Status: offline 		Thanks Dave.  That was a 1400W/6s setup with cheap HK fan/motor combo and 25 leftover batteries.  Not bad.  Video stabilzation makes it look pretty slow tpday, and it was about 25% slower than Sunday (now that it has all the bombs and missiles loaded onto it). 

Anyway, per the fly-it-till-it-smokes doctrine, the F16 will be upgraded with a 2400W/8s setup that is now on the way.  I'm guessing at 600W/lb, the missiles and bombs might just rip off in flight, thus solving the additional drag problem.    :  )

BTW, if I recall correctly, Bob said MikeZ has a 90mm twin to maiden; I'd like to see video of that beast...

Status: online 		I just took a look at the latest newsletter and especially the article that Bill wrote titled "Why do we continue to fly?" I thought that he had some good points and worth some additional discussion.

I was flying at an event in Ohio this past weekend and while there at one point the discussion turned to talking about the great variety of ARFs that are available, how good they are and how easy it is to get into the hobby and to quickly progress into what used to be considered more sophisticated "high end" models. It is not unusal to see a guy who just started flying last summer who this summer is flying a large giant scale airplane just a year later. Not long ago most modelers would progress more slowly. It was generally felt that these new developments are great and we prefer the way things are now to 'the old days", but like anything else there are trade offs.

It used to be harder to get into the hobby- you had to build your own plane and figure things out. Learning to build and make a plane fly right was a bigger part of the hobby. This probably weeded out some guys early on. Those that stuck with it were more likely to be longtime modelers.

My first few years were like this:
Yr 1- built and flew my .40 size trainer (from a kit), then built a .40 size mid wing more aerobatic plane
Yr 2- built a .60 size goldberg chipmunk then a 1.20 size Goldberg Sukhoi
Yr 3 -scratch built from plans my first big plane- a 98" span laser with my first gas engine
Yr 4- built another giant scale plane from a kit
Yr 5- scratch built another giant scale plane- a 98" staudacher - from my own plans
Yr 6- my first 100cc plane - built a Cap 232 from a Carden kit

So- I was six years in before I had a 100cc plane and I had to build every plane I owned up til then - sometimes from just plans or my own plans. Now - you see guys going from a trainer to a second ARF to a 100cc plane in their first year sometimes.

Today- the building part is a small part- for many it's just the price of getting in the air, not part of the enjoyment of the hobby. The guys that would have been weeded out by the learning curve / time investment to get a plane built in the old days make it to the field with a plane and learn to fly with a much smaller investment of time and effort. We may lose these guys but it's possible that without recent advanccements we may never have seen them anyway.

Things have definitely changed- for the better overall, I think. But the profile of the average modeler is definitly different thatn it was 10 or 20 years ago

Status: offline 		Dave, "back way when", many people I knew did not go above a 90 nitro for even year 3-5.
I think it was 4-5 years before I had a 1.20 size plane and I was flying 3-5 days a week back in the early 90's at the Dobbin Field.
I agree that it was much more difficult to "GO BIG" back then and only the most dedicated pilots/modelers did that.
Getting in the air is much easier now adays for sure. The "right of passage" has become a revolving door. For better or for worse.

Status: offline 		I have heard from several others at the field that they read and "enjoyed" the article...

I might add.. in year two... I was pretty much put in a position that I could not turn down... a 42cc engine on an Extra 330s for $500

I had been flying two trainers for most of year 1 until I lost the Goldberg Protege' I had a good low wing second plane coming (Pulse 60), but it did not arrive until after I had a Segull Models 60 sized Extra 300 assembled and ready for flight. The obvious occurred... I broke it in half on the maiden... I quickly repaired the damage and had good luck with it after the opening salvo. Oh, I forgot to mention my scurge period, a love hate relationship with a 60sized Piper Cub... I even managed to go wingtip over wingtip one day down the field with the Cub.

Alas an older club member wanted to sell the Extra 330 and he kept telling me that I was ready for it. Some success and I was king for a while, but I was ahead of the learning curve which did not bend but did break for me.

I did not follow all the good advice that was offered, but it was not entirely my fault either. Don't sell a plane to a guy that is clearly not ready for it. He is going to tell you that he will put it on the shelf and fly it when he is ready... that is usually two weeks. Just to keep the record straight... I tried very hard to turn down the deal... in fact I did several times.

FMS/Airfield P-47 foamie with electric retracts. I pulled the retracts and raked them foward for better stability on our gras runway.
Last flown 2 weeks ago.

Flies with a 4S 3300mAh pack. I can sell a pack with it if you don't have one.
$75 w/o Reciever, but if you fly spektrum, I can make a deal

I pulled some of the stickers off and put a slightly larger nose wheel and took the wheel pants off so it will work on the grass better.
Uses a 3S 2200mAh LiPo. I'll throw in a battery and a cheap charger with it.
It has flaps on it but that is not really even needed for it. If you want it more stable in the wind, I can set up and throw in a piezo gyro for the ailerons as well.

This is the only video I have of my plane flying. It was a keychain cam I had holding it in my teeth, so most the flight was edited out

I have the 700e kits just about ready and I thought I would share a couple of pictures.

First is the kit contents. The other two are instruction drawing that will be included in the kit.

The links are of the ball pin being lathe cut on a milling machine out of stainless steel... The parts
need to be hand finished and threaded but cutting the ball pin is cool to watch. Kind of hard to
wrap your head around programming a lathe cut on the mill. You have to turn your head sideways
a lot! LOL
