I just put in the BB motors and they are smooth. I did the two AA cell break in and then installed them and flew. I think they have a lot more power and seem to run longer and for sure they run cooler. I need to get a IR thermometer so I can take some measurements.

My stock motors seemed to loose there punch real fast. I fly about 3 batts through it a day five days a week and buy the time I got my BB motors in the stocks just seemed to have lost there umph. The BB's brought it back better than new.

I have three battery packs, the stock 800 mah 10c, 800 mah 12c and a 850 mah 15c. the 850 really makes it move.

I've gotten pretty good at flying the Lama but I keep chopping the stock tail off. I'll flying it pretty fast forward and go into a sharp left hand turn to bring it back and WHAP WHAP the blades hit the tail.

I have the extreem blades on. Any thoughts on how to cure this?

gregkabob....................You are pushing the Lama V3 way beyond it's design limitations, The Lama V3, wasn't designed to be flown fast, or sharp banking turns, maybe it is time you moved up to the Honey Bee 3 or something that was designed to be flown and not something designed to putz around the house. I dont mean to sound mean but I think it's the truth, if anyone disagrees please let me know.

Yes, I'm getting ready to move up. Looking into a TREX 450. I'll slow it down and fly it within it's envelope. It's still a blast to fly.

gregkabob..................I'll agree with you they are a hoot to fly, I have 2 V3's. At my age, I am content with just buzzing around the living/room and scaring the cats and wife

Happy landings

The Next Step.........

After the lama, I went and got a T-rex 450x, It was SO twitchy it scared me stupid so I put heavier paddles (ones for a zoom) and two collet weights on the fly bar, That changed it from scary into just VERY VERY responsive ( So responsive that I often couldn't regain control when it got away from me, But its OK, The ground would catch it every time, ).

I then looked for a smaller Helli to use in the garden, So I got a fixed pitch RC SYSTEM Minicopter v2, This was SO much fun, It flies well and (to an extent) bounces well too,

Then wanting a collective pitched Helli I got a Hummingbird cp....... that was total crap, (Anyone reading this, Avoid it like you'd avoid amoebic dysentery, It handles like a .....erm...well, like a ....erm... , It doesn't handle at all, It was as responsive as a stoner just after pay day. That was the big problem !!!!!).

Still wanting a cheap cp Helli, I then got a Twister cp, This flies OK(ish) but It didn't matter what settings I changed the tail still randomly drifts and its so twitchy (Even with 2 collets on ether end of the fly bar)

Next was a second hand mk1 MS Hornet, God this is an amassing little Helli stable as hell when you want and still SOOOOO controllable (It was almost like it was reading my mind and doing what I thought It should), Then I crashed it, Fixed it, Realised how expensive MS parts cost and haven't had the nerve to fly it outside since

All this time I was still flying and crashing the T-Rex, Every time I ditched it I broke stuff, Every time I broke stuff I replaced it with better stuff, So It was starting to get a bit "Blinged up" This caused the next problem, I was starting to get too attached to Its carbon and alloy prettiness to risk trying anything risky, So

Off to the hobby shop again, This time I got a twister 3d expert (The one with the brushless motor), I put all cheap RX kit in it (RC Systems gyro, My original align speed controller, lipo's and a futaba R136F receiver I upgraded away from on the T-Rex), This thing flies really nicely. It does roughly what it's told and it hovers where I put it, With the bits I had laying about It only cost about £200 to get in the air and I love it, Its not as "frantic" or powerfully as the T-rex but its fun and If I ditch it I don't feel too worried about damage because parts are so cheap .

So, In Conclusion (and my opinion),
If you want a cheap CP Helli to learn on, Forget all the separate tail motor "TOYS" and get a twister 3d, There isn't many upgrades available for it but its a good next step from the lama.
If you want to spend a bit more get a T-Rex, Its a little bigger and the build quality is much better, Over the year I've had mine I've learned a few lessons, Like, If everyone says "put a 401 gyro on it" there must be a good reason for that (like the fact it really does works better than any of the others I tryed) and get the best spec kit you can, because In the end with all the available upgrades you WILL end up with an 450SE (or above) spec bird, LOL.
If you have shed load of cash then get the hornet

The solution to your problem is simple, if you want to modify and keep flying your Lama. Replace swash, lower & upper hubs with aluminum parts, and shorten your stabilizer bar. You can modify your own stabilizer bar or buy a 3rd party pre-fab.

PoppyDon, I am almost offended by your statement that the Lama is not good for anything but "putzing". Granted they cannot handle any wind, but with a few mods you can fly this little heli as fast and bank and turn as fast as your skill level will allow. My lama will handle any input I give it without incident, providing I keep it away from the walls. I really need to put some video up for you guys, my Lama is a different heli than when I pulled it out of the box.

Also my next heli after the Lama was an ESKY HBK2 - LOVING IT!!!!! Very nice cp heli, very nice price.

All thanks for your replies!

Mayer, I have upgraded to all aluminum parts except for the blade holders. The Lama has Extreme blades, Extreme landing skids, and BB motors. Will upgrading to the aluminum blade holders help along with modding/repacing the stabilizer bar? I know you replace yours with the the Blade bar? How short did you make it?

As for my next chopper I want something that I can fly outside. There is no way I can fly the lama outside as I live in Oklahoma and as the song says "when the wind comes blowing down the plain" they mean it. The times of no wind or little wind in Okieville are few and far between so I want a chopper that can be flown in some wind. I been out to watch the locals and a lot are flying Trex's. I seen the the 450's fly in some pretty good winds and they held steady (or it was really good piloting skills). Also I'm looking at availability of parts both mail order and local which there is.

Reman, thanks for your reviews of the choppers you have flown and I'll look into twister.

I'm still having loads of fun flying the Lama and everytime someone new comes into my off and see's the chopper sitting on the table they ask about it and how it flys. I have a big open bay outside my office where I fly it so I have to give them a demo. I've got three of them interested in buying Lama's.

Again guys, thanks for all the help and replies.

Mayer, I forgot to ask. I know your very pleased with the King 2. That's another that I've considered as a next step. How does it fly outside?

The problem I find with flying in wind is that if the Helli is leaning into the wind when it gusts the Helli drops quite dramatically, the same thing goes for leaning out of the wind, It shoots up like a homesick angel, with the constant cyclic corrections I need to do to keep the Helli in one place its always trying to clime or drop, Is there a sports hall or a school with a indoor sports area you could try to "borrow" locally to you?

Anybody ever use the Lama transmitter for something else besides the Lama? I want to buy a receiver for it and use it for a plane.

mayer4321.......... my intent wasnt to offend, sorry about that. I am simply saying IMHO
that the Lama V3 was designed as a beginers helicopter. One to train in nose in hover, throttle control and the basic movements of heli flying, I have read different forums about the CNC upgrades, and people usuallly change back to the stock parts. I enjoy "putzing" around the family room with airspeed as fast as a fast walk! I guess different strokes for different foks. I would like to see a Lama V3 doing banked turns, and fast forward flight. I dont think at my age I could keep up with that Anyway best to you and happy flying,

PoppyDon
