I flew the Yak back at the CASA Spring Sizzle back on Memorial Day. This is a first class foamy/stiffy. I was flying in 15 mph winds. The plane flew great, especially for a foamy. I'd highly recommend this model. As the organizer for the CASA Spring Sizzle, I hope Copperhead chooses to come back to our event during the Memorial Day weekend 2006. They were a great vendor at the event and showed off fantastic planes and equipment. I've seen their planes at both of my local clubs - CASA and DCRC in the DC area and they offer the best profile foamies on the market hands down. If you want a profile plane, get it. It flies great and is very capable. They offer great support and are hard-core fliers. They do a great job.

Dion

Have you flown the Extra Yet? Did you find out which prop is best? The 10x4.7 or the 11x4.7
I just got my Exrta Stiffy and being a die hard OMP fan, I need to hear your review.

Where is the video?

The plane looks outstanding.

Thanks

They fly great. I flew a couple at SEFF. You will have a ball with it down low because you wont be worried about busting it up when you dork it.

I'm using a Himax 2816 outrunner with a 12X3.8 sf prop. This will rip this plane around. It hovered my 25oz Katana Mini.

Me too. This plane flys great. It's a good alternative to the balsa "mini funtana" and "mini edge" planes. Roughly the same weight and wing area so you can just swap the gear over.

I woulnd't use four HS 55's though. Both my ailerons stripped out in less than an hour and I needed to put in HS 56's. IMO, the HS 55's are good for the tail (lighter) but the ailerons are heavy and need beefier gears like the karbonite HS 56's.

That little Himax is a monster and I like spinning the larger prop. With the Tanic 1550s flight times are in the 12-14 minute range as well. Well, my date for tonight just cancelled, so I'll be putting mine together. I read the destructions and it looks like a super easy build. It's been a while since I have been this excited about a foamy build.

Sorry I haven't updated the thread in a few days. The full build only took me a few hours. Here are the final steps.

Lay out the pocket positions for the aileron servos. Cut the pockets with a sharp hobby knife making sure you don’t poke through the top of the wing. Temporarily install the servos, servo arms and quick links for push rod and control horn alignment. Mark the aileron control horn position making sure the pushrods are 90 degrees to the ailerons. At your mark, cut a slit in the foam to accommodate the aileron control horns. Epoxy in place. Use blue tape to secure the ailerons at the neutral position.

Make a 45 degree bend in the aileron pushrods one inch from the z-bends. Trial fit the rods and cut a control horn clearance notch in the wing to allow for full throw. Secure the servos in place at there tabs with two drops of hot glue. Attach the servo arms and rods.

Cut the pockets for the elevator and rudder servos paying close attention to the measurements given. Temporarily install the servos and mark the respective control horn positions making sure the pushrods are as close to 90 degrees as possible. Make sure the control horn holes are even with the hinge line for maximum throw.

Cut slots in the elevator and rudder to accommodate the control horns. Copperhead provides a detailed example with pics for installing these horns on their site. http://www.copperheadaviation.com/absolutefm/afmviewfaq.asp?faqid=30 Glue the horns in place and remove the servos.

Unlike most foam airplanes, Copperhead hides most of the electronics from view giving their planes a cleaner look. Cut a v-grove in the fuselage to accommodate and hide the servo wires and extensions. This is done with a razor blade cutting a 45 degree line in either side of the bottom of the fuselage than pulling back the wedge of foam. The have a detailed instructions for cutting the v on their site as well. http://www.copperheadaviation.com/absolutefm/afmviewfaq.asp?faqid=43

Using a hot pushrod, clear a pathway for you servo wires from the v grove to the servo cutouts. Cut the exit hole for the servo extensions and reinstall the servos. Hot glue the v grove back in place.

