i might be able to help you out here, if you downloaded the quick install version it should have been zipped and there should have been a file lib/usb/win 32 something like that after you install the ops, go to my computer c: program files/ cvs camera file/ read me/ it tells you how to create the .inf file you need to create on your computer. if you follow those instructions, carefully, it took me a few tries, i am no computer genius, once you succesfully create the .inf you will be all set, the program will tell you that youve created it succesfully. i know these arent exactly step by step foolproof instructions, but this is the way i did mine!

download CVS Cam Quickinstall from here: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=145193&package_id=163302&release_id=360648

Installing the CVS/Pure Digital camcorder: Credits: CVS CAMCORDER QUICKINSTALLER README:
------------------------------------------
1. Attain a CVS camcorder. (You can find them on sale sometimes with a CVS card for a $5-10 discount.)

2. Peel off the sticker that says you can't connect the camcorder to a computer (it's lying.) Ohh lookie, a plug!

3. Make your self a cable. A great guide to doing this is at http://vickers.homedns.org/PV2mods.htm

4. Install the CVS Camcorder Quickstart program. This copies over Ops, the Libusb filter installer, and a pre-made driver driver for the camcorder.

5. After the CVS Camcorder Quickinstall gets done, it will launch the LibUSB filter installer. Keep clicking next until it goes away.

5. Plug in the camera and wait for the PC to identify it. But don’t look for drivers yet!

6. Now continue installing the device (Saturn) using the inf file at C:\Program Files\Camcorder Quickinstall 2.13\libusb-win32-device-bin-0.1.10.1\bin\ and pointing to libUSB0.dll if needed.

Using Ops to download videos:
(this is for camcorders with a 3.40 version firmware)
---------------------------------
1. Start Ops. it should be in the start menu under CVS Camcorder Quickinstall.

2. When you have OPS going, click "open camcorder", it should say the "found camcorder" and "connected to camcorder". click "unlock camcorder" it'll make a key for the camcorder and should unlock it. once the camcorder is unlocked, click "download all movies", point Ops to the directory you want your videos in and hit "save".

3. Congrats, you just got the videos off your camcorder! now you can either click "format storage" to clear out the camcorder's memory, play around with the more advanced features of Ops (at your own risk!), or click "close camcorder" and you're clear to unplug the camcorder.

Has anyone tried to "detatch" the video lense area so it can be fitted remotely?? With that "plank" sticking out from something seems like it would be a little draggy. It would be great if the video lense part could be remotely placed and the board be internally installed.

A few of us kicked this one around a page or two ago. Unfortunately, even though we know what the connectors are from another site...

Molex part numbers (22-pin configuration):
52465-2291
53307-2291

...none of us can seem to find them in any reasonable quantity. My local supplier through work wanted me to buy a few thousand... Anyone out there got any leads???

What a great thread, sirrom!

OK, I've got the hacked/mod'd CVC, downloaded the OPS software, installed Saturn (the CVC) and peeled off video files, etc., etc. I pulled down the XviD codec stuff and "installed" it also. The problem I'm facing now is WinMediaPlayer doesn't like the format (MPEG-4?) associated with the .avi file extension. How do I get WMP to find/plug in the XviD codec?

Thanks for any clues.

Mike

What MS Windows are you running?

Do a quick check for me, go to <control panel> <add or remove programs> and see if DivX and DivX Player is in there and report back.

One more question, what is the rev version of your WinMediaPlayer?. You can find this by clicking <helP> <about> from the WinMediaPlayer screen.

Hi, Ben. I should have anticipated that ques.: WMP Ver. 10.

But now this ... After noodling around a bit, I discovered that the original "file" I peeled off the camera (that wouldn't view) had a size of 0 bytes; I'm thinking operator error. (doh) So, I grabbed the camera and terrorized some family members for a few minutes and downloaded a substantial video file using the Ops application. Cha-ching ... all works well now. In fact, all my PC's video "viewers" (i.e., WMP, DivX, and RealPlayer) play the file without any issues. There must be some sort of magic that connects those apps with the XviD codec?

Thanks for the help, Ben.

Mike

Hello everybody,

I hacked some more CVS cams and I now have four installed in Pin Cushion and another one on my KingCat. Last weekend, Joe Rafalowski, Mike Pascoe, Rusty Bardin and I had a bunch of fun with some more formation flying with the CAMs at the Pensacola event.

Take a look at the new Pensacola Pin Cushion video.

Also, don't forget the other video: Pin Cushion Goes To Lake Wales.

These videos are now available from a link on the left side of the Georgia Jets website's home page as well.

FYI,

Gordon

Gordon, I saw your Georgia jets vid link on the camera hacking site a few days ago. Very nice work.

What video editing software are you using? I know it simplistic, but I was playing with XP movie maker last night and noticed the option to make a mirror image of the entire clip. That opens the door to placing a mirror at 45 degrees in front of the lens and mounting it on its back for a better aerodynamic configuration...

Next, has anyone done in flight vids at 640x480? I assume since the camera can be hacked to run 40 min at 320x240, it should be capable of 10 min at 640x480 right? I'm testing mine at 576 x 432 and it seems pretty solid so far.

