A friend and I were comparing notes and I was recalling the days of hand proping U-control engines that were hell bent on whacking anyone's finger that was brave enough to get in the prop arc.

That led me to wondering who might have been the first to take an old car heater motor and a battery and make a starter?

Does anyone have recollections of the first time they saw someone use a starter, and how many years ago was it that you remember seeing the first one?

Yeah, there was nothing more eye opening on a cold day than having an old KB Torpedo green head with a Topflite Nylon prop whack your finger so hard that it was sore for a week, of course that was after you stopped the bleeding...........

Back in the 50's our first starter was against a veco spinner on a B, C and D Proto speed planes. This was a bicylce turned upside down and the spinner placed against the rear tire. Once the engines were broke in, a hot glove and hand starting was used. Me personally I never used and electric start until about 1986.

Status: offline 		I remember seeing a speed plane being started about 1955 with a converted war surplus inertia starter.
