Hi,

I just bought a jamminX1cr pro buggy and I'm the process of getting an engine for it. I just need to know if anyone had any experience with the Ofna Hyper 21 8 ports race engine. I know most of you will suggest to go with an OS engine and I will agree that based on my experience but for now, the hit on the wallet would be a bit too harsh.

So please, comments on the hyper 21 is really what I'm looking for.

Thanks

The engine is a great engine. It will take alot to break it in due to the tight(very very tight) tolerance of the motor. But its well worth it. I've run pullstart 8 ports for a long time now and they have always held up very well. Now i have the race 8port in my mayhem and it moves. Take ur time tho breakin it in. Follow there break-in instructions also. It will take about a gallon or more before its fully broken in and holds a nice tune but it will be worth the time and effort. Once its broken in you will see how it holds a nice tune and has excellent power. U will have no problems running with the top motors.

Enjoy

The OS engine that most people acutally recommend on this forum, is the OS RG. It is about 40-50 dollars CHEAPER than a Hyper 8 port race motor. I would say go with the RG or a Sportwerks .26 (still cheaper than the Hyper 8 Port) if your track allows higher displacement engines.

Thanks guys,

That's the kind of info I was looking for. kx250ryder, the RG is certainly a great engine but the only thing I am not too fond of is the pullstart. I love pullstart for my MT2 with my CV-R but I just want this buggy to have something mid range until I ultimatly upgrade it to a OS .21 VRZ. when I'll do so, I have a little secret project for the Hyper 21... muhahahaha, muhahahaha

May I ask is any of you tried to put a OS carb on this engine ?

when I started having tuning problems with my 8 port I put the os carb on, seemed to work but the motor IMO is extremely finicky and even slight ambient temp changes seemed to have a drastic effect on the mill's performance. To the extent of: lean one lap and rich the next. New carb so it wasnt the o-rings either.
I got to the point of giving up completly on Hyper engines. Not trying to discourge you but the group I race with had pretty much the same troubles with their hyper mills we have all gone to other engines to use for racing.

Gulp.

So you're problably the guy that posted that tip in another post I read earlier. So I guess the carb trick didn't last, bummer, I tought this would be a reasonnable alternative to the vrz I'm freaking on these days. I'll probably go with the .21 OS vrz then. It's gonna bleed me to death but I guess I wont regret in the long run.

Thanks

You can get the OS RG without a pullstart and then it is even cheaper - 110$ at Tower.

might have been Montrealer, I just gave up on it, tired of fighting the thing. I have truely never seen a more finicky mill.
Now, given that there are tons of variables in regards nitro I would say then opinions may differ but in my case;

same fuel used+average ambient temps outside+ same conditions and driving place=different engine action with each lap=frustration to the point of almost throwing it in the woods, lol

I have kept it, and might one day send to back to ofna for a rebuild (think its like 50$ plus shipping) but it is so far down on my list I can't imagine that happening anytime soon.

Oh on a side note, this engine was my 2nd hyper, also had an 8 port race that did the same thing. Both mills had less then 1 1/2 gallon through them with normal (230-260 temps).

p.p.s. if you really wish to give the hyper a try and you starting to have some tuning issues. Running then hot (275+) seems to be an opinion if you want a somewhat more consistant running engine. Won't work long though IMO

Yeah thanks,

I had a stock Nitro Mt2 equiped with a nitro star .18 and I could get the thing to idle properly even after countless hours of tuning and fooking around with the needles. Since I put in this .18CV-R, never had a problem. The thing just won't stop. Based on my very limited experience with nitro engines, i think the extra 150CDN $ will be well invested.

As my grandma always said, "you buy cheap, you buy twice" going the hyper 21 way might be an economy I may regret next year when the season returns. I can just see myself after 4 months of snow just begging for a dry track and when it finally shows up, I start fighting an engine that gives me grief. Nah... I'm gonna be broke for a couple of weeks but when spring comes back, I won't have a penny to waist on tweaking an engine that just won't run properly.

The only thing I don't like about the OS .21 VZ-B V-Spec, set aside the price, is the shape and color of the cooling head, looks like an inverse blue spruce...

If you guys can't tune this engine, then you're personally limited by your skills. Take note: It is only finicky about glow plug and fuel choice. If you get the right glow plug and fuel, then it's a snap to tune. And it's not that particular about fuel/plug. Just don't use too hot of a plug, and fuel with 12-14% oil. Nothing less than 10%. Fuels like Wildcat with 18% oil will cause it to be a little finicky. You can even get away with 16%. Try to use a Synthetic/castor racing blend. A super high synthetic content will limit the film strength and build up, which helps to protect your engine. With too little synthetic, you will sacrifice some efficiency, and lubrication. Ron Paris quoted:"the key to quality fuel is top grade castor." This spites today's synthetic oil trend. The film build up also will help preserve compression.

I had a Hyper 8 port race -- and no longer have it ---and am very happy about that. As for not being able to tune, well why should I have to spend time and money to find the perfect match on fuel and glow plugs and then constantly have to tune the engine. In my opinion an engine should hold its tune and only take a minimal amount of tweaking each time you start it up due to weather conditions.

Go to the Ofna web site and on the right side of that site is a list of thier on-line areas and one of them is for engines. Look for the hyper enging section and start reading about the 8 port race. Everyone has trouble with it eventually (or they did the last time I was there) and all anyone can say is, well it runs great you just have to find the sweet spot. I for one will never own another hyper engine.

The OS RG is a great engine and you will have a blast with it. It runs well, holds a tune and is not a pain in the butt everytime you take it out to the track. The Mach .26 (from Horizon Hobby) is also a great engine and as stated above does not cost a bundle. Both of these engines are used at our local tracks with great success.

Well guys,

It's now too late for me to change my mind. I have a spanking new OS .21 VZ-B in my hands that I picked up at the LHS. Yeah that's right, I'm sitting in my office playing around with this engine like a d u m b a s s as I write this. This engine is really sexy, I'm sure it'll peel the thread off my tires when I install it. Now, if the rest of my buggy would please come in, I'd be a happy man.

Thanks for all the info guys, together we know everything.

I know your not really going to like me saying this but you might want to pick up a set of these just incase http://www.bocabearings.com/main1.aspx?p=product&id=4191&n=*ENK-148RSHS
My front bearing in my Vspec went a little after 2 gallons, Looked down at the chassis and seen a huge puddle of fule and oil pulled the flywheel and turned the shaft and the bearings defanatly had some crunch to em.I replaced them with the bearings I linked to and everythings going good now.

BTW Its an awsome engine makes all the bottom end I'LL ever need and revs quite high just keep an eye on them bearings.

Maybe you should change out the bearings before you run it - it may be easier now???

Thanks,

Any, if not all OS engines I've seen or owned were awesome. It's like they are made to work in any conditions with minimal tuning or atmospheric adjustments. Just plain no fuss old simple reliable mecanic. It's like the AK-47 of engines.

Thanks for the bearings tip. I'll look out for this and keep a good eye on this part.

Have fun My engine was os easy to tune all it took from going from the prairies of alberta to the mountains in BC was a 1/4 turn leaner on the hsn.The only time it would ever flame would be when I had a bad clutch bearing or when my flywheel pin came out(wich now that I think about it probably cuased the bearing issue I had.

Hmmmm. Most are tunning questions if you ask me. Not that many complaints considereing this is where people go to get "help," with an OFNA product.
