Howdy Fisher I bought a heavier duty triac and now im trying to find one of many soldering guns to fix it . I bought a computer power supply for the CNC cutter but haven't done the mod on it yet. I have been holding off till I get moved down stairs which is on hold cause John hurt his back. Anyhow im playing with putting the Sport Jet together. I got all the parts but a controler but I find my GWS Inrunner is hotter than we thought so im going to use the 30amp I got for the Foam flier cause im thinking the outrunner can get by with a smaller one. The GWS draws 23 amps. What size are youall using on your outrunners any how? Will a
20 work or should I get a 25 ? I guess I can hunt the info down now. I went outside to sand on funflyer #1 foamflyer ? and it stormed. Forgot to check the weather but it was nice. It didn't rain much but the humidity is bad now. Catch a big fish for me and send a pic. HA I wish you could send some fresh fish down here. Daughters fenderbender is over $900 to get fixed . I told that old man it would be close to a Grand. You take care and have FUN Ken

Ken,

I am using a 15 amp ESC with a BP-21 and a 7 x 4 prop. Even with a more aggressive prop the ESC did fine. I may be pushing the limits without knowing it though. I have over 100 flights on the ESC with no noted problems.

I will post a photo or two next time a get a chance. My fishing has been limited so far this year. I need to get it in gear.

Take Care

I guess i'll be good to go if I get an 18 or 20 for the foamflyer #1. To bad about not fishing enough cause theres lots of people that can't get enough if they went every day. I got spoiled in Fla. growing up. The family all had boats uncles and friends and big enough for ocean fishing. Fishing in the edge of the gulfstream allways was fun. BIG FISH Sails and Kings were the most fun. My uncle Mike and I fished every weekend for 3 months trying to get a sailfish small enough to fit on a wall in the den. Goal was 6 ft. and we caught big ones all the time. He finaly caught a 6 1/2 footer and had it mounted in a arch. That was back in the good ol days . Any how my xtals came in today so i'll be hooking up servos and getting them centered so final assy. can start. To hot today to go out in the garage to look for soldering gun. Its cooled off some 87 Right in front of me. (Johnson City) 84 Here. Im worried about critterhunter. He should have checked in by now. OH ! What town are you in & i'll put the weather up as a favorite and keep up on your conditions. Happy Landings Ken

IT just started raining HARD with lots of wind , and Libby (my puppy) wants to go out. HA She can wait I might melt

Here I am. Needless to say my nerves have been shot lately. So, I've just been forcing myself to go to work and then coming straight home and laying around to try to chill out. Not much motivation to do anything at the moment.

Sorry to hear about the accident and his back problems and hope you are feeling better. Maybe my bad luck rubbed off on you.

Remember that outrunners in general don't require a gearbox and are perfect for most park flyers. Inrunners have less torque and thus usualy need a gearbox. I would have figured you'd want the inrunner on the smaller plane and the outrunner on the foamie.

It's a hot one here in Cleveland right now. Record heat for today and with the heat and humidity they said it feels like 100 degrees. I've been working in it all day and still have another job or two to do but figured I'd cool down in the library for a bit and write you guys a quick update.

Still haven't heard any news on the girl from my insurance man. He called the house a few times but can't get ahold of the parents to find out her condition.

Critterhunter~ No news is good news on her health is my thinking . The inrunner is for the Wemotec fan im putting in the jet. I found it max's 23 amps so im using my 30 amp ESC with it> I don't think i'll need one that big for the outrunner. I think i'll get a 20 amp. I finaly got ALMOST all the parts needed to finish the jet. I just remembered I don't have a Y for the ailerons. If I knew more about the 6EXA I guess I could use it instead of a splitter. I just called the LHS and they have a splitter. Now I got to decide which way to go. I guess i'll get out the instructions and see if I can handle it. Question ? What did the papers have to say about the accident ? The one on this end is OK . The little old man is going to pay from pocket to repair door. Question #2 Will it hurt to have the antenna near a peice of carbon fiber thats in center top of fuselage ? I remember back in my CB days you could use black tape to add length to a top wound antenna. A few wraps of tape and put cap on with nail polish . I hope things work out and keep your chin up. ~ > Ken

Ken,

If you have a 6 channel Receiver for your plane then you do not need to buy a Y for splitting the aileron channel just plug on into the normal channel and plug the other into channel 6 on the rx. At least thats how I believe it works with my HiTec Optic 6. But the Y is pretty cheap and easy. Cost me $9 since I only had a 4 channel RX.

