Well I am finally getting started. I have a cowl and canopy heading my way. once I get those I will be able to finalize the diameter of the fuse. I have been making some early drawings in 2d.

Aha! Success!

I am still tweaking things on this but now you can see a nice smooth transition outline for the area that has been cut out of the fuse to accomodate the wing. Before, it was very irregular with the outside edge of the sheeting skin darting in and out at random. Shown in the pic are stringers and some sheeting on these "mini" formers. I will also add stringers and sheeting to the outside of the mini formers. It took a lot of thinking on my part to figure this all out but hopefully it's worth it!

Cheers,

John

Looking good Brent. One question: It appears as though you have drawn one side of the fuse and it is aligned up the middle reference line. However, once you move it into its final position, you will have to taper the aft section inward correct? If so, the angle will shorten the length of your fuse and throw off some of its relationships with other parts. Maybe I'm missing something?

At long last, I've finally got everything picture perfect with my plans from the aft part of the canopy to the firewall. I can honestly say it is picture perfect. While it may not look that radically different from some of the pics I posted a couple weeks ago even, it really has been overhauled. I took a lot of time to make sure the thing will go together as easily as possible without sacrificing congruity and precision. I'm even starting to like Autocad again! Talk about a love/hate relationship!

Here she is in all her rendered glory (even starting to figure that out too). Up next is a quick design of the aft fuselage and then onto designing the tail feathers which hopefully will go smoothly.

Cheers,

John

You are right. That box needs to be removed and the new side peices need to be extruded. I also need to figure out how to break the side into 2 peices so I can angle in the aft portion on the sides. I am just using the 3D part to get an idea of how the parts are lineing up. I am still fighting with the new cad software. It is still easier for me to design it in 2D. I am also working on my wing design. I am planning on making a hollow foam wing. It will be sheeted like a built up wing with a d tube and cap strips. I will be sheeting it with 3/32 contest grade balsa. under the sheeting I am going to use .004 carbon fiber for reinforcement. The whole thing will be vacume baged. It should give me a very straight and light wing. Or mabey I am just wasting a lot of time and money. But I won't know unless I try. I will probably build 1 wing half and get a weight. I think the wing needs to be able to handel 20g,s. I will need to install a wing tube in the wing and support it at the root and tip. Then I will put about 200 lbs on the wing and see it it breaks or not. Better on the ground than in the air!

To split it in Autocad, all you need to do is use the "slice" command. This cmd only works on 3d solids so you would have to extrude your 2D fuse into a thicker 3D solid and then slice it where you want.

Cheers,

John

I finally started my mvvs 1.6 with pipe. That is a little animal. Starts like a dream, idles slow and the throttle response is lightning fast. Should be a great engine for my yak. I got my cowl and canopy. So now I need to make my mold. I figure about 2 more weeks and I will have all the drawings complete and ready for the laser cutter. Going with foam cheeks, wings and turtle deck will really speed up the process. Every thing will be sheeted with contest grade balsa. I need the air frame to come in around 5 lbs to make the all up weight around 10 lbs.

John

Looks great. I have been trying to do more 3d drawings. But my computer is seriously lacking. Once I started to get 5-6 components in place. Things started to slow down. It looks like I will be doing it in 2d, printing out the parts and making sure that they all line up.

Keep up the good work.

Brent

I wasn't happy with the wing so I remade it from scratch the past couple days. Took a lot less time the second time through. I have a tad more tweaking to do on the tail feathers and should be done the Autocad part of this project tomorrow. Then, I'll have to lay out the parts properly for the laser cutter and will be sending it off to them in a few days.

After all the ups and downs I've had with this project (especially Autocad itself) I doubt I'd do much different. I may even use autocad again since I've definitely got to the point where I've mastered it for airplane modelling.

Cheers,

John

Thanks for the interest and compliment flybug,

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I am not sure what I want to do with the plans when they are ready to be distributed. Tommee and BrentG will be tops on the list for a set since they've been with me on this project since near the beginning. Also, as mentioned before, I am worried about others trying to profit off my hard work on this by selling the plans elsewhere (some people have taken other's hard work and sold the plans on ebay!). I've concluded that the only way to cut all the wood will be via laser since there is too much fine detail with the interlocking stuff to do it by hand. Plus, for the US$60 or $70 in extra cost to have it cut by a pro would definitely be worth it. So given that it would be terribly difficult to hand cut by anyhow, I may try and work out a deal with a laser cutter to have a run of the Yak cut so that if we get enough people (at least 15) interested in getting it cut, we could get a pretty good deal on it. Ideally, we could even get a 3rd party like Fiberglass Specialties to do a run of fiberglass cowls and canopies (they could be plastic and vacuum formed).

Forgot to show the stringers on the screenshot above so here's a better pic:

Cheers,

John

The plane looks great. Thanks for keeping me in mind for plans or a kit. I think you are right about the amount of detail involved in cutting out your plane. I think that laser cutting is about the only option. You need to protect your self when it comes to people stealing your designs. I have several people wanting me to cut a yak for them as soon as I get my design up and flying.

I am thinking about building a vacuum form table with another scratch builder that I fly with. Building the canopys are the only thing that I am not able to do at this time. I have got my cowl sanded and preped to make my mold. I just need get my glass and carbon fiber and resin order put together. Maybe this week. Drawings are comming along but slowly. I am doing the cut sheets as I go. Putting in the laser cut breaks is tedious.

I hope your weather for new years day flying was good up in the great white north. We had around 25 pilots at our annual new years bbq and fly day. 64 degrees, sun and no wind.

Have a great new year

Brent

I agree on making use of the available technology (laser cutting) it is the only logical way to go to obtain a fine product such as this model you've designed. Please keep me informed on what route you want to go because I am really interested, I understand there are some unscrupulous people out there who have no regards to others intellectual property and we must all worry about them, it is a shame. Also on a side note, now that you've mastered AutoCAD for plane design, why don't you teach us by starting a thread step by step start to finish tutorial on it intended for a 6 year old to understand it just a thought.

Once again great job and keep it up, and what ever you decide let us know I am sure there are others interested as well!

John,

since your plane looks so great, really professionally designed I think you should make some profit from it. Yeah, I know RC is about sharing and stuff like that but if you give your plans away, especially in dxf or dwg format someone will SURELY use it to make profit. Don't let that happen, build your plane according to those plans and if everything looks fine, you can print your plans use some copyright on it, and you can cut kits and sell them. I plan to do that with mine cause it is the only way for me to pay for my hobby. Really, there are thousands of people willing to build machine like your plane and not just buy way overpriced arfs.

And thanks for having me in mind...i would really like to build that plane, it would be my first 3d machine...just continue great work...

I agree that there should be some reward for all the excellent work of the designers on this thread. Realize, however, that in this crazy world market of e-bay etc. a copyright may not be worth much. Imagine the job of getting lawyers involved in a suit. Two of the previous designs (KatanaX and the Spirit of Pitts) were given only to those who applied and were willing to provide some private information. This system is OK, but still has flaws. Conclusion: Almost impossible to control the sale and integrity of plans. But, if the designers are willing to sell short kits and parts with us, then I am only too happy to see them make some hobby money. No one is going to get rich here! Looper

Getting rich from my planes sounds like too much work! I just enjoy watching my planes fly. If I can make a little money to suport (as my wife calles it) my addiction, that would be fine.

Here are my latest drawings. I am building my parting board for my cowl. I will be pouring the first half of the mold on saturday. I should finish the mold early next week. I have also started drawing up the sheeting for the wings. All the cap strips will be interlocking with the leading and trailing edge sheeting. Carbon fiber will be sandwiched between the sheeting and the hollow foam core. I will post more drawings as I finnish them.

More parts ready for laser cutting. I need to draw up the stringers, gear mount and the top and bottom of the motor box. Then the fuse will be pretty much done, except for the parts that will be cut out of foam.

Hey Brent, are you drawing the cowl and the finals for SydDythers Yak? You may have mentioned the answer b4 but I may have not catched on to it.

By the way very neat job. How do you set up files for laser cutting in CAD?
