Status: offline 		at least not here in Bowling Green, Kentucky. there isnt a local source for good nitro,,,,and there isnt a local source for klotz KL-100 oil. i did find a possible source for the nitro at 50.00 a gallon. locally i can get decent methanol for 2.20 a gallon but only in 55 gallon drums,,no less or pay more. and the klotz KL-100 oil,,,mail order only or drive to nashville which then at 2.88 per gallon of gas to get there,,just takes all the even close possible savings out. there really just isnt any way to make ones own fuel here and save anything.

Status: offline 		Don't feel cheated if you can't make your own fuel. Sometimes due to local availability of ingredients (or lack thereof) it is simply not not practical to do so. Where the ingredients are more easily obtained, the individual may have ample reason to make his own fuel, but except in unusual circumstances, cost savings isn't really a benefit of home-brewing.

Oil & Nitromethane are expensive, and the smaller the quantity you purchase...the more it costs per unit. This makes it tough to save anything on a small batch of fuel. Unless you're making rather large quantities, you simply don't enjoy the cost benefits that come with the economy of scale.

There are many good fuels on the market, and these are often sold at prices below which YOU could make them.

Buy a gallon of your favorite, and spend your time at the flying field instead.

Status: offline 		I love to make my own fuel. It can be cheap if you change your ways or can find a good supplier. I get Methanol in my supplied container for $3 per gallon and a gal of Cool power oil at Comet Karts is $18 and that will make 6 gallons of fuel. You could stop right there and have $6 a gallon fuel. Nitro is expensive in a 5 about $30 a gallon so If you limit it to 5% it would last along time. I live close to Indianapolis racing capital of the world ,Lots of supply but in large quanity for Drag racers. Teams buy 4 -55 gallon drums of nitro at a time. A top fueler uses 44 gallons per mile of fuel at a 85% nitro content mix they don't need single gallons

Status: offline 		Hello; I make my own 0% fuel, it comes out to about $5.85 a gallon. Unfortunately, I only have one or two engines that like that fuel, a Laser and a few Enya's. I haven't tried to add Nitro, it's unavailable here. I use Klotz techni-plate oil. I bought a case of it at a swap shop years ago for $25. Makes flying more "affordable", though I'm not doing it to save money.

If so, does 20% fuel = 80% methanol and 20% oil?

Status: offline 		VERY EASY Your in the UK so your metric. You just need a measuring cup and an extra fuel jug. Take .20 times whatever your final size would be and that is the oil content you put in first. The rest is methanol . I took a gallon jug and put 128 oz exact and marked the level on the jug . 20% oil gave me 25.6 oz which I measure and put in empty jug. I then fill to pre marked line and fill to the mark. The reason I mark the jug the first time is because of reports on some short fill premix fuels. You can also take a certain size container and fill with oil and call that 1 part and put 4 more container parts on top of that and that gives you 20% Make sure your final container has enough room for the 5 total parts..........

Status: offline 		Nitro - Obtain from VP Racing. They will ship you a 5 gal drum for about $38.00 a gal.

Methanol - Obtain from your local race track or motor sports park. About $2.50 a gal.

Lube - Obtain from Sig Mfg. They sell Klotz and Castor at resonable prices.

Nitro is used extensively in America because it's cheap over there. It gives a bit more power but it's not necessary. In England you should be able to get Castrol M castor oil or Castrol MSSR which is a synthetic gear oil but a lot of guys over there use it. For methanol, try your local Shell, BP, Caltex, Mobil fuel depots.

I have decided to try 'blending' some of my own.
I'm a beginner on glow fuel, comments please.
Going to run this in an OS 52 FS. Purchases will include 2 gal. Powermaster Power Blend 15%. (16.00 USD) but 900 miles away ; 1 qt .Klotz Kl-100 ($8.99 USD Tower); and 190 oz of industrial methanol (metanol 10 peso/ liter $.95 USD/33.8 oz) 5.62L (5.37USD)
Final product: Quanity: 478 oz.
Cost: $32+8.99+5.37= $46.36USD or $.10 USD /oz
Composition of blend
nitro 8.0%
oil 16.3%
methanol 75.6%
The engine is new and Powermaster 4Stroke fuels are either
10% 4-Cycle 15% Oil Synthetic Castor Blend or
15% 4-Cycle 15% Oil Synthetic Castor Blend
Fuel purchased:15% POWER BLEND 18% Oil Castor Synthetic Blend
5 more oz of oil will give 18% oil as OS "requires"
nitro 7.9%
oil 18.0%
methanol 74.1%

Status: offline 		I mix my own fuel and run 0% nitro. Measuring out correct amounts and partial containers of oil were something I wished to avoid. So I came up with the following formula and containers. Wal-mart had a two gallon refrigerator container shaped like a box. Equipped with a large 3" opening on top and a spigot on the side at the bottom for dispensing. I measured out an accurate 2 gallon mark on the container to start. Then I add 1 qt of Klotz supertechniplate and 1 pt of klotz benol. I rinse the oil containers with methanol and add this to the container. THis way I recover all the precious oil. Next I add a few drops of Armour All then add about half the methanol and mix. Then I add the rest of the methanol to the two meter mark and mix. The spigot makes it easy to dispense into fuel containers. I use a singe container of supertechniplate and a single container of benol, no measuring, very little mess and nothing to wipe off of clean up. Works out to 18.75% oil. With supertechniplates 20% castor, the mix is 10% synthetic and 8.75% castor. This is a very rich castor mix, Using regular techinplate in place of supertechniplate reduces castor to levels used in alot of sythetic blends and using only supertechniplate reduces castor content to the minimum I'd use and also reduces cost as a pt. of Benol is nearly the same price as qt. Supertechniplate.


If I need a little extra oil for say a break in I just add some by the containers oz marks on the side. Usually I'm adding only a couple ounces of castor for a break in. This container is the only one I have that is a partial.

I only run Fox engines and they work super on no nitro. I like this mix because it is easy to make, has a large amount of castor generates little waste or mess.
