Not really me actually but rather the members of my club need to build RC cars. I am the president of my school's engineering club and the next project I am trying to set up is the building of electric powered RC cars (we are not allowed to use fuel). Several cars actually, made by teams of 4 people and raced on a snowy offroad track.

But there are problems, I know nothing about RC cars. Also we have no money, so everything must be salvage, or very cheap. I must provide them with the materials and the complete power train.

Our original plan was to locate large electric motors and batteries. Then we would look for cheap RC cars from moving sales and yank the Receiver, Transmitter, and steering motors from them. Then we would provide them with wood, metal, screws, rubber bands, and a whole heap of other parts to make their cars out of.

My officers and I have located electric motors for our cars in the form of car starter motors, (five bucks apiece) These were a bit larger than we expected. Also it seems we need car batteries to power them. Car batteries seem out of our price range. Also we have failed to locate cheap RC cars to yank the componets from. The entire project seems a whole lot more difficult than we thought.

Any thoughts on where we could get our parts? Any tips on building these cars??

Windshield wiper motors might do, but automatic window motors might be better as you would need less juice to run them. As for power, lantern batteries should work.

You might look to a local hobby shop for old radio gear. They might donate the really old and crusty stuff...
