I need to know how the HOB T-6 flys when powered with a .15 engine. A bunch of guys up here in the north are starting a pylon race group geared at getting people started in racing with a minimal investment. You can buy the HOB T-6 and a .15 sized engine for around $100. At that cost, anyone can fly. An added benefit is with the lower power, the speed and energy will be reduced which should make the racing safer. I want to know how this thing will fly, or if it will fly, before I buy the engine. Any feedback would be helpful.

We have a HOB / Hobby People ARF series in So Calif. The rules are posted on the SGVRCL web site. We use K&B 20 or OS bushing 25s, any fuel and APC 8 x 5 props with a as flown, not pinch up, rpm limit of 16K. Works well. Before my time they used 15s and everyone spent a ton of time or money modifying the engines. So now the engines have to be stock. They fly OK considering the design. The biggest problem we have is the time it takes to run heats. We check the winners RPM and weight after every heat. The class we are really pushing is Slo-Quickie

The website is http://sgvrcl.org/

Definately use the 25 size, I got the plane online for $30. (currently $39.) and an OS 25LA for $54. With some legal modifications to the engine it will tach over 16,000 on a warm day with the 8x5 prop, and it's a lot of fun to fly.

It's squirrely on the ground and tends to wobble in the turns and it'll tip stall if you take off too soon but, It's still a pisser to fly and race. I've built three and and have one arf, definatley build one it'll be lighter and stronger. You can use standard size servos but micros will make it faster.

The bottom line is if you stay within the rules it comes down to pilot skill and is pretty cheap.

Next season there is a bounty on Barry!

Basinbum is right! Forget about the 15'S and use 25's. I've built a bunch of these (20) and they fly pretty good (for what they are). If you keep them under 2 1/2 # their tendancies to snap pretty much go away. Also the ARF's don't have any washin in the wing and they fly very smooth. I've assembled 2 ARF's and got them down to 2 1/2 # by using micro gear through out. Dump the stick pushrods and put in nyrods (kits and ARF's) or they won't turn for crap. Put the servos in front of the the dashboard (instead of behind it as on the plans). We use 700 mah nimh packs under the tank and a 4oz tank. If you use the ARF make darn sure you tape the wing joint or they will fold!

Our local clubs sponsor a series, and I'm building a couple of HOB kits to compete. Our rules require the use of a .25 TT bushed engine and an unmodified HOB kit, Global ARF or scratch built from HOB plans. Copla questions:
Are HS-81's enough torque to fly one of these?

and

Does "unmodified" mean no carbon in the wing spars?
I realize that you guys are likely somewhere else, but having never done this before I thought I'd ask about the carbon thing. Don't want to bend the rules and mess up the fun, but KNOW that a little carbon would be nice in this wing..

Thanks in advance!!

Windrider, HS 81's are fine in these things. You can use them in the wing also but make sure you get the aileron pushrods nice and free. If you build the wings with a good fitting joint between panels and tape the joints with the fiberglass that comes in the kits they will hold up just fine. I've seen the ARF wings fold up in flight but I have not seen any kit planes fail in flight.
You'll have to go by your local rules for the definition of "unmodified". Our rules allow you to change the internal construction as long as you don't change the outside dimensions in any way.
