Never heard of a wing tube breaking, bending yes but not breaking. That would have to be very brittle aluminum.
I would check this out.
What I don't understand is the cornflakes. If the wing tube sheared then the wing should have pretty much stayed intact depending on the wing mounting method. I have had a wing shear years ago that pulled the entire tube from the wing and that caused cornflakes. Was the tube still in the wing at impact? or did you mean the cornflakes came at ground impact?

I think what is really important in the code is The 3003-H14. Not sure what type of alu it is but it looks like it is not 6061-T6 which is aircraft aluminum.

OK just checked in my books. 6061-T6 (ultimate strenght at 45 ksi) is exaclty 2 times better than 3003-H14 (ultimate strenght at 22 ksi). The 3003 series of aluminum is classified as medium strenght high workability aluminum whereas 6061-T6 is aircraft grade aluminum.

I would think the 6061-T6 is what should be used as the quality versus price factor is very good and weight is the same from an alloy to another. There are also much better alloys but they are very expensive (3-4 times more).

The Taurus ran flawlessly. Lots of power and transition was great and very smooth . I think the 22x8 prop is the right one at my altitude. Great combo!!

Hi Steve,
Just wondering what altitude you fly at. We are about 1000 feet here in Scotland.
Also guys, any prop size recomendations for either the DA50 or Taurus. My mate will be in the USA for his holidays and props are 1/2 the price we have to pay.

Finally, for now, does the engine box need cut back for the Taurus or just the DA50? The jury is still out on the engine but I like to decide on the engine before I start.

cheers

Tom

Regarding the wing tube: I checked mine and it is 6061-T6 aluminum (for the 27%, the kit is a couple years old). Not sure if it's CA's normal practice to not make the wing tubes out of 6061-T6. When I first got the kit (from Aeroworks), the wing tube was the wrong size so Aeroworks sent me out a new one. Not sure if it was a CA stock item or rather a tube they had from another kit.

Tom - not to answer for Steve and I'm sure he'll share all details, but he did have to cut the box back for the Taurus - I believe an inch or so. It's in this thread some where - back around page 3 or 4 I think.

Tom,
flymeaway is right. I cut 1.5" off the stock engine box. Its in post #117 on page 5 (I think). I fly at 5600 to 5800 feet above sea level and I am using the new Taurus 22 X 8 prop. It seems to be the right prop for my altitude. It still does not pull hard out of a hover, but it gets the job done. Once the engine is broke in, I'll try some thinner blades to get a better pull out of hover. I've only got 15 flights on the plane at the moment, due to our windy season . So far, nothing is coming loose but I do check the muffler bolts often. I drilled two small holes in the cowl so I can check them after flying.

Tom,
Have you decided on a motor yet?

EL TEMUCANO;
That 400 rpm probably realy helps out in a hover!!

I called Aero Works and they still have a few 27% kits available. I'm thinking of picking up a spare. Has anyone ordered on of these recently?

I ordered mine from Aero-Works. They had nice service. I liked it.

Nice Pipe there man!!! Next time when im building something like that again, i will make space in the fuse for a tuned pipe or even a canister or two... But I've seen the new 28% or something, had that space already there!!!

he he he...Right now it would look like a biiiiiggg crate with cardboard inserts....I moved to Indianapolis, my stuff is in storage untill I find a home. I will start it up again, the fuse was framed less foam and it made the move okay. I was working on the tunnel for cannisters when it got packed so I will be back at it.
The person in CT still wants it when finished, so hopefully this fall I will whoop it into shape..
That is if we find a suitable house, as of right now the house we like has a spot for a work shop but no trailer space. Figures I got the truck with a 6.5' bed instead of 8' due to the trailer. Might have to sell the wifes car (uh I mean trailer) and then build an extension for the truck.
WE SHALL SEE.........

My goal for this summer is to find a good used trainer (everything in storage) for my 10yr old boy and get him flying by the end of summer...I am home 3 days a week, the heck if I am going to let him sit in front of the tube when he can be outside enjoying all the sights at the local club field.
