I have had my Typhoon since Christmas and have flown it a lot. I like the plane and have a lot of fun with it. The plane had problems right out of the box. Both the esc and receiver were defective. Horizon replaced them upon notification. They were very cooperative. Then the rudder and elevator servos stripped the gears. I replaced them with HS-81 servos with no further problems. I am flying with a E-flite 2100 Lipo and the replacement esc crapped out after a lot of flight time. I replaced it with a E-flite 20 amp servo and it is much smoother. No more gear grinding at motor start up. I think the new esc has a soft start function that ramps up the speed. It is still a good deal for getting in to 3d flying. I would recommend replacing components with better quality ones as they fail. The body and wings are tough. My buddy has a striker and we have had two mid air collisions and the stryker was the looser. I now have grey paint stripes on my wings and prop and he has a new body.

My Typhoon 2 3D just arrived today........now Im a bit concerned about flying it at a park ( dont want to lose the elevators and hit someone ) due to the comments regarding unexpected and early servo failures. The main reason I went for an electric park flyer was to have an airplane I could fly at a park. I was hoping to get in some "casual" flying without taking a trip to the club flying field all the time.
FYI: Normally I would not be at all concerned about flying around other people , but Im not gonna put anyone in a park at risk of an accident. ( and , yes of course , ANY plane could fail, I could kill someone with one of my 10lb nitro planes too, but....... I hope everyone reads this not as a rant but just a caution.

Just wanted to point out what could be worse than replacing airplane parts.

Lets keep testing and posting and hopefully we wont have too many more failed servos.

Later guys
Bill

Im gonna pick up an 81 MG tomorrow and put it on the elevator for safety's sake. I can fly with rudder failure or without ailerons but not without the elevator I figure the extra stock servo will come in handy later. I have loosened up the hinges and set up minimun throws so not to over drive the servos for the first few flights, which I hope will be tomorrow. I'll review my maiden flight then.

Well Im posting in Park Flyers , Saito Engines and ARF all at once..whew. Ok , Im off work for a few days, gotta get some "round to its" done.
SO , I just bought a Hitec 81MG (metal gears ) servo to upgrade the elevator servo in my Typhoon 2 3D , but , Im not sure how the stock one is held in place? ALSO: when I removed the servo arm I see that the splines on the post are metal? The stock servo is a Park Zone DSV 130 M . So I wonder if this new servo has metal gears? T
Thanks, Bill

ALABAMA
To 'loosen" the hinges I cut the decals at the hinge line and after working the control surfaces to the max I then took a hemostat ( has a blunt and smooth tip when closed ) and basically dragged the tip a few times down the hinge line , top and bottom, to get the two surfaces to be more the shape of a balsa cut hinge line . ALSO, I did readjust the throws ( they are way extreame even on low rates ). I REALLY recommend that you dont try to fly this plane with the stock setting at least for the first flight.....

ok ok, I SWEAR Im not just posting to hear myself talk, but, again I came across the answer to my own question... I even went to my LHS Hobby Town and they couldnt find out
METAL GEARS yes
Reusable ZX10 72MHz radio system including digital, metal gear 3-wire servos for precise control and fast response Im gonna leave this post anyway, someone else might be interested.

Hey bill,
I really apreciate the help but after the part about cutting the decal on the hinges to loosen them up i dont understand a word that you are saying... I do not have any terminoligy in this hobby so could you please elaborate... Can you also explain this(quote)( I REALLY recommend that you dont try to fly this plane with the stock setting at least for the first flight.....)

One more thing that is for any one to answer please i beg you!!!! I ust got my plane i am very happy but i do not undersand the programming the esc....All those beeps and tones and throttle up and throttle down I JUST DONT GET IT!!! Can anyone please talk me threw this step i have the stock bettery (3 cell 1800 mAh Li-Po) and a 3 cell 2200 mAh Li-Po battery...

And last question, maybe its just my paranoya but i want everything to go uneventfull, On my charger on the wire that you plug into your car or 12 v i believe it is There seams to be ome melted foam or something like that and im not sure if i should charge my batteries with it(I a very cautious)??????

I apreciate any help anyone can give me and if someone answeres my questions i should be in th air by tomorrow or saterday or a day in bettween so i can get a video up hear...

No probem. Im not the best at describing some techniques or fixes but here goes . If you look at the hinge line ( the control surface butts up against the wing and then is attached with hinges. Now , if you look at a balsa wing and control surface you will see that the two pieces come togeather tapered. I just made that taperd groove a little more pronounced.
If you flex the hinges as far as possible ( servo rod disconnected ) it will "break them in" because they are sorta thick and stiff. The plane ( it is 3D) is set up so the control surfaces, ie: rudder, ailerons, and elevator will move probably 2 or more inches each way when you move the transmitter stick. THATS ALOT. You will be in for a wild ride unless you move the push rods from the last hole in the servo arm and control horn back to about the 2nd hole. Aim for about say,1/2 " travel up or down. Use the low rates setting and this will allow you to fly much smoother and later if you want more "action" you can reset them.

On the issue with what appears to be melted foam on the charger plug , it just may be some of the generous amount of styrofoam packing. Do you have a local hobby shop close by or a AMA club member.

hope this helps some
Never hesitate to ask.......I never do!

I decided to screw the programming and have my maiden flight today... And all i can say is that this bird is amazing!!!!! i love it! It was kinda windy for a maiden flight on a new plane but i did it anyways . It was about 7mph winds speed. And this plane gets thrown arround alot in the wind i find. But i was getting cocky and i decided to try to hover a couple meaters off the ground (i have this on video i will post it soon) witch i managed for about 4 seconds. before a small gust of wind comes and toples the plane inverted and i come about one foot off the ground and fly away inverted safly. VERY SCARY!!!! DONT DO THAT AGAIN i told myself... But all in all it is an excellent plane and i would definatly recoment it to anyone who wants to get into 3D flying and who would probably have a simulator...( like me)

Videos comming soon, I PROMISE!

I've had my Typhoon for 3 summers now and have only replaced the rudder servo......It's one of my favorite "go to's" when not flying a 30% gasser..........
