Resin, fiberglas, carbon fiber and contest grade balsa is on it's way. I should have it hear next week!!! Here is a pic of the landing gear block and bracing.

I have been playing with the scaling features of my cad software. I scaled the drawings 1.6 times and that give me a 103" yak. The cowl would be around 13.625 in diameter. Plenty of room for a da 100, 3w 106. If the plane looks like it needs a little more nose weight I could go with a zdz 120 or mvvs 116. That will probably be next winters project.

I am excited about possibly making a 32% yak. If I hit my target weight of 10-11 pounds on this plane a 103" plane should come in at 24-28lbs. That is taking into acount the scaling affect on weight. When you double the size of a plane the weight goes up by a factor of 4. So increasing the plane by 60% would result in a weight increase of 2.4 times. An 11 pound plane increased by 60% would be 26.4 pounds. I can live with that!!!

Man that is a lot of holes! I am interested in hearing what they quoty you.
Looks good, should be fun to build. I just got my fiber glass and resin. The carbon fiber cloth is back ordered. I hope it won't take too long. My balsa will be hear the end of this week.

I hope to start cutting foam soon.

Brent

HAHA! Indeed it is a lot of holes and I'll be interested too. I just sent it off to the cutter two minutes ago. Hopefully they won't take too long in getting back.

Cheers,

John

Brent & John, thanks! I appreciate the work you are doing. I would love to build the 50cc Yak. Please count me in for a wood kit if you go that route. And I would also be interested in the 32% version if you design it.

PLEASE let us buy kits!

Chuck

Chuck

Thanks guys for all the interest!

I am planning on scaling mine to 103" aprox 32%. I have already scaled my drawings 1.6 times and it looks about right. If my plane comes in at 10-11 pounds a 32% should come in between 24-26 pounds. That will probably be my project for next winter. If my plane flies like I want it to I may end up cutting one sooner. Keep in touch.

Thanks Chuck,

There is a really good chance I will make this a short kit to those that are interested if the Beta version of my 50CC design works out. If all goes well, scaling it would not be a problem. Indeed a 40%/35% (approx. 126"/111") design would be easily achieved. I'd love to get a couple brave guys to beta test those sizes since that size is not in the budget for me at the moment

I was informed by my laser cutter that I chose the two most expensive widths of ply for my project (1/16" & 3/32"). Since this is a one off for now, I told him to go ahead with it as designed. If I get a bunch made up, I can save about 30% off the materials cost by going to 1/8" ply but that, of course, will add some weight.

Hey Brent, are we now in competition?!!!! LOL!

Cheers,

John

Friendly competition I hope! What was the price that they quoted you? PM me if you want. Were you able to find 3/32 light ply? I have been looking for the 2.5 mm ply that they are using in the ultra light arfs. It is hard to find. I am not sure that there will be much of a weight penalty for using 1/8" lite ply. Planes that use the thinner ply also end up doing a lot of doubling. with the 1/8" there is no need.

The plane looks great! I think we both might have a couple of winners on our hands. Perhaps we will have something that people want. For those who don't want to settle for an arf.

When do you think you will start building?

Brent

Hey Brent,

Of course it's friendly Maybe we can actually collaborate on our next project? No point in inventing the wheel twice. My vote is for a 30% Pitts M12. Someone has already created one for small gassers/large glow engines.

It will be a day or two before I hear back on price. I am going with finnish birch and will not be using any light ply. As far as I know, the thinnest lite ply is 1/8". So I designed most of the fuse (75%) in 1/16" Finnish birch and doubled up where necessary. Should be as strong if not stronger than a lite ply frame and around the same weight. It's nice to see people are still interested in kits given the proliferation of ARFs. Building is actually what originally attracted me to the hobby believe it or not. I built for two years before actually flying anything I produced.

