There was a point when MAAC had the authority to issue licences for flying model aircraft! It wasn't taken away from us, we just gave it up.

Regarding Transport Canada, ACC hired a consultant (an ex-modeller and ex Transport Canada employee) who sat in on appropriate meetings concerning aerosport. He kept us advised of relevant issues avoiding the UAV definition including model aircraft being one.

At the last Toronto AGM, Transport Canada sent a spokesman to address the meeting and discuss the relationship with MAAC. It is my understanding that Transport Canada was the body that initiated the contact with MAAC that resulted in the meeting in Ottawa, to which the Aero Club of Canada President was also invited. Transport Canada provided the minutes of the meeting, not MAAC.

....thank the good lord for that. Let's hope it doesn't come to licencing toy-airplanes. It would be about as effective as the Feds gun registry.

As far as TC's recent interest, they had received complaints about model aircraft at a couple of events. My understanding was that Bransfield caught wind of the TC's complaint investigation and re-introduced them to MAAC. TC's current admin didn't even know we existed. The ACC was apparenting paying their ex-modeller too much or the line between the tin cans had been severed along the way because MAAC & TC's relationship was non-existant. It would be a mistake to depend on the ACC to "keep us informed" instead of dealing direct.

If I remember correctly we also had to have a General Radio Service (GRS - CB to you Good Ol' Boys) license each year for our transmitter at one time as well. I know we did if you had a "CB" radio however that stopped one year when the gov't decided to "simplify" regulation. I knew a DOT inspector at that time and he told me simplification was just an excuse. The fact was that "CB" radios were becoming so cheap that anyone who wanted one had them and most did not bother to get a license. At $15 bucks for a license DOT could simply not afford to track down offenders and so they simply gave up.

"Licensing" anything, while seen as most as a money grab, is usually intended to regulate something. I would suggest that if the messages being put forward on these sites (by modellers) is any indication (pushing for mandatory "wings" programs, large model regulations, etc, etc, etc) you may very well see a return to licenses for miniature aircraft. If that happens I would prefer it be through MAAC and not TC.

Ahhh the good old days. I remember as a teenager looking fondly at a Heath-kit catalog at their transmitter kit as being the only way I could get into R/C and even that was out of reach for me. Later when I was in the reserves I was on exercise in the states for a week and used my pay (nearly all of it - boy was my wife not happy) to buy one of the NEW 4 channel Futaba proportional transmitters on 27 Mhz which came with 3 correct and one reverse sero (these were all significant selling points of the day). Having more than one transmitter was unheard of and the hobby stores in our area did not stock to many transmitters as they were so expensive and did not move that regularly.

Maybe that's why I find 75 bucks for MAAC a bargain

I have to agree with Marc, I has some dealings with DOT around that time, MAAC president Wayne Bransfeld thorough his personal relationships with the DOT staff restablished MAAC's relationship with MAAC.

For those interested Wayne is moving to BC and I dont think his Email is on line right now.
I dont think his health is the best currently but he is coming east for the MAAC exec meeting the end of next week so we shall see.
Once he is back on line I will post his address here and Im sure he would be tickled to hear from any old friends.
We share a love of bluegrass and if you have heard of his skills on banjo and guitar I can assure you he can still pick and grin with the best!

Wayne Bransfield and I have agreed, disagreed, and agreed to disagree. We have shared drinks, shared meals and had major confrontations. Regardless, he is one hell of a man. He has battled cancer for years, he is a great musician, he loves modelling and MAAC. He drives Cadillacs and wears a Stetson. My models could fit in the shade of the wings of the things he flies. He is opinionated, strong willed, argumentative and dedicated to what he believes. He has left a legacy in MAAC that will last a long time with his work with Transport Canada and RABC. He stepped down as President of MAAC and then chose to give total support to his successor and the rest of the Executive.
What more could you ask of a modeller?
This man has earned my respect!

Kevin, Richard:

Thanks. I'm please he stuck around and gave you the opportunity to get to know him as I have. I expect there will be only one reason that he would not keep his word to be there if he gave it. It's too bad the exec meeting isn't in Ottawa next week, I would have enjoyed the opportunity to visit with him again.

....I'd appreciate his current email when available.

Its about politics and bedfellows I guess, but I suspect Wayne would say the last 18 months as PP have been enjoyable and satisfying for him too. There has been a rare solidarity and team approach to this mismatched bunch on the exec and we are pleased with the progress made.,and most of the board is too I think.
Big changes coming on the board and exec next March but the incoming new Directors are a really diverse and promising bunch in the main, from Atlantic,Ontario,Alberta and BC,and with a ratio of two to one vet to new director it should be a very healthy meeting of minds....................found out too one of the new dudes drinks 151 proof rum.(the bottle has an incendiary warning on it)..........a man after my own heart!
