One of the local clubs did the auction deal a couple of times, and from what I could see, it was pretty much a flop. I think they have since discontinued it. I think one problem was that the high end stuff would never get up to the reserve level, and the low end stuff was junk that no one wanted anyway. The auctioneer was a professional, but the crowd was not very big, less than 100.

And auctions take a LOOOONG time.
A suggestion: hold a very SHORT auction at the end of the swap meet. And end the swap meet EARLY, by 12 or 1, because they tend to go on for too long, most of the stuff is long gone after an hour, and if an auction is going to be successful at all, it has to happen before everybody LEAVES.
Don't have a reserve: make it simpler. The owner may place one bid, anytime. It works. This way people are not guessing at the reserve, the auctioneer does not need to even know the reserve. Keeps things simple. The owner still pays the comission, if there is one.
Trust me...this moves things along, fast.

Yeah, that's the ticket. I think an auction would definitely be a plus , a well thought out auction, with the correct timing and presentation.