You must check out the newly released Air Hogs Hydrofoam. The call it the Storm Launcher. For about $100 bucks you get a very interesting model.

I have 2 R127DF receivers but im fighting a weight thing so I guess i'll buy a Y unless I can figure how to mix chanell 1 & 3 on my 6EXA which is still in the box. The dif in weight on the two receivers is bigtime and I guess I will stay with the GWS R-4P. I haven't done anything the last couple of days cause my tummy was on the fritz. Today I ate. Those hydro/planes are nuts. Theres lots of them out now but I got enough trouble with what im working on now. It got up in the upper 90s today so I stayed inside. Can't take the heat, Knocks me down. It sounds like the little girls ins. man is playing mind games with critter not giving any info. Dad burn ins. companys are like that. Do the mind game. Well im going to lay my head down for a few. I got a new SciFi

Hey guys, only have a minute to post....Found out the girl has a concushion and her leg is hurt. Don't know how bad the leg is, just that she hurt it. So, in other words, sounds like she is OK and that's a big relief. From what I understand her family has a lawyer and is now trying to sue my insurance company. Since I didn't get a ticket and my insurance guy said they'll deny any claim they try to make I don't think they'll get any money out of them. Either way, glad she's OK. Nerves are doing slightly better but I still just work and then stay home and do nothing. Thus, haven't thrown the electronics into the foamie yet. Off to work...

Glad to hear that the girl did not have any serious injuries.

I put SO What #3 up yesterday with the video camera onboard. Got over 5 solid minutes of low level flying in the local park. Still have not figured out how to reduce the size of the file and keep the quality up enough to post it. Heck of a lot of fun though. Trimmed the plane up a bit more and she really handles well. I would put my flight videos up against anyting Hobby Lobby posts to sell their planes. I have not upsized the plane yet. I might take a turn to the dark side and build a full sized hover craft for my next project. Who knows.

I'd like to see that video so hope you figure out how to post it soon. Nerves are getting better but I've been working so much lately I don't have the energy to do anything but rest when I get home. My Saturdays and Sundays have mostly been spent doing my work and an extra job or two. The extra stuff is starting to slow down just a bit now so I might even have this Sunday off. Starting to feel up to throwing the electronics into the foamie so maybe this weekend. I'm anxious to see how this latest build handles since the aileron is bigger. The elevator is not as wide but since I have the booms slightly further apart it's longer. I'm hoping the booms being a bit further apart (and thus the stabilzer and elevator being longer) don't lesson the turning ability of the plane. Maybe the bigger aileron will compensate. Will report when I have something to say about it.

Not sure if I mentioned this. That cheap BP21 look alike they've been raiving about on the Stryker forum (It has unlimited verticle and also more speed than the BP21 but draws 20 or more amps)....Since it's as cheap as the BP21 I may pick one up. My BP30 amp speed control can handle the amp draw. My Common Sense 3 cell lipos are rated at 20 amps but have a 30 amp burst raiting for seconds at a time. My thinking is this (and I'd like to hear some input from you guys)...I plan to pull my newest BP21 off my Stryker and use it on the foamie. The BP21 on the foamie has a short sometimes that resets the speed control and I haven't bothered to track it down (this BP21 is beat up from a lot of crashes on the foamie and older Stryker builds). I also have a third BP21 that is in need of some major soldering and rebuilding. Anyway, I'll throw my Stryker's BP21 onto the latest foamie and pick up that new motor for my Stryker. Don't want to buy higher C raited lipos at the moment to handle it but my idea is this. I could set the trim control on my computer radio's throttle to keep the limit of full throttle well below 20 amps to protect my lipos. This should give me BP21 or better speed and performance. Then, when I want to go all out, I'll adjust the throttle trim to allow me to go full power for a few seconds at a time to keep within the burst limits of these packs. Ideas? Not even sure if the throttle trim can be set to a negative number at rest so it keeps the full throttle off limits when the stick is moved to full? I know it can be done inside the radio with throw or sub trim somehow but want to use the external trim control so I can adjust it in flight.

