Hi all:

It seems the Panther -mania is growing up.

I am passing the Panther Ziroli plans to a CAD program and then I will enlarge it with the Command Scale at 1/5 scale, so the WS will becomes to 2316 mm or 91.2".

Do you think if a P-120 will be enough? The 1/5 scale Airworld Panther fits a P-160 .

The Ziroli's Panther fits semisymmetrical airfoils, anyone knows the NACA number? Must I maintain this airfoils or change to full symmetrical?

Thanks in advance

BR

Jesus

Hi Jesus!

No worries, the P-120 will handle the big Panther with ease. Even the Airworld one flies good with the P-120. It is just the bit extra for airshows and competition. I fly a www.jetwelt.de Strikemaster with a P-120. It weights in at 19kg dry and takes off after 60m on a hard-strip.

Good luck with the Panther,

David

Hey Terry , I have searched also and all I could find were these black and white pics. Are you sure the world had color in it back then?

Hi David:

Thanks for your comments, I will fit the P-120. Nice your Strikemaster.

With a balsa and ply construction the estimated weigh may be in 15 Kg. or 33 pounds, + or -

Any sugestions about the airfoils?

Not yet involved in the cockpit

Terry,
try Dan gill, I think he had some color pics. I had a set of documentation pics but the cockpit was not shown. I plan on visiting the NAS Pensacola Naval Museum in late November and have been told that I can geet permission at that time to open the cockpit of one of the F9F's they have on display for some pics. I'll be happy to share them with you when I get them, but it may be a little while.

I only have one saved on my PC but have access to a bunch more in my Panther/Cougar reference book library. I can provide some book names if you are interested.

Do you have any that shows the rear of the seat and behind the seat under the canopy? That would be real helpful to me right now.

That would be great.

Tommy, I will be looking forward to the pictures when you get them, I don't have any of the rear either.

I several pictures of the F9F Cockpit. Color pictures of Korean Era cockpits are rare indeed. Most color pictures will be from restored aircraft. Most of the instrumentation was satin black, not truly flat, seats were gray with very few exceptions. The cockpits were very basic, with few bells and whistles as well as being sort of non-colorful. I'll see what I can dig up in my collection. Would these be for a F9F-2 or a -5? I also have detailed drawings of the ejection seats and instrumentation. I'll have some pictures of the new Details 4 Scale F9F-5 cockpit that I'll post this weekend. It was made using the references I have here. By the way, Tommy, you won't need the pics of behind the seat, all the detail you need is already there; right down to the cabin pressure reg., wiring and hoses.... lol...

Terry, you may want to check out the movie, Bridges at TOKO RI. Great aerial shots and info on the F9F. Not a bad flick either. Stars Van Johnson and Mickey Roonie. Korean war era film. Should have just about everything you need to see?

Terry, I'll see what's in my books and scan any appropriate pics tomorrow. There's a little bit of the rear cockpit shown in BATR, here's a couple screenshot teaser pics...

O.K, O.K. I'll beguin the construction by the cockpit, all the information is wellcome.

Tommy, if you visit de NAS Pensacola Naval Museum in late November, can you take some close up pics of the nose wheel, please?
The photo pack that I purchased from Scale Model Research is of poor quality. Thanks in advance.

BTW I insist, ANY SUGESTIONS ABOUT THE AIRFOILS? I'd apreciate the root and tip airfoils ccordinates.

Jesus,

The airfoils of the Panther are:
Root: NACA 64A014
Tip: NACA 64A012

The books I managed to find on the Panther were:

  • Detail & Scale Series
  • Famous Airplanes of the World - Grumman F9F Panther/COUGAR (BUNRINDO)
  • IN ACTION

Here is the tip airfoil drawing:
http://www.ae.uiuc.edu/m-selig/ads/afplots/n64012a.gif

Hope this helps

Jesus,
I have a couple of pictures from Scale/Detail and others which show the nose gear. But I will be happy to take lots more when I get down there. One of the best nose wheel assemblies on a Panther I have ever seen in person was done by Henry Nyguen, HVN Models, for Sung. It was fantastic, of course all of Henry's work is that way. HIs was a modified Airworld nosegear and it looked really awesome with the painting technique that Henry used. Might want to try and contact him as well if you want more ideas.

Hi Reuben, thanks a lot for your information. Now the question is: full size airfoils or Ziroli airfoils? What is your opinium?

Tommy, I'll try to contact with Henry. I intend to fabricate my owns gears. I put some pics from the gear I made some months ago from stock bar aluminum 7075 T-5 150HB. It is possible you find some similarity with a famous brand

Cooper, WD40, thanks a lot for your information

BTW I have traced the outlies for the wing and stab, I'm working in the fuselage. I intend to modify the nose "a lo Airworld" to get best access to the electronics bay.