Install the motor with the supplied hardware. I added the graupner lightweight spinner that copperhead sells as an option. Solder the male Deans on the speed control and the female on the Lipo. Connect the motor to the ESC and place the supplied Velcro on the back of the ESC. Stretch out the ESC and mark where you want to place the other half of the Velcro on the fuse to secure the ESC.

Cut two pieces of Velcro for attaching you lipo to the fuse. Try to tuck the pack as close to the wing as possible. Enough Velcro is supplied so you may slide the pack forward and aft to fine tune your CG.

That's it, ready for flight. Stay tuned for full RCU Review with vids and flight report coming soon!

I was trying to save my flight comments for the full review, but in a nutshell it's one sweet flying plane. No bad tendencies, tracks perfect upright and inverted. Does all the tricks in the book, by the book.

Am happy.

All I need to do is install my servos and she's ready to fly. I sure love building a plane that requires soo little assembly and looks soo good when finished

The full review is up. I'm still working on my own videos if it ever is above 30 degs, but there's is there for right now. Once I produce my own video I'll add it to the RCU review.

Enjoy!

Finished my extra Stiffee yak the other day and was waiting for a break in the weather to fly it. Take off was about ten feet. I added no trim whatsoever. After about thirty seconds of flying, the motor cut out and I found myself in a bad way but managed to bring it in with no damage. I took the battery (s) and speed control from another plane and never had any problem with them. Here is the information and I would appreciate any suggestions to cure this problem. The motor was not at full throttle when it cut out. I was trying to do knife edge so I was putting in some rudder.

KOKAM batteries, 15 C discharge, 3 cell light poly…first one I tried 1500 mah, second one—2000 mah.

Hacker A20 20L, outrunner, 11x4.7 prop, astroflight meter said max amps pulled was 21 at around 200 watts.

4 h-55 servos (I checked for binding)

Phoenix speed control 25 with the following settings:

9 volt cutoff
moderate overcurrent threshold
soft brake no delay
auto calibrated throttle
standard advanced timing
hard cutoff
soft start

As soon as I got to the plane I felt the motor, speed control and battery and none of them was past slightly warm. When I got home, I recharged the batteries and held the plane while I played with the throttle and hit my snap roll button and ever so often the motor would shut off again but the motor, speed control or battery never got past a slight warm feeling.. Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.
Roy

Roy,

Would the motor would cut off if you hit the Snap switch?

Ken,
It was kind of random.
I would advance the throttle and it would cut off or I would be moving the control surfaces one or two at a time and advance the throttle and it would cut off. Also, I could let the motor run at full throttle on a fully charged battery and after less than a minute, the motor would cut off without moving a control surface, which is definately not right.
Thanks,
Roy

I just bought an Extra Stiffy and am going to be using the Himax 2816-1220. I saw on the websight that I need a 2220 mah pack because the Himax draws a lot of current. Has anyone used the new 20 "twenty" polyquest packs with this motor. I would think it would scream.

Any imput. I want balistic.

A couple of years ago I stopped using Thunder Power batteries because I had no luck with them. (longevity) I switched over to Kokam.

I recently had a voltage problem on my new Extra Stiffy yak . The ESC would shut down the motor because the volts dropped below 9. After asking about it in a earlier post in this thread, it was suggested to me that I switch from Kokam to Thunder Power because Thunder Power could hold their voltage even though the amp draw was higher. Got Two Thunder Power batteries, charged it up, and to my amazement, no more problem. I was really amazed with the readings I saw on my AstroFlight meter compared to the Kokam. I could get the 1320 to cut out but I would never fly it that hard.

Just some trivia:

Thunder Power
1320 MAH: 3.2 oz
2100 MAH: 5.1 oz
Kokam
910 MAH: 3.0 oz
1500 MAH: 4.1 oz
2000 MAH: 6.2 oz

I upped my my mille-amps and saved some weight to boot.

If the longevity is better then it used to be Im a convert !

Roy

Anyone got a weight on thiers? The advertised 19oz. seems heavy for a 36" span foamy. Of course the proof is in the flying.
