I've heard that some people add 5-10% gasoline to glow fuel to add a bit of duration and power. Has anyone tried this? It doesen't make much sense to me, but I was curious if anyone knew about this?

I was under impression that gasoline and methanol won't mix like that without a catalyst. It really don't make sense to me either as it may have less power/?

Adding smallish amounts was apparently routine for C/L team racing to get extra range between pit stops. There's a drop in HP which gives a little lower air speed but this was more than made up for by less stops. The advantage for sport flying is cheaper fuel and it uses less of it for the same flying time. The disadvantage is it's far more flammable so treat it more like you would for straight petrol.

Hmm, a little more range and little less hp, I can go along with that. Must be that they got the gas to mix ok.

So what's the appropriate % of gasoline (petrol) to add to a regular nitro-methanol mix?

Thanks

And what would you use for fuel lines in this case? Or is silicone still ok when the percentage of gasoline stays low enough?

If it was me, I'd start with about 5% and see how it went. If it was fine I'd go up to 7 1/2% then 10% and so on. There'd be a limit somewhere and it'd probably be when you had to start messing with plugs, bad idle or signs of overheating.

I don't know if a small amount of petrol would cause silicone tubing to soften and swell but you could always use Tygon like they do with diesels.

I had some premixed gas and oil for a gasser (45:1) to which I added about an equal amount of industrial alcohol (methanol). Mix is in a glass jar and it appears to have mixed. No laying. There are a number of people mixing and using methanol and gas in gas engines. Check out Engine Conversions.

This will make glow engines easier to start in cold weather. I never actually used a gas and methanol mix but I keep a small bottle of cigarette lighter fluid, essentially the same stuff as Coleman lantern fuel, in my flight box. A few drops of this in the engine's intake and it lights right up even when the temperatures are near freezing.
Before I discovered this trick, I was almost tempted to resort to owning an electric starter for cold weather.