On my EF Yak 87", they used a lot of doubling of lite 1/8" ply believe it or not. I plan to have this on my building board as soon as I get the kit from the cutter which will hopefully be within a couple of weeks. Build time for the airframe should only be two weeks but I am still pondering the construction of the canopy/hatch and cowl.

Cheers,

John

Is that the same as Baltic Birch?

I also enjoy the building as much as the flying. The best thing is flying one of my own designes. I don't know if I will ever build another kit. Unless it is something small for one of my boys. I got started about 25 years ago with my father and younger brother. We spent all winter building a falcon 56. Helping my dad build the plane got me hooked. Cars and girls took up a huge chunck of my building time for many years. It happens.

collaborateing on a plane sounds fun The cowl and canopy are a bit of a challange. If you already have a cowl you can make a mold. The canopy can also be molded or you can make a vacume table and vacuform one. Another option is get a 29% edge 540t canopy and build your hatch from there. You already have your turtle deck shape set though. An edge canopy might be close. For a 32% plane I was planning on making my own plug for a cowl. I would turn blue or pink high density foam on a lathe to get the basic shape. I would then make the louvers out of pine. Then spend the next 2 weeks glassing, fillling and priming the thing until it was perfect. Making a plug is a time consuming process.

I am looking forward to seeing the thing on the building board.

Have a good one!

Brent

I would hazard a guess that it is one and the same but I couldn't be sure Brent.

In the "too much time on my hands" department, I've been experimenting with Solidworks as a platform for my next design. I managed to create a Hitec 5955 servo with my efforts. The servo arm actually spins around on the servo body. When the time comes, I can install the servo in the design, attach the linkage between the control surface and the servo and actually operate the control surface by spinning the servo arm. The advantage is to check for any binding or interference and, of course, it's really cool

Cheers,

John

this is mine HITEC servo, yeah too much time...btw there is much better software for making animations and other stuff, I use NASTRAN, you can directly load model from solidworks and even save animation as video file. Oh, now I remember newer versions of solid have possibility to create animatons...

Forgot to told you, what a fantastic plane have you designed...

Solidworks 2006. Yes Tommee it does have animations available in it but I am more interested in just the collision detection in the Assembly.

I sent u a PM on the price Brent.

Cheers,

John

Hey Tommee,

Forgot to ask if you have ever mocked up the DA50 in solidworks? Would love to find someone who has to save me some time!

Cheers,

John

I'm using Solidworks versions 2003, 2005, 2006, but most of my work is done in 2003. Since I am going to university of mechanical engineering and naval architecture (specializing in mechatronic and robotics) I have all of software available, for free of course, but I know that license for Solidworks costs a small fortune.

John, there is only one hobby store in my country, and I haven't had any nitro engine bigger than 20cc in my hands, so I can only dream about DA 50. BUT if you have measurements of that engine I would draw it for you, it would come in handy for my future virtual projects. Have searched DA website but data available is not enough for me to make 3d replica.

Here is a pic of the first cowl layup from the new mold. I tried a new type of glass from Aircraft Spruce. It is a 8.8 oz. glass with a very high thread count. It is the best glass that I have ever used for laying up around tight corners and radiuses. The resin is aeropoxy. I ended up with a slow cure catylist. I think it will work real good for my carbon fiber lay ups. It has a 2 hour pot life. It is just too slow for making the fiberglass parts. I may continue to use it though. I am hopeing that it cures real hard so the cowl will not sag on hot days. I should have it joined and be able to pull it out by monday.

The cowl came out pretty good. I have some air bubble issues in the louvers. That can be cured by changing my wet out procedure.

Here is the clamped and weighted. Not the best way to do it. We don't have the vacume bag equipment set up in the new shop yet. Should be ready when I do the wings though. The next pic is the rudder sheeted and out of the shucks.

Keep up the good work Brent

I am loving this Solidworks! As a way to teach myself the program, I created a DA50 I can use in my future airframe designs. The throttle arm is functional to check for geometry and such in the installation.

Cheers,

John
