Status: offline 		ok! got a lot done today! (as much my supplies would allow)

all the servos are in, and all the control surfaces are linked, and centered. i managed to just barely fit those three huge servos in snugly. i also installed a on/off switch for the battery - mainly cuz just i had one.

now, hopefully the plane will balance ok.

tomorrow after school ill be making an expedition to the local hobby shop up in King NC to get:
- a spinner
- some props
- fuel lines (colorful!)
- a fuel tank
- a rx battery
- maybe even a spektrum ar500
- hardware (skrews/nuts such) to mount my motor and motor mount

moving along smoothly!

Status: offline 		Hey yall! its almost ready for a maiden!

i got all the electrics in (except RX - anyone selling a Ar500 cheap? ), installed the motor and added a 6oz. tank. ran the throttle contorl rod (that took a long time to get right)

now i gotta tighten up the covering, add some griptape for handlauch, balance it out, and a few other minor things. if all goes well, im looking at a maiden Sunday. 

here she b.

Status: offline 		yah. i was thinking about that (ive heard of a lot of planes killed my flutter)

but i dont have any covering. and im not about to go buy a $12 roll just for that purpose. can I use clear packing tape do you think? it would be prettymuch invisible, and sticks to the covering really well. i think ill try that.

anyone know where i can find a good online  GC calculator or something that will work it out for me?

Status: offline 		Clear tape will work fine if you clean any oil/grease off first.....I just checked my shrike 10 plans and the recommended cg range is about 4 1/2 to 5 inches from the leading edge, measured at the fuse sides..... that's a good starting point ..

Status: offline 		My orange and gray plans built one flew great today. About 53 deg. F, and a brisk wind blowing right down the runway. This one sure was a lot better handling than my old ARF that had to have a ton of lead in its butt to balance.

Status: offline 		ok. the wingspan on my shrike is just a little over 35" so i think that it is the .10 size.

the CG seems like its going to be about 3/4" noseheavy. but that shouldnt require too much tailwieght.

ill give the packing tape over the hinge lines ida a try.

The factory CG on mine is 6.125" aft of the LE, measured at the fuse.

Your 35 incher is exactly 80% the size of my 43.5 incher.

80% of 6.125 is 4.9"

Try that for a start.

I balanced mine 1/16 forward of the factory CG, and it flew real stable and had plenty of elevator authority. I don't see much "up" trim on the elevator, either, after the first flights. Remember that this is a delta wing, and it bleeds energy in turns. Going into a turn you have to be right on the elevator or power up, or you'll lose altitude in a hurry. Land level and fast.

Status: offline 		alright! maiden successful!  today i took er down to the local field (RAMS) and there were a bunch of other guys there all flying gassers.  there was even a guy there with 2 turbine jets! man those were fast!
so i ended up having to put 2.5 oz. of lead in its butt to make it fly. other than that, it was great! no torque roll of takeoff. only took a minute to trim it out (i had my friend move the trims for me - i was a nervous shaky mess! lol )  i greased it in for the nicest landing of my life! (second go around though - first time was a little too long)   i couldnt be happier!

so now, the motor needs some fine tuning. i also need to  adjust my elevators control rod, because it took almost all the up trim i had.  lastly, i need to get into the wing, and reenforce where the wing meets the fuse. the wings are just a little flexy... im worried about more speed!

HERES THE KILLER: my dad coudnt figure out how to work t he video camera! there is no video! AAGHR!
so next time around ill have to take pics, and video.

all things considered, a really good day!

Status: offline 		using an APC 8 x 5 on my magnum pro .25 with a regular muffler thingy. plenty of power - but i wanna go faster!

i plan on moving up to an 8 x 8 once im more comfortable with flying this bullet!

does anyone know where i can find something like an online motor calc. that will tell me the best prop for speed?  or does anyone wanna tell me what their magic prop is?

also, i dont have a tach. anyone know how to make one? (im not about to shell out for one just so i can know how many RPMs im turning for no good reason....

Status: offline 		It's nice to know how many rpm's you're turning so you can pick the best prop to get the speed you want. I planted a Picco 60 in my shrike 10 and I found I get the best overall performance running a 10x6 prop at 22k rpm's loaded (on the ground).

