I did not fiberglass my wing center section. However, I used milled fiber mixed in epoxy to join the wings.

Hey guys, what servos are you using for the elevator? Do you think that an hs-5925mg would weigh too much? (1.97 oz). I was thinking of using it just because I may get one in a trade. (based on reports here I'm planning on a saito 100 up front)
Thanks.

The weight shouldn't be an issue. I am using a standard hs-545bb @ 6v on the elevator. I wouldn't mind having a little more torque and metal gears... your selection should be fine.

Thanks Texan. Did you add any weight to the nose with the 545? (I assume you are using the saito 100?)

Thanks.

Nope, I am using a ST G90 for power. The Saito 100 is approx 3oz lighter than my setup. I only needed to move a five cell receiver pack to balance at 3" aft of the leading edge. My battery pack is currently on the CG. You may need to place your battery further forward to balance. There is plenty of room under the fuel tank forward of F2.

Got some good flights in yesterday, however, the plane still seems a little nose heavy at 3" CG. According to some rough MAC calculations, the recommended CG ,2.75", is at 23% MAC. Further calculations show 25% MAC is approx. 3" from LE and 30% MAC is 3.5" back from LE. I would not want to go further back than 30% MAC. So, CG in the range of 3" to 3.5" from LE seems reasonable... Has anyone here tried 3.25"? What about 3.5"?

You are correct. I found that 3-1/4" was about right for overall flying. I have yanked the 125 out of my plane, though - still not enough power for me, and am going to convert it to electric. Thinking power 60 outrunner at 12-1400 watts.

Ok, so I slapped the new head on the ST G90, which looks completely different, being fully domed inside and not cupped out in the middle and the glow plug threads are a brass threaded insert like was used by the Itilians. The G90 runs great now. With 15% it has unlimited vertical now and the perry carb fixed the transitional problems so I'm running out a full tank now which never happened before. Some of you know my bird weighted in at 5.14 all up "less wheel pants", so the 90 preforms good. With 75 flights on her now it's a pleasure to fly and even more of a crowd pleaser now that I have more faith in the motor to hover at ground level.
If your ST G90 has the inserted head,,dump it, get the new one, there is that much a difference in preformance.

Bikermonkey,

Congrats on the repaired ST90. What was up with the defective head? Anyway, glad to hear you are back in action. By the way, can you tell us where your CG is and how your throws and expo are setup?

Thanks,

TX

The origional head on th ST G90 has a hexagon insert pushed into the head, from the outside in,,the glowplug screws into the insert. This hexagon insert was blown out, along with glowplug by engine compression. I can't figure any logical reason why an insert would be used on an internal combustion engine. It just seems so obvious pressure will blow the insert out. The dome shapped interior of the heads are different as well. The insert type head is a stepped down dome, the new head is a full concave dome with brass threaded insert for the glow plug, much better.
I fly on low rates and swith to high rates for aerobatics. High rates have 100% rudder, also 100 rudder on low, elevator is 60% expo (60% middle stick soft, full 45 degree at +40) and ailerons are 70% expo (70% soft or low, last 30% full deflection). I like a lot of stick before high rates take over. No mixing as it does not pull in knife edge and has no bad behaviors in axial or looping attitudes. Balance is at 31/8, it was very unstable further back than that. I put in two degrees of upthrust and two degress right thrust for the engine. 12 oz tank. Balance was done with radio gear placement. Incedence is zero on wing and stab.

Another quick question: What size spinner are you all using for the saito 100? Aluminum?

Thanks.

The elevator servo,a 3515, stripped out inflight on the bird this weekend. Control was spuratic, but enough so that between unsolicited snaps and rolls I was able to coax it to the runway unharmed although I was a wreck. Lesson #45, get enough servo to do the job.

It was a hairy experience for a bit. I'd just came out off a violent spin and flew out level for at least 30' or so when it snapped on it's own and it did not look like a common radio hit. Responce was poor, lots of rudder and opposite aileron kept it more or less level for a short period then it would roll out either left or right so a constant state of near contol was all I had, the approach turn was perticularlly interesting. But in the end it met the runway safely. I think using throttle for altitude control was a major factor in a safe wobbly approach. Had a chance to put a few flights on a 100 size funtana this weekend,, awesome, got to have one.

I was reading earlier in the thread about sealing the hinge gaps.......do you only seal one side of the gap? And does it matter which side, top or bottom?
Thanks

I took the plunge and built one (Funtana 100 X) - All I can say is "WoW" - put a YS 110 on it and you will not be disappointed.

Strupp22,
I seal the top with clear or same color. You can do either or both, but if you only do the bottom dirt and dust accumilates in the gap and looks poor.

TedG,
I flew one a 100X but it had a pumped 120 in it,, that bird acts like a much larger plane. Elevator down to the deck and pop it to a hover right off the dirt with the 120, then fly up and out inverted or in harrior. Does your 110 come out of hover with enough authority to go vertical or pogo?

I got the Eflite power 60 outrunner - it was the cheapest part. Now I just need to scrounge up $250 for one set of batteries and $150 for the speed control...I think the 180-200 watts per pound will be worth it, though!

this is what I use on all my canopies. you can probably pick it up at ypur local hs. r/c car guys use it for their car bodies. spray it on the inside of the canopy. it may take a couple of applications to get the desired color you want. just make sure your canopy is clean before applying. its a lot easier than trying to dye the canopy.

this is the spinner I'm using with my 100. 2 1/4" is the size.

Thanks, I had never seen that stuff before. I have tried a couple of times to dye a canopy and it never worked out. I'll give this a try.

So how about some more flight reports. Is anyone still flying this edge? I still haven't bought mine yet. Give me some more good news so I can convince the boss that it's worth it!

Bodywerks- I've been considering an electric version of this ARF too. Would really like to see some pics/ details when you get a chance.

Will do. Gotta put some stuff on ebay or here first to build up funds, though. Looking at about $550 for the entire setup, including one set of batteries - add $250 for each additional set.
