I would like to know the most important differences between the rules of QM-40 and those of F3D (FAI).

In my opinion, the "most important" difference is that F3D models use a full tuned pipe and zero nitromethane. The QM-40 magic muffler (folded pipe) and 15% nitro make for a powerplant that is more compact and easier to set up and run, with only a little bit less power. Put that on a slightly smaller airframe (4 lbs., 400 square inches for QM-40 compared to almost 5 lbs. and about 450 square inches for F3D) and you get very similar speeds but a lot less time, money, and maintenance issues.

There are other differences, but to your average spectator or sport pilot they are negligible. Both types of airplanes are sleek, beautiful, and "scary fast".

Status: offline 		There are basic airframe differences with regard to size and minimum weight. The major difference is the engine rule. Q40 engines have to be commercially available with the appropriate muffler and run on 15% max nitro. F3D engines have very simple rules, 6.5cc, FAI fuel, with a basic muffler requirement that allows the use of full tuned pipes. One can build ones own engine. F3D is the pinnacle of all Pylon Racing. There is nothing to compare with the exhilaration when it all comes together and works the way it should, or the depths of depression when it does not.

Status: offline 		Duane, How has the racing been in the Denver area? I know you have the airpark elite field but there does not seem to be much promotion of the events. Have the turnouts been good? I flew a lot of pylon back in the early 90's . Also is the electric light system working? The last race I attended was at the Longmont field and was very disapointed to find that we could have no flagging or (lighting) and it made it tough to fly a good course. I still love pylon even though I have not been as active as I would like.

Yes, we're still here, good to hear from you. We had 10-12 guys showing up at contests so we put up posters and leaflets in all the hobby shops and now we have 10-12 guys showing up at contests. Next season we'll be moving around a little more, with at least 2 contests already scheduled for local club fields. Perhaps that will spark a bit more visibility & more participation from new people. The ARF Sky Raider class with Thunder Tiger 40s is generating quite a bit of interest from folks who showed no interest in racing otherwise.

The light system still works but we're hoping to replace the cables with a wireless system using R/C car radios. That will make our little road show even more portable.

Status: offline 		That is good to hear. So, I do still have 2 Q-500 planes and an TT .40. Is that still the sportsman combo (engine) to have?
How is the interest in the faster events? I still would like to move into the Nelson Class. I have also been playing around with an F5D electric. I always had an interest in electric pylon racing and now we have some great designs available to us.