Status: offline 		This is my 3rd shrike 10...my first 2 had an os .32 with a macs mini tuned pipe with an 8x8 prop and it was unreal how fast it was and could have been even faster with a full blown header and pipe...it had a very high speed landing and usually went home after 1 filght to be repaired..this latest has a cox/rjl conquest .15 with a macs header and pipe and a 7x6 apc prop...Im also trying a 6.5x6.5 soon ...I'm getting almost 20,000 with 30% fuel and a 7x6..

Status: offline 		I was at my local hobby shop tonight, looking at all of the planes on the wall. Mostly ARF's. They usually don't have anything I'm interested in (kits), and I have to have them order it for me. However, I noticed a box that I've seen numerous times with no label on it. I finally pulled it out and noticed that it was a Lanier Shrike 40! It looked like it had been sitting there for about 15 years. I opened the box and everything seems to be in good shape! It was marked for $80. The box was in bad shape and they obviously weren't selling it to anybody. I asked the owner if he would take $40 for it. He said $55. I put it back since I was already spending quite a bit in there. But now that I've been sitting here thinking about it, I'm going to go back and pick it up tomorrow. What's a good motor for this bird? I'm thinking the OS .55AX or even the Jett .60LX.

Guys do all kinds of crazy stuff with Shrikes. Big engines are very common. With a light 46 right up against the firewall and all the other parts shoved way in the back (not like on the plans) it will balance without lead and weigh around 4 pounds or less. At that weight it's a rocket, with unlimited vertical and it will fly right of your hand at launch.

With heavier engines, it gets harder to balance, heavier, and hand launch starts to depend on a good wind to help. I've seen a lot of 60+ powered ones that wouldn't hand launch and needed dollies for takeoff, which are prohibited by most clubs. If you can keep it light, it's fun to fly with no bad habits. When they get over 5 pounds they start to get unpredictable, especially at approach speeds.

If you've never had one before, I highly recommended you trace out all the parts from the carriers and copy the plans, so you can build more in the future. You'll get hooked on em, I guarantee it. It's a fast, fun build and even more fun to fly.

$55 is a good price. I think the one I bought years ago from Tower was $35- $40, and they are going for over $100 on ebay when you can find them.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the tips! Last night, I really was regretting that I didn't pick it up. Today at work, I was sweating it thinking that somebody was going to buy it out from under me, even though it's probably been there for a decade. The hobby shop I frequent, is jam packed with stuff. I really need to go back, take my time and see what else is in there. I saw an old Yard Dart too. Anyways, I went back and sure enough, it was still there! I picked it up for $55. There's no sales tax in Anchorage. I brought it home and opened it up. Everything looks like it's in great shape. The box looks bad. There was paperwork inside from 1997. It's like a trip back in time! I started working on it after dinner and made some progress. I'm almost done with the fuselage. I need to run out tomorrow and get a motor mount. I want to get it set up before I glue the firewall in or start on the wings. I have an OS .46FX that needs a home. I think this is it! I'm going to build it without landing gear and just hand launch it. Here's some pics.

You'd be surprised then! I've lived in and flown RC in New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas and now Alaska. Never have I been or lived anywhere that has better weather for flying RC, than Alaska. We fly all winter long. My club has a fun fly every other week. We also pack the snow down on the runway. So, you can use skis or wheels. Anchorage has pretty moderate temperatures since we're close to the water. It's in the 20's for most of the winter. However, the wind rarely blows at all. If it does, it's like 5 mph. It is almost always dead calm. It's easy to stay warm and these little planes fly great up here! It's awesome. People are always flying these little foamie, indoor planes out at the field. There's nothing to blow them around. One day this past fall, the wind was blowing about 5 or 6 mph. Everybody was complaining that it was too windy. Ugh. I moved up here from Oklahoma. A day in Oklahoma where the wind ISN'T blowing more than 20 mph, is a rare day and a good one to go fly! HA! They're spoiled. Anyways, this is a surprisingly good place to fly. I fly for a living too. It's a fantastic place to do that too! I'll probably maiden my Shrike after Christmas sometime.