Fisher, have you tried an 8x4 prop on the BP21 foamie yet? What little experience I had with it impressed me more so over the 7x4. The amp draw is like 12 to 14 amps, well below your speed control/lipo ability. Plan to maiden foamie #3 with an 8x4.

I've got a 1.2ghz 800mw wireless camera setup that I've only used a few times on the Stryker and, while the range was great and the video impressive, the way I had the antenna mounted kept causing drop outs. Should have had it verticle. I've also got a 2.4ghz 2000mw tx/rx that I still haven't stripped and hacked to a plane yet.

Ken and I worried where you were for a while. Then it was me dropping out for a bit. Now I wonder where he is?

I've pretty much only logged on to check this thread lately so I fear all the junk I'm going to have to read to catch up on the Stryker thread and several others. Later...

IM GLAD YOUR GETTING YOUR HEAD ON. Had caps lock on. I finaly got to the electronics store today and im the proud owner of a new soldering gun. I got a cordless but not a cold heat. Man at ESS told me the cold heat didn't get very hot. I pulled my new computer PS out of the box and have gotten it to turn on. Jumper Green to black. Im building it to have 3.3v 5v and 12v in jacks Somewhere . Top or side. I ordered a pair of 800mAh 20c= 30c 30second burst =40c short burst 11.1v batterys for the sport jet so i'll have 2 1250mAh 15c for the foam flyer. I should be able to cut the wings soon. Cause if the power supply don't work i'll have the 5 volt tap from PS 2. I cut the weight almost 2 oz going to the 800mah batterys the little jet has a wild motor.4600kv 23 amp wot so it should cruise at 1/2 speed. Im going to get a Cellpro 4s balance charger there $69.95 and they do it all. They will save a overdischarged battery also. SO ! I have most every thing I need to build several planes. Well im going to play with my new stuff. Great hearing from you . Take care and get back to flying. I had a cop tell me I could use my 4 wheeler to go to the park. YEA ! I'll be flying soon. > Ken

Just came from doing some catch up on the Stryker forum and still have about 20 pages to read. Either way, Ken....Here's the skinny on those motor model numbers. The BP21 that Fisher and I have been using on the foamie and the Stryker is also known as a BM2409-21T from Aero-Nuts.com. It'll draw about 14 amps on a 7x6 (best for Stryker) slow flyer prop or about 12 amps on an 8x4 (I prefer for this foamie). These are all amp raitings when powered by a 3 cell lipo.

The new more powerful motor guys are now stepping up to is the BM2409-12T. I'm still checking the prop/amp draw raitings on it. This motor looks identical to the BP21 and costs only about $2 more...somewhere well under $20. Will post data as I read it on amp/prop info.

Not sure which motors you listed that you bought? Are any of them the above ones? I would recommend the BP21 for this foamie because it's more than enough speed and power for it. Then again, the 12T motor would give you unlimited verticle as it does on the Stryker.

The motors I have are a 2408--21 = 21oz. thrust with a 8 X 6 prop and a 2410--12 & use a 9 X 5 prop 20.6 oz thrust. Thats my outrunners my inrunner is a GWS BR-2028-3 4600kv I have it on a Wemotec micro fan. Next motor will be a Feiago 5300kv for
a 40mm fan. That motor only weighs 17 grams. Im going to order some Depron and build a Nano Bandit when I get caught up. I finaly got a soldering gun and have started putting the computer power supply together for a supply for the Cellpro 4S im going to order come the 3rd. I been looking at chargers and the Cellpro does it all and its made in the USA. The next few days I should get lots done I have parts and the tools now. I have an aileron Y comming monday and some deans plugs for my new batterys.
the battery soldering gun sucked so I went and got another one. the cordless works good on small wires but to put big wires on a deans plug its not quite hot enough. Im really looking forward to working with Depron. I have read so much about it that I just have to try my hand with it. Got to get a big pack of #11 blades. Well its time to solder some wires. Don't work to hard and stay cool. > Ken

Ken, just remember that motors can often use slightly more agressive or larger props...and push a few more ands and wats then what they are usually raited for. Most of the pros figure out that the suggested prop size isn't right for the motor for best all around speed and torque...and when you factor it what type of plane it's going on and how much the plane weighs that changes the variables even more. Try several variations of props in both pitch and size around the suggested size until you find what really makes it shine. I may start throwing the electronics in #3 tonight since I've now decided to buy a BM2409-12T on my Stryker and will steal the BP21 (BM2408-21T) off the Stryker to go on this latest foamie build. I also picked up some E-Flite Bullet plugs to mate the motors to the speed controls on both planes. The plugs I was using were making me nervous as I don't know if they can handle the amps. Deans Ultras are the best choice for the battery plug to speed control.

