Hobbico Elite would be my pick.

Charges and discharges 1-3 cell Lithium-Ion and Lithium-Polymer packs
Peak charges, discharges and cycles 1-10 cell NiCd or NiMH packs
Charges two batteries at once

Check out the Duratrax Intelipeak Ice. After much research I think it is one of the best out there. I own a Electrifly Triton from Great Planes and an MRC Super Brain 977. I Like the Super Brain becouse it will charge two packs at the same time, but the functions in the Triton are better (and it has a thermal probe to monitor battery temperature). The intelli peak ice seems to have even better function than the Triton.

Of course any DC charger can be used with mains, just buy a PSU. Most of the upper range chargers seem to be DC only.

How much do you want to spend? It won't charge LiPOs.

A darn good DC charger that will is the Multiplex LN-5014 for $80.

thanks you guys for all your help

DC looks like the way to go so I've narrowed down my choices between the multiplex and the duratrax ICE

would this be able to power them?

if not what field battery would?

Yup standard 12v lead acid battery can power DC charger, 7A charger won't last very long with charging battery packs. You'll need a charger for the lead acid battery.

Cheaper to buy that Ripmax PSU (same one I have) good for indoor use charging..but I would charge lithium poly batteries outside.

gopeder111:

I recommend you get a bannana to cigrette lighther addapter from radio shack. I constantly find myself charging batteries while on the road to a flying site. Also, a bannana to alligator clips like the ones provided with the Inellipeak Ice are usefull. I also recommend you get a 12V power converter to use your charger at home. Bear in mind that the intellipeak cannot charge lead acid cells (which a Triton and other chargers can). In my oppinion the great thing about the intellipeak is its ability to measure the internal resistance of the battery packs which is very good to determine the state of health of a battery, particularly lithium batteries. Another great function of the intellipeak is the pulse charge (or reflex) function which is good to maintain the Nickel based batteries, as well as the step charge function.

You may not use all the advanced functions availible with the intellipeak ice charger at first, but I have found out that over a relatively shor period of time you will get courioys about other aspects of the hobby and your needs for equipment will grow. With the intellipeak ice you won't spend two times on a charger looking for better functions.

You should take a look at the book Batteries in a Portable World. I read it a couple of days ago and find it to be extremly usefull. I wish I had read it before deciding on a particular charger.

All in all I, in my opinion the intellipeak is the best bet.

It will charge that pack. Specs at the bottom of the URL I gave you.
Number Cells: 1-10 NiCd or NiMH (1.2-12.0V), 1-3 Li-Po or Li-Ion (3.6-11.1V) Fast Charge Current: 50-2000mA

Some people are advocating only charging LiPo's at half their rated capacity to prolong their life. They are also recommending a voltage cutoff of no less than 3.3 volts per cell.

This charger is ac/dc, can do up to 3-cell li-pos and can run off of a 12 volt battery (or charge them, many chargers can't charge lead acid batteries).

Here are all the features:
