Flybug,

Don't even bother with Autocad. You wouldn't first learn how to ride a horse before learning to drive a car would you? Same idea with Acad and Solidworks. I wish I hadn't wasted my time with Acad

I have figured out how to bring my Acad Yak design into Sworks and am in the process of doing just that to see how it looks. It will allow me to loft between surfaces so I can see it skinned.

Cheers,

John

Hey FlyBug,

Hopefully this won't irritate any of the straight laced types on this forum but I have a PDF copy of a Solidworks book I can email you. It is two parts and each one is about 15 megs. Also, Solidworks has a a bunch of step by step tutorials built in to help you get up and running and familiar with the concepts.

Cheers,

John

Elevator halfs are sheeted. The one on the left has been sanded and is ready for leading and trailing edges. The one on the right just came out of the shucks and is ready for triming and sanding.

I have cut the turtle deck and I am prebending the 3/32 contest sheeting.

No not yet. I may do it similar to my edge that is in my profile. That was a pain in the **** to do. But it looks cool and is very easy to see.

Turtle deck is on! I only have to massage the fillets to blend in the vertical stab. Vert. stab and rudder are on. I love working with sheeted foam. It builds so straight and fast!!!!!

Here are some pics.

Hey Tommee,

Couple quick questions,

Ok, I've pretty much got Solidworks under control for things that I can measure in the real world and then create parts for them (i.e. the DA50 shown above). What I am having trouble with is actually developing an airplane's fuse from 3 views. In Autocad, I imported the three views and worked of those to create the basic shape of the airplane. I have tried to do the same thing in SW but after I've imported the BMP, it stays fixed on the screen. So rotating around does not have any effect on the picture. How have you accomplished it? Should I just trace the three views completely then copy and paste all three onto their respective planes (Right, Top, Front)? Hmm, maybe I just answered my own question

Cheers,

John

...hm, I was doing exactly that yesterday, scanned rib that I have traced on paper, imported that scanned picture as tiff image. But when importing image you can click on insert, then insert picture, and that is wrong, you cant do nothing with that. Although I am sure you figured, first you have to open a sketch then select a plane, then click on tools, sketch tools, insert picture. There, picture can be rotated, resized. Now you just need to define overall dimension, for example draw two lines define dimension between them ant position and resize picture to exactly match between two lines. at least I did that when doing my rib. When finished, delete picture...

Thanks Tommee, I'll play around some more today with SW and give that a go. The "Solidworks Essentials" is on its way to you.

Flybug, my laser cutter was really busy this week and he is going to try and get back to me today on a quote. I've just been doing this solidworks stuff while I wait

Cheers,

John

That is looking too awesome!

Never heard back. Hopefully tomorrow.

On another note, I decided to go with the Pitts M14 as the next project. Pretty much same as M12 but the top wing is not swept back.

Cheers,

John

Fuse is all but done. I only need to mount the horiz. stab. and it is ready to cover. I made the tuned pipe mount this morning. I think it should work pretty good. The gear is off an old ultimate that is no longer with us. Rest in peices.

I'm jealous Really coming along though!

My cutter got back to me. I'll PM you what he quoted me Brent. For everyone else interested in a kit, it will definitely be a very viable alternative, costwise, to buying an arf. I can reduce the material costs right off the bat by about 30% by changing to a slightly thicker size of ply for the fuse. Added weight wouldn't be much more than a few ounces. Also, I think I could get another 15 to 20% off of the cutting cost by getting a bit less fancy with the lightening holes.

Cheers!

John

Cutter got back to me again, he's going to get around to cutting it today. Hurrah! Should get it to my place on Tuesday. He gave me a nice complement saying the plan looked "spectacular"

John

Not sure on a kit price. It would depend on how much a bunch of fiberglass cowls and vaccum formed canopies would cost to get made.

FlyBug, I just got a new 8MP digital SLR camera yesterday so I'll be looking for any excuse to use it

Cheers,

John