Man, I swear I don't pay attention. My initial model # for the BP21 (Balsa Products model number) *IS* BM2408-21T (Aero-Nuts model #), so you *DO* have a BP21 there that Fisher and I have been using on the Stryker and this foamie. Use a 7x4 or 8x4 APC Slow Flier prop on it for this foamie. I couldn't find the 8x4 in an APC Slow Flyer prop so I'm using an APC 8x4 E (Electric) prop. The Slow Flyer prop in a 7x6 was the best size found for using the BP21 on the Stryker...providing a good combination of speed and power. On this foamie you don't want as much speed but torque is always welcome...so Fisher found the 7x4 to work well. I prefer the 8x4 even more for a further increase in torque while keeping speed the same. On the 7x4 or 8x4 you'll be pushing well below 14 amps....in the 12+ amp range.

So far, and I still have a good bit of reading to do, the initial prop size guys are prefering on the BM2409-12T is a 7x7 or 7x7.5 on the Stryker. It will do unlimited vertical and the speed is 100+ mph. However, so far I think it looks like this motor will draw somewhere in the 25 to 29 amp range with this size prop but have further reading to do. with my 20 amp able lipos I'll have to keep it at somewhere between half and 2/3rds throttle....but can go all out with my 30 amp burst ability for a few seconds at a time. I'm searching now for some cheap lipos in the 2000+ ma range that can handle about 30 amps constant or more to power it WOT all the time. Maybe Fisher has found some cheap ones?

Forgot to add this...The 12T is producing about 34oz of thrust (compared to 21oz on the BP21) using an 8x4 prop and I *think* is drawing about 19 amps versus 12-14 for the BP21. Still have a ton of reading to do so these numbers may change for the new motor as they were in the initial test stages and the amp raitings were a qualified guess. I'm drooling over the idea of doing unlimited vertical with the 12T on the Stryker!

I bought my new batterys off fleabay. They are Enerland & thats the company that makes PolyQuest. If you check them out let me know what you think about his prices. Ebay # 320012229025 brings up a PolyQuest what your wanting. They come from Wisc.
so it will be fast to you if you go with him. I got my hot wire cutter power supply repaired (haven't tested yet) and all I need is to find my rivit tool and the computer supply is done also. I put 5 banana plugs in a plastic box . 3.3 volt 5 volt and 12 volt and 2 ground plugs. I have no idea what i'll use the 3.3 volt but the 5v will be nice to bench test radio equip. Also the 5 volt will power the CNC cutter stepper motors. Which one of these days i'll be getting back to. I guess I did OK on the motors cause I see them selling for twice what I paid for mine. I seen some of the 9 motors for sale somewhere but can't remember how much. My man in China beat BPs prices so im going to counter for 2 motors cheaper yet. I think i'll offer him 29$ each shipped. Its time for supper .
Take care.

Woah, so much information, so little brain space hehe.

Sounds like you guys are flying along

I ordered me some piano wire today so a week or so and I'll have it.
Guy I know at the toy shop in town (closest thing we have to a r/c or hobby shop)
said he uses bicycle spokes for cheap linkages if they dont have to be too long. Dunno how well they'd work.

Anyway, been looking at your motors and props etc. What is the bes way to mount the brushless on the foamie? Thought about epoxying a ply plate to the back and screwing it on, but dunno how hard it'd be to remove later.

