I see mekp or mepk ( which way is right?) mentioned in several discussions. How is it different from methyl ethyl ketone (mek) that comes in gallons and is available at a local building material retailer?

mekp is a catalyst used for curing some polyester resins. I do not know of any uses revolving around a model glow fuel

MEKP make the ignition lag reduced in the model dieselengine and need reduced compression and run fast.

MEKP means Methylene Ethylene Ketone Peroxid.

Do not add more than 3% in dieselfuel, too much make difficult to regulate compression and the dieselengine will run hot.

There was a fairly long discussion here a while ago about using it in diesel fuels. Be careful with it in fuels or as a catalyst because it's deadly on your eyes. You have roughly 5 seconds to start washing it out before you go blind.

Rather than risk the danger of MEPK and deal with the expense, I suggest you try Amsoil brand cetane enhancer. A study of the USA required specification sheet shows that this particular brand of cetane enhancer is 100% Octyl Nitrate. Much safer, not a restricted substance like Amyl Nitrate, and works very well. I am using it at 2% by volume in homebrew diesel fuel for small (.061) and large (.40) engines with success.

Hey Mavi91, thanks for the suggestion. Don't have a clue where to get the Amsoil locally. I'm trying to avoid mail order of fuels, but I really don't want to use the mekp after finding out some of its dangers.

Wayne,

I ordered mine on the Internet. They do have dealers at a few locations, so it is worth checking to see if one is near you. The stuff is so harmless that there is no hazmat charge to ship it. The ordinary shipping costs do increase the total price, but when you think of how long the bottle will last you, it doesn't matter much.
