I was just reading a thead talking about the problems of a blade strike, and how it screwed up the whole heli, well, I was thinking, why don't you use some high tensile string (heh I have some stuff that goes in aircraft tires, that'll hold up a few pounds!) and secure the bottom set of blades to the shaft, then you'ld NEVER have a blade strike and it'd add some air restance (just a little) that would counter the flybar's effect, what do you think of that?

You mean like strut it with one end to the blade tip and one end to some kind of collar around the axle? Id say that could work, sure would make tracking them easier. Try it and tell us what you think of it.
The only time I had a blade strike was when I had a rough landing though. Did any of you actually have one of those in mid flight?
Man, thats one hot lama! (that sounds SO wrong..) What did you do with the rotors and stuff? Stick on some carbon printed monocote? Looks utterly professional.
I was planning on doing the same to the tail except for aluminum I use a 5mm carbon tube. I have my doubts on the tail mount though. With the unfortunate event that it comes down tail first, it will crack off the screw holes due to the huge leverage, wich means getting a new chassis.
But I must say, the smaller canopy, thinner tail and carbon trimmings make it look worth 100 dollars more. Great job. Cant wait till my new parts get through the mail.

You're right about that. It was a choice I made to go with the lighter bracket, and to keep busy so I wouldn't have to help with hanging Christmas decorations. The recycled picture below shows the way I was going to mount it originally, putting screws through the frame. Stronger, but heavier.
My plan was to use a CF tail boom. The arrow was something my son found in our yard a couple years ago and he thought it was CF. When he brought it in from the garage and I saw it was aluminum, I almost stopped the project. Then I thought about it again, and aluminum on the Lama seemed pretty cool. I was going to take the graphics off the arrow, then decided I liked how it looks with them. The assembly weighs about the same as the stock boom.
[edit] Oops, I almost forgot. I added some servo tape between the bracket and motor. I can pick the heli up and shake it a little by the tail boom. It's a little stronger than it looks.

Thanks. Here's a couple pics flying in my living room. The tricky part here is ..... I took the pictures while I was flying. Not great photography, but pretty good piloting.

Well I learned a trick. Get the thing to ballance on the ground effect about a foot off the ground and all trimmed out and you can put the Tx down and go take a piss and it'll still be hovering in the same place when you come back.

I highly doubt that. Just the mere draft that comes off of someone moving to go to the bathroom, makes it drift off. Even helicopters with heading hold on all channels drift off perfectly level.
Someone please make a video of it flying in a BIG space, like a gym hall or just plain outdoors. Waiting on being able to try that out myself is driving me nuts.