Also, those props.. are they gunna hit the ground on landing or do you have some kind of landing gear/ skids?

cheers all

Jax

The pros building this model (Critterhunter and Fisher) use plywood with a dowel epoxyed to it Im going to drill a hole threw the ply. and maybe be stronger. Small spokes should work fine cause there stiff. And I don't know about the props but the motor is mounted high . Cheers > Ken

The 7x4 prop will (I think) hit the ground but it doesn't matter. The motor on the Stryker is much lower to the ground and I've never snapped a prop or broke a shaft when landing. Just make sure the motor is off and the brake is OFF when landing and the prop will move out of the way if it needs to. You could make the body an inch or two taller so the prop clears the ground if you want.

As for mounting the BP21 to the plane, if you look back a few pages you'll find photos of what I did. In general, take the BP21 mounting plate off the motor (is held on by a set screw). Cut a small flat piece of square plywood just big enough for the plate to lay on. Center the plate on the plywood and mark the three mounting holes onto the plywood. Now drill those out with a small bit on the wood. I use small sheet metal or wood screws to attach the BP21 plate to the plywood, but you may have to drill out the BP21 plate holes a tiny bit to give them enough room. Next, take a big piece of dowl rod about 3 or 4 inches long and about 1/2 to 2/3rds the diameter of a broom handle and epoxy it to the back of the plywood. Then melt a hole in the fuse that is slightly smaller than the dowl rod so it'll really be snug. Throw some glue on the dowl rod and stick the thing into the hole. You want the plywood to be flush with the top edge of the fuse and of course straight and centered as possible. After that dries just take your motor and re-attach it to the BP21 mounting plate. DO NOT over tighten the set screw or you might distort the motor shaft hole and blow a bearing. However, if you don't tighten it enough the motor might come loose and spin it's self until the three motor wires rip out. Best thing to do is put a dab of nail polish on the set screw to make sure it dosen't vibrate loose.

Critter,

Glad to see you are feeling better. I assume that trimming the throttle channel to limit your top end amp draw would all depend on how your ESC functions. If you fired up your TX, energized the ESC and then adjusted the throttle trim down by 20% or so you should be OK. If you simply set the trim before energizing the ESC for each flight you might end up getting full throttle since some ESCs automatically decide what 100% is on their own. I would try it. I do remember someone on another post planning to do the same thing. Maybe it was you posting elsewhere.

Ken,

You inspire me. Now get that CNC foam cutter built so I can copy yours.

Jax,

I would stay away from the bicycle spokes unless they are very thin/light. Any additional weight you put in the back end will require more counter weight at the nose to balance the plane. And it already requires that the battery be set quite a ways forward. As for the motor mount, Critter is doing just what I have done though it sounds like he is using a much thicker dowel. I have been using a 8 cm long dowel that is about 1 cm in diameter. Prop does hang below the fuselage but never had any damage during a planned landing.

I've taken the plunge....Bought that new 12T motor from RChotdeals.com and two of their 3 cell 2200ma 20C/28C lipos with balancing plugs to handle the amp draw. If you prefer to order over the phone like me go to the Contact Us section and they have a phone number. That's the main reason I didn't buy from Aero-Nuts, plus I like to give the US boys the business even if it's slightly more expensive. Shipping is also faster this way. This thing is said to make the Stryker about 20 mph or more faster than the BP21 with unlimited vertical at half throttle. Should be a barn burner! Best part is I now have my Common Sense RC 3 cell 2000ma 10C packs to use exclusive on the BP21 foamie. I'm going to yank my newer BP21 off the Stryker to go on the latest foamie build. That web page has some pretty good deals. The 12T is $19....a few dollars more than Aero-Nuts, but the lipo packs above are only $55 and that's the best price I've been able to find on 20C lipos. He ships them out of Michigan as well so to Ohio he said shipping should only take a day. Better than a week or so from Hong Kong. Shipping is free for anything over $100. Two packs and the motor came to $129 with free shipping. I'm excited...going to use one of my BP30 amp speed controls to fire it.

