I believe the CG range is from the leading edge of the main wing spar to about 1/16" behind it. I fly mine right in the middle of the spar, I like the way it sets up for landing that way. Hope that helps..

Yes at the main spar. Also remember to balance upside down, I'm sure you knew that though. I did it right side up the first time and was lucky to bring it home in one piece.

Hi all, I just got my 4* 60 kit from Tower yesterday. I can't wait to start building it.
Based on what I've read in this thread and elsewhere on RCU, the mods I want to do are a cowl from Precision Fiberglass, wingtips, wheel pants, change the nylon pushrods to steel, use Dubro super strength landing gear and fabricate a belly tray to eliminate the gap between the wings and fuselage.
I am trying to choose an engine for this plane. This is my 3rd RC kit, so I'm not a newbie builder, but I am a newbie pilot.
Can this engine be mounted sideways so the exhausts exits the bottom of the cowl? I don't want to spend so much money for a 4-stroke, even though that seems to be what most people are putting in this plane. What is the disadvantage to using a 2-stroke?

James, Either type engine will do fine, they both have their pro' and con's. It's more of a personal preference. The only real difference is that 4 stroke motors have more torque and allow you to spin bigger, more efficient, props and 2 strokes rev higher which could result in higher speeds. I have had a number of motors on mine, RCV.91, Saito1.00, YS1.10, back to a Saito1.00, OS.91, and now a Saito1.25. Granted I only had the .91 on for a short time, I do prefer the 4 strokes myself. This plane isn't designed for speed but is capable of some cool stuff and the 4 strokes just make it that much more fun. But like I said, this is from my experience and is strictly my opinion. By the way, I am completing a long over due mod to the turtle deck, I replaced the 1/8"X5/16" stringers with hard wood rather than the balsa ones that come with it. Then I replaced the F-4T and F-5T formers with 1/8" ply. This is a very weak point in, not the type that will cause it to come apart in flight. But rather they have a tendency to snap constantly while sitting in a cradle attaching the wing or doing repairs. I just traced them out onto the ply and cut them out. Or you can just sheet it. Here are a couple pics of mine ready to recover.

I love building small free flight kits, so I know what you mean about snapping stringers... I do it all the time when I'm holding a plane trying to sand a small part or something.
I was thinking about sheeting the turtle deck for added strength and to protect the stringers. Would the best way to do this be to take 1/16th of an inch off all the turtle deck formers and cut the stringer notches 1/16th inch deeper, then use 1/16th sheeting over the deck?

Also - I hope I don't spark a major debate here, but is the SuperTigre a good engine in general? I read, among other things, that people either love them or hate them and that the factory carbs aren't very good on them... My impression is that it is a good engine that needs some tweaking. Is the O.S. 75AX worth an extra $90?

I have had two supertigers and they are a bit touchy but they work wonderful. the only thing you first must do is get rid of the plug and get a fox plug or an os. the supertiger plug will go bad very shortly.

I don't know much about the ST engines other than waht you explained, either you like them or hate them. They are very touchy and as mentioned, replace the plug right off or use the stock one for break in then replace. I would get a extra for sure.
As far as sheeting the TD, once you put it together you will see that there is room for the sheeting without the need for remove much material other than at the very rear, the sheeting should be easily applied, I soak mine sheeting with a 50/50 mixture of water and ammonia using a spray bottle or brush, it will become very bendable without cracking. Then put in on the TD and use rubber bands to hold it in place until it dries. Then you can trim it to fit and glue. Makes it a breeze to apply sheeting.

For those 4* owners who added wheel pants - which brand/type did you use? Fiberglass Specialties sells a pair for $32 for the 4*60. A little pricey, but they could be worth it. Has anyone used these or any other wheel pants from this supplier?
If I use Dubro super strength gear, will wheel pants designed around the stock gear still work? I would think they could be easily modified if necessary.

I flew a 4* 60 for a while on a ST 75. it was a great combo. but then again I love the Four Star series and I love Supre tigers so for me it was just perfect. some where near ecstasy. It did come out tail heavy as others have said, I did replace the gear with a fiber glass one, don't remember where i got it. and should have changed the push rods. the kit comes with solder clevises on rudder and elevator. I learned that I can't solder, and no longer have the plane
The ST 75 is well worth the money. the OS at 90.00 more is just a waste of 90 bucks IMO. ST 75 with about a 13X8 did fine for me. I live in cool weather at sea level and got nearly unlimited vertical. The ST will need an OS #8 plug. it seems to like that one. Dont worry about some people saying that they can't get it to run. Some people can ruin a crow bar too. Build it and fly it and you will very quickly learn why so many people rate the four star so high in the ever popular 'whats the best second plane' and the 'favorite plane' threads. The simple answer is cause with the right motor up front, like the ST 75, it will do almost any thing you want it to and still behave like a trainer when you ask it to. Four Star 60 and ST 75 are a match made in heaven.