Matt, on the connectors, I agree its just the 1st stage in what's likely to be a difficult process min making that cable. I'd hoped to use a pair of 11-conductor ribbon cables soldered to the connectors, knowing its a bit of a hack solution. Soldering on that scale will be a pain in the A$$, but one hurdle at a time....

Kelly

Ben,

Glad that you liked the video... Thanks!!!

Kelly,

I have been using Roxio's Videowave 7. However, I have had stability issues with Videowave 7 and I haven't been able to determine if it is just buggy or if it is related to the fact that I had an earlier (3 years old) version of Roxio's Movie Creator on my computer when I initially installed Videowave 7. In any event, it has been more stable since I uninstalled the old Movie Creator software and reinstalled Videowave, however, it still has some stability issues. I am thinking about changing to either Adobe Premier Pro or upgrading to Roxio's Easy Creator 8.

We have been using a mirror on the externally mounted cams for some time. It works great and I have been flipping the mirror image back to its correct orientation with Videowave. I fooled around with XP Movie Maker and it is probably a good place to start but I didn't much like it.

Sorry, but your math was off by a factor of 2 as far as the recording time for the 640X480 video setting. If you go to 640X480 resolution then your movie length will be reduced by a factor of 4. That will result in a maximum video length of 5 minutes. That is, 640X480 pixels requires four times the storage as 320X240 pixels. BTW, I have found that I need a minimum of 15 minutes of recording time from start to finish.

FYI,

Gordon

I use Pinnacle Studio for movie editing and it works great.

BTW guys, if you want to get a cams, get it now because the newer version than is not hackable “FW-VERSION: 33.04, PCB VER B1) is now replacing the hackable ones.

I just purchased a few and found out yesterday that they are the newer versions. I will be heading back to CVS today to return them and drive to the neighboring town to see if I could procure some of the versions that could be hacked.

Regards

Ben

Gordon, the reason I mentioned it was there appears to be a way to get as much as 40 min out of the camera at 320x280. Dividing by 4 would logically say that around 10 min is possible at 640x480. I think I read that somewhere on the camera hacking website.

For software, I've got a choice of Adobe, XP movie maker, and Pinnacle Studio 8. I've played around with Studio 8 and found it to be pretty buggy too.

With regards to camera versions, I believe the tell tail sign is by looking at the lens. Looking inside the chrome painted knobby thing around the lens, if you can see white plastic boarder around the lens it looks like its a 3.4, 3.62, or 3.7. If you only see black inside the chrome painted donut, its the new lens and therefore a 33.04. As a side note, the new lens tends to reflect red, while the old one appears to be blue.

Hi Kelly,

You are correct that some folks have reported being able to extend the recording time quite a bit. The problem is that I just don't know what a realistic recording limit should be. My understanding may not be completely correct however I have not seen anybody quote an exact time greater than 20 minutes (@ 320X280) that you will be guaranteed to always record with the camera 100% of the time. That is, the recording time is also dependent on what is being recorded and the 20 minute CVS limit appears to be a conservative time limit that should be ok 99.9999% of the time regardless of the subject matter being recorded. I was basing my previous post on the 20 minute CVS limit. It would be interesting to stretch that out with higher resolution recording for the in-flight images as you have suggested just to see what a conservative recording limit would really be for the in-flight subject matter. That's something else that we can fiddle with.

I have worked a bit with Easy Creator 8 which includes Videowave 7.5. 7.5 appears to have some UI improvements over 7.0 but I don't know if the stability has improved. Videowave 7.0 is quite stable until you start adding in alot of special effects (rotations, mirrors, contrast, replay speed adjustments, etc.) at which time things start getting weird especially when transitions (slow dissolves, etc.) are added on top. Stability also seems to decrease as the number of clips in a production increases when special effects and transistions are liberally employed. I had to mount the rear camera upside down in Pin Cushion due to space constraints and the KingCat cam uses a mirror so I use the rotation and mirror effects alot. As a result, these stability issues have been causing me quite a bit of frustration. I have also expermented some with Adobe Premier 6.5 which I liked alot and which appears to be rock solid stable. However, Premier 6.5 apparantly would not edit AVI files directly and you need to convert everything into DV files which I considered to be a royal pain in the ass. Adobe is now selling Premier Pro and I don't know if this is still an issue or not.

The arrival of the recent 33.04 version CVS cam firmware has definitely put a hitch in our get along. Hopefully, somebody smarter than me will be able to unlock the 33.04 cams. I know that some folks are working on it, however, I don't know how promising the outlook is.

FYI,

Gordon

Ok, what FW version is your cam?. (Verify by doing nerve pinch hold the record + delete key down, press on/off button and keep holding the previous two buttons down until the cam initializes)

I have more questions to follow.

I just PM’d my home # to you and you can call me if you want me to help you.

BTW, did you use the quick installer and where did you download it from?

If you want to reinstall the whole software, make sure you also have LibUSB_WIN32 uninstalled from the add or remove program by the way of control panel

Good luck
