I've got a total of about 8 hours into building this plane and all I have left is to do the linkage rods for the servos, mount the tank and battery and switch and I am done! I also went ahead and threw the plane on the scale along with all the other stuff I will need (of which some stuff was still in the package), and even threw a 3 ounce wrench on to simulate the "weight demons". Also, so far, the only thing that came with the kit that I am not using is the landing gear cover. Mind you, too, that I am using the Saito 125...
Total weight = 6 pounds, 8 ounces!
I was going to be satisfied with 7 pounds, so I guess you could say I am happy!
Also, the entire build process has been effortless. This has been one of my best assembly experiences...SCORE ONE FOR AEROWORKS!!!
I will post the actual, final weight once it is actually done. which will be no later than this friday...

Okay, final weight with a Saito 125 is 6 pounds, 10 ounces, but with a heavy Great planes spinner. Other equipment used:
APC 15X8
Sullivan 12 ounce round tank
5245 digital minis on the ailerons
945's for rudder & elevator
hs-81 for throttle
JR 770 rx
1100mah nimh 6V pack

Bodywerks, sounds like you are ready to fly this weekend. Good luck with it ! I spoke to Aeroworks about my birds inability to bleed off speed, they said this plane will do that with a very aft CG, so I moved mine back to three and one eight and will try that this weekend with the 14/4W apc.
On another note, I just bought a Sig Kougar kit, it's primitive, but they are wicked fast with a 50 and tuned pipe draging it thru space. Not that the areobatic need has been met, I have the need for speed.
Let us know how your bird flies !

I already did the maiden today! All I did was run 30 ounces of fuel through the 125 at 5 turns out and about 3800 RPM prior to first flight. That engine purrs! It fired immediately and never even hinted of dying during break-in.
For the first flight, I only tuned the engine for about 8400 RPM at WOT, which was still very bloody rich (should be around 8900-9200), and the low needle hadn't even been touched yet. Even with the engine way undertuned, the vertical was not only unlimited, but constant speed, and this is at 6800 feet of elevation!!
Anyway, my CG is at 3-1/8" on an empty tank, and with the larger tank up front, I could definitely tell that it was noseheavy on a full tank because it took a good deal of backpressure to get it off the ground. Other than that, it was a good first flight, but it had a hard time in KE flight, dropped a bit inverted, and the rolls didn't look terribly axial - and I did the rates per the instructions, which calls for differential. Snaps were nice, though. Still, it wasn't that bad and there was a good deal of bumpy wind today, so I can't make assumptions just yet.
The landing was a breeze and the stall was very predictable and slow. Overall, I can tell that this will be a fun little plane!
One thing that I noticed was that the balsa at the bottom of the fuse, right at the back two corners of the plywood exhaust cavity, had cracked, so I will be adding another 1/2 ounce in ply reinforcement down there. No biggie - I am way overpowering this thing and kind of expected to need some beefing up.

Great Job bodywerks, sounds like a success. Everything sounds like the CG needs scooted back some, but use caution. Seems the further back you go the more it floats on landings. My 90 is powerful, but not like yours. The down lines need to be nursed somewhat, I've heard of bad things happening to this plane when it goes ballistic. Have fun !

Ha! I think this is the video that Rocco was telling me about today!. He thought the power-to-weight was pretty sick, and then he saw mine with the 125. Density altitude today was probably around 9500 feet and the engine is still rich and the plane still accelerates vertically! Nice flying and video editing, BTW!

After changing the 90 ST's prop to a 14/4W and CG finalized at 31/4 that helped things quite a bit for landing the bird. It now can handle some throttle for final approach and greases the runway much better. Five flights Sunday and it keeps getting better. I did my longest torque roll with it this weekend, about two minutes of slow rotation, dropped the throttle for a tail slide and flew out inverted.
Joy.

Looks great! What fuel tank did you end up going with and how did you install it? Good luck on the maiden.

Thanks! Well, I went with a Dubro 14oz. Square Tank. I had to cut the former where the tank normally fits and then re-glue two pieces of wood back onto it slightly wider making a bigger hole for the tank to fit in. I also put a lot of foam padding around the tank.

