Tail wheel retract door question

RE: Tail wheel retract door question
You will need a place on the strut itself to mount some ball-links. I would solder a small brass plate to the wire. I haven't done the geometry on your tailwheel movement, so I can't say for sure. For the doors I used an aileron linkage ball link with the hole elongated just a bit. The pictures show the rod and the installation. It works extremely smooth.

I have two questions how would you hinge these tail gear doors and what mechanism would you incorporate to open and close them -[sm=confused.gif]

Use this piano hinges. Hold with tape and epoxy in place. Once it sets you can add #0 screws availble from Nelson as well.
The spring is the fastest method of actuating small doors you are going to find.

Dion,
Do you have a better picture of your set-up? It looks like a great design but I can't quite tell what the angles and set-up are.
Thanks, Jim

Great idea on the piano hinges, that would work great.
Jim, No I don't have other pictures that show it any better, sorry.

RE: Tail wheel retract door question
Dion,
If you could tell me what plane and retract is in the picture and the direction it is facing that would be enough. I'm just having a problem orientating myself with the picture.[]
On my p-51 I have a set-up that took a lot of patience. By the way the piano wire hinges work great. Anyway, I glued a couple of plywood bump outs on the inside of the door and drilled a hole in them. When the gear extends it hit the bump outs and opens the doors. Make sure your hinges are stiff and the doors stay open. Then I looped of all things kite string underneath the control horn of the gear on both sides and tied off on the hole in the bump out. The loop has to be the right length so that it pulls the doors closed without catching on the retracting gear or not closing all the way. It works, but not necessarily a recommended method.

Piano hinges well here they are..
will see if I'm still smiling when I attach them to the fuselage using Devcon 5 minute.I'm afraid if I oil the hinge it self that the thing will be more difficult to properly adhere in place.always an issue for ME when I install hinges

Thanks for the infro. will have to join and check it out.
I have the Nelson hinges installed on mine now having to shim a bit as the Nelson piano wire hinge is basically straight
I'm not too pleased with how it looks thus far and the 'total travel to the fully open position is limited!! there must be a different hinge better suited for this gear door install???????????[]

RE: Tail wheel retract door question
the Nelson piano hinge is overkill....I'll post a pic of my P-47 doors later tonight.....u need to "recess" the hinge into the fuselage about 1/16" to get the doors to clear when they open (getting the correct geometry)....pic will follow in a few minutes....and yes, the hingeline is not completely straight in the Thunderbolt tailwheel doors, causing an issue with using a long 1 peice hinge.....standby for pics.....heading down to "man-land" with the camera.....

RE: Tail wheel retract door question
On my p-51 I used two small piano hinges on each door and not one full length hinge. Second, I installed the hinge with the pin on the outside of the plane and not the inside. I made a small notch the length of the hinge in the fuselage and the door. When the door is closed you see only the center of the hinge but the doors fit flush against the fuselage. This also allows the door to open wider than 90 degrees. Jim

here are the pics....my hinge pin is recessed more than it needs to be....really only needs to be recessed the width of the hinge knuckle/pin....

the tail wheel is facing toward the nose and it is another Thunderbolt.

Well I installed the tail gear doors. A better method I saw however the degree of detail or lack of it seems to make this simple enough door hinge install worth while and all credit goes to those who posted . The Metal morphed P-38 else where here at RCU shows a superior install but what the hey-

Probably the best thing I got out of this install--so far---was the "rubber gear door stops ,"which I cut from a Auto Shock insulator and adhered it in place with CA+
Now to figure out the install using Dions "direct connect," for the doors I will get the necessary hardware ;so for now I attach the parts I fabricated to represent the 'Jugs' Oil cooler exhaust variable shutter followed by the Fixed deflector and the Exhaust waste gate (doesn't sound pretty..

The gear doors will need screws to ensure the hinges stay in place I do not trust the CA+ although they held while I trimmed the doors to close properly.
Since Flite Metal adheres so well-- and does not shrink-- I will 're-skin' and trim the Flite Metal flush with --O--over lap.
