz return flight to bring him back to Earth. I am told this will cost $ 3,000,000 American Dollars. In order to access his trust fund we need your assistance.

Consequently, my colleagues and I are willing to transfer the total amount to your account or subsequent disbursement, since we as civil servants are prohibited by the Code of Conduct Bureau (Civil Service Laws) from opening and/ or operating foreign accounts in our names.

Needless to say, the trust reposed on you at this juncture is enormous. In return, we have agreed to offer you 20 percent of the transferred sum, while 10 percent shall be set aside for incidental expenses (internal and external) between the parties in the course of the transaction. You will be mandated to remit the balance 70 percent to other accounts in due course.

Kindly expedite action as we are behind schedule to enable us include downpayment in this financial quarter.

Please acknowledge the receipt of this message via my direct number 234 (0) 9-234-2220 only.

Yours Sincerely, Dr. Bakare Tunde

I got a chuckle out of the first few of this type of email I received. Now I've seen so many that it's no longer even funny.

Sickest thing is that according to Clark Howard, the Nigerian scams alone bring in something close to $10,000,000,000 a year for the scam artists.
Ole' P. T. Barnum miscalculated how many suckers are born every minute. Or maybe it's just that the population increase over the last century has upped that particular birth rate.

If you want to see a lot more of these, visit www.419eater.com . They are even using the snail-mail to try to sucker people in. One got sent to my wife. She was all excited until I showed her on that site where it was a scam. I e-mailed one back after recieving one and told him that I was well aware of what he was trying pull with the Nigerian scam. He responded by telling me that he wasn't in Nigeria!
WARNING! These people are not to be messed with! Report the sender to your ISP.

What makes this even funnier, over the years, I have never gotten any of these scams off the net - - until this year when my company installed an expensive highly rated firewall. Now, I get 12 to 15 of these things a week at work! Like the firewall attracts the scam artists the way a fire attracts moths.

I've found that they seem to hit certain ISP's. When I was on AOL, I got a lot of them. Now I have 2 ISP's, Net Zero and People PC. They are now starting to show up on People PC but haven't had any with Net Zero.
The Astronaut one is new to me though, an original. Most Astronauts don't get paid very well. The sender should have said Cosmonaut anyway as that's what they call them over there.
If you do a search for whatever Bank that they use, you'll come up with a blank as they are non-existant.
These clowns always seen to be Doctors for some strange reason.
Watch out if you sell anything in the RCU Marketplace as we've have some scammers in there also. Report them immediately to the Marketplace Mod. They'll want to send you a (usually) Western Union money order for way over the amount and want you to sent them back the difference plus give you a "little extra" for your trouble. They say that they'll arrange for pick-up of the item.