It ran great during run in of the engine 2 weeks ago. Yesterday I was going to take it up but for some reason the engine wouldn't stay running. It ran at full throttle, but not that great and when it would come to an idle, it would cut out. I couldn't figure out what it was. When I pulled the cowling off I noticed the fuel line to the carb was empty. I tried priming it by putting my thumb over the carb and turning the prop but the fuel had a hard time coming to the carb and when it did finally come up to the carb it would drain back as soon as I took my thumb off of the carb. To me, this seems like an air leak in the fuel system somewhere but not sure. So I was going to replace everything including the tank and quick fill fixture, hopefully this will fix it. I might go with the Great Planes 14oz. tank this time, not sure.

What modification were required for the Sullivan 12 oz tank. I'm really happy with the airplane but noticed right away that the supplied tank was way too small for a Saito 100.

Honestly les40, just about any tank you put in there from 10oz and over will probably need some modification to the former inside as the hole provided is pretty small unless you can find a long slender tank. It isn't much of a big deal, just cut the two sides with a dremel or similar tool and glue on two new pieces of plywood wider apart. Many of us have done it with no apparent problems. Believe me, I am not one to want to modify something but in this case, it is hard to get around it. I can take a picture of the inside if you want to get an idea of what needs to be done if you are interested. One guy on this post actually mounted a 480oz. or something tank and mounted it in the wing saddle area. I don't know if I would suggest that but anything can be done if you have the know-how. Good Luck with your tank selection, let us know how things progress...

I had to dremel about 3/16" off that former to get it to fit. The nice thing about it is the stopper fits almost dead-center into the cutout in the firewall. Not quite enough though - I ended up getting fuel into the fuse from whatever the carb and crankcase spit out, so I suggest sealing that hole off with silicone and remember to put a piece of fuel tube on that crankcase spout and route it away from the firewall.

Thanks. Somewhere I saw a fuel tank advertised that you heat up with your heat gun to mold it to the shape you want. Does anybody know which one that is? I'm going down to the Hobby Barn this weekend and will ask them and see which tank they have in stock looks like it will be a good fit. I want to modify the bulkheads as little as possible.

Still not sure whether to go with the Saito 125 or 100. I fly at 3000 ft. altitude and temps in the 100s. Every airplane I've built so far has had dissappointing vertical including a Funtana 90 with the Saito 125 on it, running 30% nitro. I'll probably try the 100 initially. I want to compete in the Basic IMAC class with this airplane. I competed with the earlier version and it was very capable with an O.S. .46 AX on it as well as an Irvine .46 Mk II.

Badfish --- The video is cool. You have great thumbs. What muffler do you have on that "100"??
I have a Saito 82 with a stock muffler and it sounds like a "Moped 80". I would like to get something similar to what you have - any suggestions??

Nice vid Badfish!!! This is one fun plane to tumble!
Les40, if you haven't got the engine yet, go with the 125. P2W and wingloading will definitely not be a problem! I fly at 6800 feet with density altitudes near 9,000 feet lately, and the vertical on this thing is accelerated from a hover! Yet it flies light and lands like a trainer.

in the one shot with with the fast fly-by's it's just a 90' header to stock muffler. I actually ended up breaking the 90' header that day. it came loose on one flight which must have stressed it. I tightened it up and a few flights later it broke off. In the shots with the high-alpha ke's when it was bright out I was using a slimeline pitts. sounds nice but I've been trying to lighten it up lately. the pitts is 2oz heavier than stock. I'm going to try just a header to some aerotrend flexible exaust tubing.
thanks for your kind words.

Badfish - If you try just the header attached to flexible exaust tubing, how will you attach the fuel pressure line back to the fuel tank? Can the Saito run without it? (I'm still learning)

Thanks

I was just tinkering with that now. turns out the header is too straight and won't work out so I'm putting the pitts back on it for now. I'm running a perry oscillating pump which syphons fuel from the tank. the pump has a check ball inside it and everytime the engine fires the ball moves back and forth creating fuel pressure for the carb. I mounted my tank on the cg and is too far away from the carb for the muffler pressure to work well.
