what's the difference between an Graphite Upper Deck and a Graphite Radio Tray?

i believe its the same thing, just worded differently BUT I COULD BE WRONG, so just double check

heres a link to a seller from HONGKONG selling a graphite radio tray, maybe you can ask him if theres a difference, I BOUGHT MOST OF MY ALUM HOPUPS FROM THAT SELLER< GREAT GUY!!!

http://cgi.ebay.com/3Racing-Graphite-Radio-Tray-for-HPI-R40_W0QQitemZ5914799161QQcategoryZ19168QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

all your hop ups look good though!!! you should have a quick strong r40~!

yea you're correct. radio tray and upperdeck are teh same thing. you also have radio tray up there twice. dont get alum. pullyes either as tehy make it heavier.

the damper plates would be the same thing as the shock towers too. (the majority of the GPM stuff you have up there is a duplicate of the 3Racing, just worded differently and/or aluminum instead of carbonfiber)

burntt the steering upgrades is a vearing set to replace the plastic ones in the steering...The list does look good imo the alum would be more eye candy than anything else...but pick up a 2004 edition and u can easiliy knock off the serperate upgrades like the lw shafts the super chassi... and little bit more you should research about it...its on hpi japan just use google translator or something. i would suggest getting the graphite composite arms and hub carriers for the heck of it as well(a couple sets as they are quite brittle)

the difference between the tray thing might just be a different model from a different company... I suggest getting the HPI lw upper deck and all the HPI versions instead of the 3racing or gpm "look a likes" as they usually are a bit better. However 3racing and gpm sell a few other things hpi doesnt make so u can buy those too...which u have quite a few of them listed. If u havent thought so already get hara competition aluminum shocks they are supposed to be nice come in pairs so dont forget to buy two of them.

i dont think alum is "eye candy"

it serves a purpose....its ALOT stronger than plastic

ive used to wreck my rs4 and my plastic a-arms and bulkhead would break, I have alum bulkhead and a-arms and now i never had a problem with them again

plastic sometime flexes under pressure thats why its sometimes good to get alum, my rearbulk head onetime was coming apart for no reason at all, the seems were seperating, so I got rear alum bulkhead too, never had a problem again

i do think carbon fiber is the best...I dont know about that graphite composite stuff Ive never bought those pieces but I heard they are strong, I just went ahead and got alum a-arms, for $10 bucks its the best deal to me!!

alum arms and such is "eye candy" maybe not in the transmission, pulley and such but in arms and bulkheads it just adds weight. ive broken more alum parts then plastic and plastic is ALOT cheaper to replace. (unless you're gettin it for $10)

trust me it is...the only reason it is used is because of its looks and its strength before breaking and heat dissapation. I mean once u hit it good its not gunna go back(unless its the chassi maybe). Alum is also used because its easy and cheap to manufacture. Alum first and foremost has weight issues and that takes a big chunk of performance out. If other metals and alloys were easier to make alum wouldnt exsist in the higher end cars...Magnesium could be used(way lighter but still retains superior heat dissapation and very strong to), cf composite(which is already used) and many other materials such as telflon, ceramic, etc.

i see your point

but for me from my past experience I just dont like plastic parts, plus I get my alum parts cheap

so its NO big $ difference in the plastic or alum parts

i dont race so I dont care if my car weights a couple more oz. , i have a good engine and its geared low so that makes up for it, I just drive my car in a parking lot or streets

wow thats weird, to me the COMPLETE oppisite happened...all my plastic arms warped and the plastic bulk heads where the pins go completely split the seem and I NEVER wrecked it, just from stress

NEVER had that problem w/ alum, never bent alum or broke alum...btw have you ever weighed the alum pieces to compare the weight w/ plastic

I HAVE, NOT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE AT ALL, maybe 5-6 grms....no biggie, just get a more powerful engine and lower gearing to make up for it

some alum pieces are a little bit more heavier but NOT by much!!

theres NO big weight difference....only weight difference is in a few grams

NO BIG DEAL....if you want to race then every little bit helps, so the less weight you have the faster your car will go, then YEAH stick w/ plastic and if you cant drive good be prepared to buy more plastic pieces

but if you just drive for the fun in a parking lot of where ever go w/ alum

I want strength and durability in my car, my whole car is alum and carbon fiber, the ONLY plastic left on my car is the front gear box

plastic pieces over time will either warp or flex under pressure

IVE NEVER had to replace a alum piece yet, but back in the days I OFTEN had to replace plastic pieces for 1 reason or another

just MY .02

i weighed a stock plastic a-arm and it weight 8 gr. the alum one weight 11 gr.

so for the front weight difference between 2 plastic a-arms and 2 aluminum a-arms is the aluminum ones weight 6 gr. more

i have a 4.5mm chassis and its heavier than a stock because obviously its thicker that the stock but I guarantee you I wont have to replace that chassis due to bending or flexing!!!

my old chassis was bent just from driving my car NO WRECKS

so in the end its up to you, if you want a "bulletproof" car so to speak get alum and carbon fiber parts OR you can stick to plastic and youll be fine as long as you dont wreck BUT be advised OVER time plastic will change shapes just do to stress!

now obviously if you wreck your car into a curb or whatever plastic will break and the alum might bend...so theres NO guarantee you wont have to replace a alum part

I dont want you to think that alum is indistructable...but its STONGER than plastic

to each his / her own, I like alum and im sticking w/ those parts EYE candy or not

again just my .02

I don't see anything wrong with aluminum. A few more grams isn't going to hurt. Aluminum parts are more expensive, but less likely to be replaced. The only aluminum upgrades I am adding to my car are aluminum a-arms. Any other aluminum upgrades are not really beneficial... in my opinion.

If I can, I'll post the weight conversion my friend did for his R40. Too bad though the cost of the LW shafts (both), GH shock towers (both) LW 2speed, and the LW shaft could've gotten us both an MTX3 prospec. Regardless all you need is those upgrades I mentioned. Otherwise, just purchase the 2004 kit or wait for the new ones to come out. They'll be less than the Mugenkits and come fully upgraded. Don't let the idea of going lighter or to be the lightest is fully beneficial. The R40 box stock is great with it's weight and it handles on rails. It can also be VERY predictable and allows you to toss and turn the car the way you want it. Sadly I went all out with the LW stuff and did spend some $$ when honestly I didn't adjust the shocks to new positions on the towers. Basically I'd settle for the LW 2speed, shafts, and chassis. The Shock towers should be left for last especially if the car already handles great. However if you want to get to roar weight specs, expect to dish out some $$ for a bone stock R40. Regardless the weight doesn't stops it's assault on other brands of cars on the track.

I know this about the R40

BUT

the stock weight of a rs4 3 SS is 3.2lb (thanks to Josh222)

my RS4 3 SS is fully hop'd up, will ALL alum except the front gear box (which is plastic) and the upperdeck, front / rear shock towers and bumper support (which are carbon fiber)

I have front / rear cvds and I have the center transmission univeral joints..so those weight more than dog-bones BUT ARE 100X stronger

PLUS i have a 4.5mm chassis that weights more than the stock 2.5mm chassis and I also added a 1.5mm alum skidplate, and a hump pack battery so those things adds some weight too

I weighed it the other day and it weighed 3.6lbs. NOT A BIG DIFFERENCE AT ALL

now the way that people talk about alum on here you would think by adding alum that it would weight a ton

the best part in my opinion about alum is its SUPER STRONG and Ive NEVER had to replace a alum part yet

It depends on the eye candy. Some weigh more than others believe it or not. Infact the alloy options for the R40 weigh less than the stock plastic parts on the R40...and they are stronger too. Imagine that.
