Now the Futaba Fasst manual specificaly states what position the antenna should be in for best reception. That is a good thing because it gives the end users a good point of reference.

I'm still curious why it would be used with the antenna sideways.........what is the logic ?

We've had one system that has been flakey with ground testing, I tried a different TX and it seemed to work better, at least the attenuated range check was back on our spec. Out on the tarmac doing full range checks I again found it was not acting in what we would consider a "normal" manner. The plane flew and there were no issues but I have now replaced the RX in an effort to get it back to what we see as "normal" performance. That is the only trouble I have seen at the office.

At homebase, when I set up the DvII we had noise from the ignition getting into the RX via the battery (an amplifier) and servos. We moved the battery and I changed all the control surface servos to digital. Apparently, digitals have additional filtering (?) to prevent feedback to the RX. She's been solid since.

The 2.4 is the best step towards a safe and happy flight yet, still we have to set up the plane properly and use our limited radio knowledge to insure the system performs properly.

Which direction is that ?

This is from the Futaba 7c Fasst Manual. They also have a very specific picture on the recommended position. See page18. http://manuals.hobbico.com/fut/7c-2_4ghz-manual.pdf

***********
Transmitter Antenna
1. The transmitter antenna is adjustable so please make sure that the antenna is never pointed directly
at the model when flying as this creates a weak signal for the receiver.
2. Keep the antenna perpendicular to the transmitter's face to create a better RF condition for the
receiver. Of course this depends on how you hold the transmitter, but in most cases, adjusting the
transmitter antenna so that it is perpendicular to the face will give the best results. Please adjust the
transmitter antenna to the way you hold the transmitter.
3. NEVER grip the antenna when flying as this degrades RF quality.

"Tanks" [)] This usually gives the best ground range. Once I get the 9Ch receiver up in the air I'll do some testing with the flight log and the TX antenna position. Hope to get the DvII out tonight !

This is so funny.
I thought the 2.4 was free of interference? All everyone talks about is how great they are. It looks like the mfg of all the 2.4 have a few bugs to work out.

We are not really talking about an interference issue. It is more of a discussion on getting the best range based on the antenna position. The antenna on the DX7 radio swivels and rotates, so you have the freedom to fly with it in several positions.

True. The technology is not flawless. There are some critical updates for certain receivers listed on horizon's site.

Now I am gradually learning about this stuff as well. From my understanding antenna theory and how the radio waves work is the same between 2.4 and 72 mhz. So while 2.4 is the latest and greatest, you still need to follow the basic rules of the road with regards to radio transmission. For example, you have to avoid "dead spots" by not pointing your antenna directly at the model.

I like 2.4, but I am not giving up my trusty 9c

as our buddy says: "it's all a process"

It was a nice evening at the field. I brought my new Albatros DIII out for some pictures. I've been documenting the build progress here:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=761155

Eventually, I plan to install a sound system in it once the newer version of this sound module is available:

There is no comparison between 72MHz and 2.4 GHz.

Good, that means I can stay on 72MHZ for a long time. I'm sure that someone will take pitty on me in 5-6 years and help me get a 2.4Ghz setup.

I am thinking of selling my Thunder Power 1010 Li-Po charger. It handles more cells than I will ever use. Let me know if you are interested. Sales for $199, will part with it to a club member or local for $120.
