YeeHaw!!!!

Took the little Caliente to the field today. I have finally gotten the little Zeus sorted (I think). The last few times I have flown it (in very different types of weather conditions), I have been able to dial it right in and let it sing.

After putting one flight on it, a flying buddy pointed to the parking lot where two of Shelby County's finest sat in their patrol cars. After just a little encouragement, one of the patrol cars was set up near the end of the runway. (yes, I stayed away from the safety zones )

I fueled her, started her up and away it went. The first pass was 88 mph in level flight. The next was 89, and the rest were 91 miles per hour. After each pass, he would anounce the speed over his loudspeaker.

After landing, I went over and verified the reading on the gun and shook the officers hand.

Now,,,,,,,, is it time to build a fully faired, clipped wing version just for speed runs..........??????

Matchless,

Shoulda had the officer write you a warning ticket! We all know them cops tell the truth! Nice going on the speed though. That's the fastest I've ever heard of for a 1/2a pylon plane. What prop you using? Got any idea what the Zeus is turning? How ya doin on those plans? I'm interested in how you did the fuse and tail etc. NICE GOING!!! Rgds, Jeff...

Had a couple of TeeDee ships a few years back that were sorta like a racer. I doubt they were anywhere near 90 mph but when you fly them in close they sure looked fast.

Your Caliente must look like a demon going by close up.

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

Nice thing about this forum- you can find people that appreciate what it took to do what you have done..... When I told my wife about this yesterday afternoon, I got the 'I'm bored' stare

Yes Bruce, it looks like a 'bat outta he!!' when it goes past. I have been flying Q500 for many years, and the feeling of speed is much higher on this plane even though it is slower than even a 424 Q500. Flies like it is on rails though.

Jeff, I am using APC 5.7x3 props cut down(I know, I have read the warning label) to 4.5x3's. With this, the airplane is launching at about 25,5k and definitely unloading in the air. Turning a slightly smaller prop and getting more r's does not net any more speed with this little motor....Sounds cool though
If you are still interested in the plans, I have finally put them on my website for download.

Toad, the wing is 162 sq in's at a 36" span. The airfoil is only 6% thick, which amounts to less than 3/8" thick at the root. When I drew the plans, I designed a 200sqin version I called the Habanero. Same body with a bigger wing.

the wing I fly is at 6% also, I seem to like that hte best, but we are limited to 200sq" I like your design. I think most folk hhere fly a bit thicker, and still go very fast, Leavitt is very fast, "wildman Leavitt" lol Zeus? what is that? never heard of it

I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but you need to try a 4 pitch prop!!! Cut one down to around 4.5x4 and you should get 100mph easy!!! My little Norvels scream on a 5x4, I may cut one of them down to 4.5x4, but I need a better plane to go that fast. Your Caliente looks SWEEEEETTT!!! I need to get over to Memphis and watch it goooooooo. Are you going to bring it to SMALL next year?

Congrats Jeremy,
How's the speed 400 pylon coming along? You know that hobby lobby has an ARF I saw it when I was in Nashville this weekend.
I put an 010. on that blue 1/2a pylon plane beleive it or not that thing moves with the 010.
I would like to build a 400 fun fly, profile ,any ideas on a rib ,span and cord, I want it to float when landing and at slow speeds.
Any experience with this? I thought I saw an 049 profile of yours or maybe it was Chris's.
Be well,
Brian Capo

2fast, I don't have a pitch gauge, but I think you are right. I believe the props I am running are closer to 4 pitch than three. All the math that I have done regarding this would tend to back up that idea.... I would like to have something going over 100 before small, but that is a pretty tall order!

Hey Brian, glad to see you are still lookin' in here! Also glad to hear the little pylon plane flies well on a teedee.010. It was a screamer with the .020. Have you tried to catch it on landing yet?
The plane in my avatar is a .25 size, but I have been kickin around the idea of building a .049 profile. I am gonna guess that it would be approximately the right size for a sp400 also. You interested in a joint project?

Jeremy,
I am interested in a joint project on this 049 or speed 400 profile.
When you get a chance check out hobby lobby ther is a p-51 and a texan profile speed 400 they look great maybe we could borrow a couple of ideas from that design.
Be well,
Brian