Wow, this thread has been dead for a few weeks. My attention was diverted to throwing the 12T motor and new lipos into my Stryker, replacing the BP21. Now that that's done I'm back to finishing up the foamie. The body has been sitting there already built for a month or two now. Took the BP21 off my Stryker as it's in better shape than my other two BP21s for the foamie. A few days ago I soldered all the electronics up. This time I used E-Flite gold bullet connectors to mate the ESC to the motor. Like those things and it sure does make for a quick and easy motor swap. I'm mounting the servos differently this time....melting a chamber to fit it inside the boom from the side instead of on top. Makes for a much cleaner look. I will post photos and such of these steps and more to compliment the ones from a page or two ago when I was building the body. To melt the servo chambers I simply cut a piece of aluminum to match the bottom of the servo. Well, slightly smaller as heating it up to melt the chamber always melts it a bit bigger than the part you are using to melt it out with. I just hold the aluminum with a pair of plyers and then heat it up with a propane torch. I like to then test how hot it is by testing it out some junk foam. When it cools down enough to melt the chamber without melting away a bunch of foam around it I instantly move over to the plane and melt them out. It also helps to measure and mark the depth you want on your pliers so you don't go any deeper than you have to. Used this method for the motor mount dowl rods this time as well. I simply took a screwdriver and heated it up and stuck it in the back of the fuse. If you need the hole to be wider than it's melting just wiggle the thing around in there. I'm using two dowl rods roughly almost as big around as your pinky and about four inches long. Then took some glue and dipped the dowl rods in it and stuck them in their holes. Leave them sticking out a bit for now so you can be sure your plywood square the BP21 metal mounting plate it screwed to will be touching the dowl rods when you lay it on there. Coat the surface with more glue and stick it on. Push it snug so it pushes the rods the last bit of way into the chamber. Make sure the mounting plate looks centered on the body and look as well from the top of the wing to see that it's parallel with the trailing edge of the wing (IE: not pointing left or right on you). I used foam safe glue called Weldbond found at most craft stores. Only problem is this stuff takes over night to dry. That Gorilla glue you guys have been talking about would probably be better. I then placed a weight on top of the motor mount and left the plane standing tail up in a chair to keep the weight pressing straight down on it to prevent the motor mount from moving around on me. Photos and more details soon....

I was wondering how you were doing with the motor deal. Have you flown the "9" yet ? and if so how much differance do you think there is. Im sitting here at my desk and just checked the mail. I just got done slitting a very shallow cut on the fuslage & out the wing root to run the antenna out the wing. I finaly got the controler programed and the wires to the motor switched. I will get some of those connectors.I cut a slit and pushed the wire in the slit and ran some Goop along the cut and when I glue the wing i'll have a cut ready out to the end of the wing but don't think i'll glue it in in case I tear off the wing. Ha ! Plan for your crash.
Im the proud owner of a pair of Feaigo 5322kv motors with matching CC Thunderbird 9 controlers for them. Im going to put them on a pair of 40mm GWS fans Maybe for a S-3A Viking that Keven64 over in England is drawing .I ordered a 6MMfoam Super Bandit and it might be shipped tomorrow. Im going to try to use thinner depron and use a lighter power system. Yes I have a scale now I found to build electrics you need one. I went down stairs the other day to cut the wings down and the wire got hot and then quit. I checked all the componets and can't find any thing bad. All risistors are at the value they came at. No diodes on it and only 1 capapisitor. Which I guess i'll change and try again. 6$ for a triac will get costly if I don't figure it out. There is a chance I don't have enough voltage to turn on the triac and there is a way to check but I cant remember which pins to jump. Im about to put a dimmer switch on the computer supply and try it out. Im getting mad at not being able to finish the Foam Flyer # 1
You should try some Gorilla Glue you will like it cause it swells and fills all the crevices. I used it to mend the wing on the firebird and if theres small peices missing it fills it up. It has to be held tight together. I put tape over break and poke holes in it so exess can escape and it leaves a smooth joint. Ain't nuthin wrong with a smooth joint. Im still not moved downstairs so my building space is limited. Im on lacix which don't let you get 10 min. from the little room.and it would kill me running up and down the stairs. Well I just got called to supper . Later

Wake up Fisher

After supper the UPS girl brought me my new CellPro 4S charger and adapter board. So now I can start doing some test and be able to recharge. I guess theres no reason for me to delay finishing the planes now. Now im wondering how small a battery I can get to recharge in the field. Input voltage 10 to 16VDC Input current up to 6A at 10VDC & up to 4.5A at 13.6V . I bet I can get a
12 Amp battery and get several charges from it. YOUR THOUGHTS ???
